===== Edit ========== I misinterpreted the following quote when I made this post. I made a mistake. This thread doesn't make sense. I am adding this note to forestall the need for anyone else to point out my error. The quote doesn't suggest anything about adding more than 25 groups to anyone's account. I read it wrong. I'd delete the thread if I could but I can't. ============================= From: Blog post about party for Concierge level users To make the logistics of this easier, we’ll be adding all concierge residents (who have less than 25 groups already) to a new Special Event group over the next week. I seem to recall it having been stated that there are technical reasons for the 25 group limit. ===== Edit ========== I misinterpreted the above quote when I made this post. I made a mistake. That's my recollection too.
But unless I'm missing something (fairly likely), that blog quote is entirely consistent with the stated limit. They are saying they'll only add people who aren't already maxed out with 25 groups.. right?

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I seem to recall it having been stated that there are technical reasons for the 25 group limit. Meaning it affects performance, not meaning it's impossible. All of our SL limits: prims, number of avatars in a sim, etc. are for technical reasons. There's nothing magical about the numbers. But I also agree with Anti, I don't think they're busting the limit here.

A recent thread ( /327/99/244189/1.html has a post by the always helpful Beezle, citing https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-208 which contains much crunchy technical goodness (including a post by the OP ).

That thread does not seem to offer any useful information pertinent to starting a class war.

How many groups can you be in, oh, a vBulletin forum that allows the users to form groups? How many groups can one be in in facebook?
This is part of why I want more web integration into SL. So we can have our avatars join groups and chatrooms and messaging services and webmail providers and such and access them from within the SL client - with practically none of the bandwidth passing through Linden Lab's servers.

From: someone But I also agree with Anti, I don't think they're busting the limit here. I expect the limit is a design limitation given how hard it appeared to change from 15 to 25 groups. I suspect the avatar to group table looks like: <AV UUID: group 1 ID: group 2 ID: group 3 ID: ...> instead of the more "normal" form of <AV UUID: group ID> <AV UUID: another group ID> <AV UUID: yet another group ID> To anyone mildly experienced in relational databases, the first form is a gut wrenching mess to extend, especially when it may be actually be a record of the form: <AV UUID: group1 ID: ... group25 ID: home location: attached to head object ID: Partner UUID ...> "Fifteen groups should be more than enough for anybody!" - Philip Linden 2002 (ok, I made that quote up but he *could* have said it.

the short reason is that the sim handles group connections for all groups for all avs on the sim, which might be why group chat errors started cropping up after the limit went up from 15 to 25

The main issue I've seen referred to is with regards to access and ban permissions. For building, it only checks your active group. For access and ban it has to check all of your groups.
More intergration with web services does seem to be a solution. Groups that can only be used for communication instead of land access etc.
