Lights are going dark for a round-the-world rolling blackout at 8 p.m. local time Saturday. Earth Hour National Dark-Sky Week got its start five years ago - and this year, the week's organizers are teaming up with Earth Hour (as well as the folks behind Lights Out America) to support Saturday's hourlong celebration of the dark side. About 200 cities around the world will be dousing the lights from 8 to 9 p.m. local time as a symbolic gesture for action on the climate change issue. Voluntarily of course.

I had not heard about this. I'm game, but I'm not sure if my city is participating.
Wait - does that mean I have to turn my computer off too? I guess so. That's about 200 watts. Well, I suppose I could always read . . .
Oh. Can't do that. No lights.
I've got it! I'll make sure my iPod is charged up and go for a walk and listen to podcasts. I'll save the planet AND get exercise.

Yes. We're planning on it at my house in San Diego. From: someone This Saturday, a global "lights out" event called Earth Hour is being held to call for immediate action on climate change. Nearly 200 cities and millions of people worldwide are expected to participate by turning off home and building lights from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm local time. Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Phoenix are hosting city-wide events, and landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Niagara Falls, the Sears Tower and Wrigley Field will turn off nonessential lights for the hour. Our friends at the World Wildlife Fund, who are organizing this event, expect it to be "among the largest global calls for climate change action ever."

This is certainly something all of us can do. I have a small hand crank radio that I can listen to music on. I don't know if my hometown is doing anything specific, but I'm sure the local tv news have talked about it. I'm going to hope that many houses and apartments will be darker than usual tonight.

I am sat here in darkness half an hour into the earth hour. We sit like this most nights so it doesn't feel too different. I think its a good idea, but needs to be done more often.. or at least try other ways.
I wonder though, if many people, that are using candles to get through this, are using pure beeswax candles.. dont they say that a lot of the manufactured ones let off a lot of C02??
It amazes me sometimes how many people leave all their lights on in the house.. especially when they are not in those rooms.

Maybe we should petition LL to shut down SL too for a while. I'm certain that you can take this with a pinch of salt, but the following article claims that an avatar consumes almost as much electricity as an average Brazilian. http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2006/12/avatars_consume.php

Increased productivity and industrialization will help.

or maybe we all shouldnt eat meat for 1 day a week, global savings would be immense *dont get me wrong i am a meat eater and pro evironment, it's just a fact* From: someone Eating Red Meat Like Driving an SUV?
Can changing your diet really have much of an impact?
"It is comparable to the difference between driving an SUV and driving a reasonable sedan," said Eshel, who drives a Honda Civic, and only when he has to. .

Well your average American or Brit as well for that matter. I don't know many in RL who have the same buying power as their avatar. Maybe increased productivity will help us in that too.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be sure to turn on a few extra lights for those turning theirs off.

And it was more than an hour so we definitely do not need a repeat. From: Dekka Raymaker I'll make sure I'll change my settings to midnight all day long The suggestion is to turn off the lights for only one hour. I already use midnight setting for dancing, which is probably what I'll be doing at 8:00 my time - so I'm covered.
