Hi,

I'm from the University of California Irvine and I'm trying to upload graphics and a notecard to two billboards that I purchased. No one can seem to help. I've worked with both the Mall Owner and tech support from SL. My billboard is surrounded by other billboards that work just fine.

So far I've....

created a note card and the texture file which looks fine in my inventory, I've set permissions which allows anyone to copy modify or resell/give away.

I'm at a loss!

My billboards are at (17, 94, 100) and (116, 75, 50)

Thanks,
Mark

what exactly are you trying to ask? Whats the problem?

Ah not working then? JUst make your own. make a box textured how you want it and stick a notecard vendor script in it. availablein the script library I think. I'd post it but I cant be sure I'd be right in the scripting lol

Thank thats right anyway...

Are the billboards modifyable? Is so then you should be able to add your textures. If not, you're stuck. In which case your best option would be to make your own billboard panel and pop the notecard giver script in it.

1) the textures need to be full-perms if I am not mistaken.
2) when you move the notecard and texture onto the billboard, remember to
a) control-click-drag the inventory, and
b) make sure you've followed the directions the billboards gave you, so they are ready to receive the inventory.

This should probably get you sorted out.

The coordinates of your billboards are of little use without the name of the sim they are in.

Thanks Gomez - I really appreciate it....I'm really behind in the data collection stage of my research. This is the reason for the billboards. We're giving away 4 iPod shuffles to Second Life participants and just need to collect about 100 surveys so people have a 25-1 chance of winning.

I had no idea how immersive this world is. The first phase of this study involved WOW but this is much different and VERY cool. I have to be careful as this could impact my studies.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Mark

Oh, it a research project. So I won't flame you for doing an ad farm. So what is the Sim your billboards are located. Research projects are fun.

What is a SIM?

Sim, simulator, region. The name of the 256m x 256m chunk of land in which your billboards exist.

I got my first billboard to work and was even able to change it. The billboard at Rybinsk 17, 93, 100 is still not working - I think there is a bug

Sometimes scripts in objects get corrupted (I don't know how, I'm not a techie person) and you have to reset the script or put a new one into the object. Ask the billboard owner if he'll check this.

Fixed it myself - I'm getting the hang of this. Any suggestions on good places to talk about my research and get participants?

You could advertise in the various blogs about Second Life, or the newletters, (The Avastar, SLBB [SLLB? can't remember], etc) and various fashion mags (Aspire, SecondStyle, etc) in addition to your billboards.

Yes.

By the way, I took your survey. It seemed fine, however I would definitely delete one question. I don't mind that you know my name, address, whatever; that can be found in any phone book. I do, however HIGHLY HIGHLY resent your asking BOTH my Real Life name AND my avatar's name. Not only is it rude and intrusive and SO none of your business, but some would consider it an identity risk, as, heck, you could call LL and say "hey I'm so and so and here's my avatar's name and here's my name, age, address, etc, but darn it, I forgot my password!!"

Um, NOT. I didn't answer that question.

This is terrific feedback. We're interested in the type of names that people use for their avatar as a measure that can be quantified and modeled. I can assure you that your information is HIGHLY protected. We have to treat your data with extreme caution, our collection methods and security of our data is reviewed and approved by a University review board.

However, I'm going to pass your thoughtful post on to the lead researcher on the project.

We really appreciate your support and feedback.

Thank you,
Mark

How does the fact that my avatar's name is Oryx Tempel change your data in any way? My name could be Dickweed Tempel and my answers to your questions would be the same. I'm sorry but the avatar name question should be removed.

The name indicates something about the person. For instance "Warbringer Watson" is very different than "Lovely Larson"

What about the people who signed up

a) not knowing the definition of their last name (e.g. "Recreant";) and later found out the definition and seriously regretted the name choice, but don't feel like dealing with getting a whole new avatar, or

b) on a whim just to check out SL and chose a goofy name like "Cheeseburger" and later decided to be very serious in SL, or

c) just used their AOL user ID out of sheer laziness?

All that's true - this is a very, very, tiny part of the model.

Regarding the security of the data, I thought you should see the following procedures that we follow:

"Whereas personally identifying information will be collected, all data will be stored in a
locked office with every effort made to maintain confidentiality of the data. Further, all efforts will be taken to minimize a breach of confidentiality by maintaining research data in a secure database. All identifiable information that will be collected about you will be
removed and replaced with a code. A list linking the code and your identifiable information will be kept separate from the research data. All of the information gathered from this study will be kept confidential."

You can see that we go to great lengths to ensure that data security is never breached.

Thanks again,
Mark
