I have to agree with Am and Marcel, I think the Expo has been quite poorly advertised I was given the impression that there was a dedicated promotions team. There have been a fair few Expo group notices announcing various events, but if nobody knows about the Expo in the first place they aren't going to see those notices. I mainly did it for exposure too, wanted to get my stuff seen by a wider audience than would normally see it! The only sales I've made so far have been by Czari and a very good friend who loves to put my stuff in her rental properties. It would be nice to cover costs, but I can't see that happening unless there are more visitors. I have posted in the classified forums under Shopping and Special Attractions. I suppose it's been a learning experience if nothing else though, and maybe a little will be made for charity. Plus there's still a few days to go yet.

Hopefully more people are waiting for the weekend to get there. I think I will try to go tonight. Weekend lag would probably be terrible.

its funny that you mention the diff between the bay city flea market info on the log in page and exposure for this expo....when i saw the bay city info there, i thought...hmmmm..LL supported area so they get the press. I find this to be true over and over. There are many worthwhile things that go on all over SL and some are quite large, but if they are not actually affiliated with SL in some way...they get zip.
I will be interested to learn how you guys do in terms of sales at the expo and/or sales following at your main stores. I have done a TON of expos in RL and my experience is the return is very low....low ROI. The name recognition and exposure however is really what increases. but whether that translates into sales remains to be seen. Any expo type things I have been involved with in SL are the same in terms of concrete results.
my advice is keep your expectations very low so yu arent disappointed.

From: Marcel Flatley Since Brenda is not in this thread, it must be your fault indeed You're right, but Brenda may still kick your ass. I just checked it out. I didn't experience lag, but it took forever for things to rez. Total number of people on all four sims was 9.

I went to the Home and Garden Expo last year and really wanted to participate this year. I started looking in January for notices in events and on the forums. Finding nothing, I finally looked for it through Google search and found an announcement that had been made in the X-Street forums. Through that I was able to contact the organizers, but it was the night before set-up began before I was able to arrange to join the group and rent a display space for the event. Since I was added to the group, communication has been great, and I'm very glad to be an exhibitor (I actually have made sales) but I agree--it would have been great if LL could have promoted this charity event the way some others have been promoted.

Lag
05-07-2009 13:23
From: Bradley Bracken I didn't experience lag, but it took forever for things to rez. Total number of people on all four sims was 9. No lag? I had terrible lag there. But, I have had terrible lag for the last three weeks or so. It is severely hampering my ability to shop in SL. BT

From: Ashe1 Writer I believe I saw the promotion/link on the login page this morning when I signed on Yay! I agree, I've been a little frustrated that it hasn't felt like there was better promotion, and what there is seems largely about promoting music events. Still, I've made some sales, people have taken a few landmarks, and, maybe most importantly I've picked up a few new group members. I use Hippo Groups, so I can see the location of the terminal they joined from. BTW, sales from the charity vendors do show up in your transaction history, at least they do in mine. You will see the payment and then a debit where the money is immediately taken back out. I put a really low priced items in my vendors because I wanted there to be an option to give for people who didn't want to spend much. I had hoped that I could sell a larger quantity of low priced items. So far, with so little traffic, it hasn't really panned out that way.

Well, the way I looked at it was 1) advertising cost and 2) it's for charity- at least some part there of - so ...
And as for sales - I've had three. No idea about the vendors though- I don't think I would know if any of those sold or not. Had one person come from the show to my store because they wanted to see the Rain Forest in person. Other than that- no idea if other visitors are because the expo or because regular visits.

And, since they are raising money for charity, where is their advertising budget supposed to come from? There seem to be organizers there, or making announcements to the group all the time, and they have several listings in the event tab, so it's not like I feel there isn't a lot of effort being put into it. It's hard to promote anything in SL and really get the word out. Even the big things like the Hair Fair, and Clothing Fair I generally only hear about because someone mentions it on the forum. Overall I feel like it has been a good thing to be a part of, and I would do it again.

i made some sales today, amazingly. and i am pleased as punch that someone purchased my charity vendor item. YAY! i feel good that someone liked my ideas enough to spend $$ on it, and i feel even better that it's going to a worthy charity. i also made a private sale, so that was a nice feeling too. i am not, in any way, dissing the people responsible for putting this event together. i mean, it's obviously a HUGE project, and the IM's must be horrendous. they layout is great, the atmosphere is lovely, and the access and flow is easy. all put together, it's a lovely lovely neighborhood. but i do wish that it had been promoted better - of course so i could make $$, but also for the charity. if i hear about it soon enough, i'll participate again. perhaps even volunteer to help market it better.

From: Czari Zenovka Spent some time in Icanus' Fatima exhibit. My love of Victorian/antique furnishings kept me there for quite awhile.
mmmm nice of you to say so Czari ... although Fatima (who spent 3 weeks getting her Antiques Artistry exhibit ready) might think I'd stolen the limelight unfairly lol We've both sold some bits and pieces directly from the Expo, but we've also both noticed new buyers for our 'stuff' Inc

There is still time to go to this, and the times I've been there there has been no lag, and nothing like the lag I've encountered at some of the hair and fashion expos. Probably because - just like at good store sales of hair and fashion - everyone feels like they have to dress to the nines to go to those! Be sure and see my stuff while you're there! I'm in the Rhodium sim, right next door to Poppet and down the street from Barnsworth. It was fun to be able to set up the lot the way you want to, and makes for a lot of interesting lots to see. It's very nicely arranged, with walkways between each lot. I've also donated a Gift Certificate for any house or other item of your choice from Coco's Cottage for the raffle. There's an auction, too, and lots of good music performances! coco

I spent some time there last night. I picked up a few small items. I am thinking about a couple of bigger purchases. (maybe another house although how many houses can you have, but I saw one I love). No way I could take it all in on one visit. I am hoping SL settles down enough for me to spend more time there over the weekend.
I dressed low arc, but the lag was really good. Texture loading took awhile, but I didn't have lag problems.

I have loved the concept of the show- that it wil benefit chairty at some lever is a plus of course- but just the fact that the expo is happening is cool- Decor doesn't get enough exposure- there aren't as many groups to announce in. Probably there is just not that big a market s- that has it's pros and cons- less customer base but less competition.

Hard to say, 3 - haven't sold much there, but have sold a fair bit more at my main store. Fatima's had much the same result. Inc

i think what i'm actually trying to highlight is the fact that the music events were obviously much more advertised than the shopping portion of the expo. i made my point, and don't really need any more maps to make my point. even if someone wanted to window shop at the expo and grab landmarks and whatnot, or donate to a vendors, or buy from the special event vendors, one of the sims is completely full and no one can get in... and it's a lag fest from the music event (even if you COULD get in) *sigh*

From: Incanus Merlin Hard to say, 3 - haven't sold much there, but have sold a fair bit more at my main store. Fatima's had much the same result. Inc Much the same here. Since mid-week I've seen a few sales a day from the expo and/or the charity vendors, and moved a few landmarks from that location, but sales at the main store have also been up a tick. Definitely worth it for me to get any exposure to people who don't usually search low prim furniture, so they would never even see my things using search (I don't rank well at all for "furniture" . The inclusion of so much music is an interesting choice. It may be serving them well as part of the fundraiser, if they are collecting donations during the events. It doesn't really do much for sales at exhibits, but if it nets them more in total income than sales from the charity vendors would, then it is a good choice for them. Also, I noticed 2 entries about it in the Fashion Feed of SL today, which I consider to be a fair bit of exposure. http://www.fashionfeedofsl.com/?paged=2
