Hi,

I'm from the University of California Irvine
Why do we care that you are from UCI? Looking for other Anteaters?

However, I'm going to pass your thoughtful post on to the lead researcher on the project.

Professor Bonnie, by any chance? Tell her Lee says "hi".

I tell people that it's the University of California because I think it's one of the great research institutions in America, but I'm biased.

No, it's not Bonnie. I work with Dr. Dan Stokols in the department of planning, policy, and design in the school of social ecology.

Best,
Mark

It always helps to learn a little bit about the world you are in before posting a survey. :)

hmmm.. I may be a party pooper.. but what proof can you give that you are really from the University and this is a legit survey and not just a way to get people's SL info? Oryx brought up a very good point.

What does identifying information add to your research? I can understand SL names to a point, but what does my real name or address have to do with anything? If you are wondering about geographics, you can just simply ask for the state. I could easily go onto the the University's website and grab the name of a professor and say I'm taking their class.

Sorry for being so pessimistic, but there are many scams that go around and it does sound strange that a University would give out prizes for filling out a survey. I went to your billboard, it didn't strike me as professional in anyway to make me feel this is a research project other then your notecard. I also tried to get onto the website and I would think if it was for the University, it would be University URL.

Any good reassurance you can give on this? I guess I can call the University and ask to speak to this professor regarding the research. That's a good way to do it...

My apologies for being so negative, but hang in SL for a while or read the forums a bit...

Hi Gez,

I understand your concerns. I would point out that my notecard includes my email address at the university "mcombs@uci.edu" along with my phone number. Once you've gone to the survey you see my name again along with Shalini Misra and Daniel Stokols PhD. Finally, here is the link to our department and our advisor:

http://socialecology.uci.edu/faculty/stokols/

I invite you to call anyone of us if you have concerns. The main reason we are collecting address information is so we send the winners their iPod shuffles. We are collecting a large amount of data, due to the sample size we can't pay everyone that takes the survey so we decided to give people a chance to win an iPod.

I appreciate your concerns and would point out that if you don't feel the survey is worthy of your time or makes you uncomfortable you should not take it.

Also, I will point out that our URL (http://tinyurl.com/2prbwx) is just a utility that we use to make the URL smaller. If you type that URL into your browser you will be taken to a University website:

https://webfiles.uci.edu/shalinim/www/index.htm

I've pointed out your concerns to the lead researcher and appreciate your note.

Thank you,
Mark
