I see them at all the corner shops I go to - they are, of course, just another way of ripping off the poor and those with bad credit, as you shell out £X + Y% cash to get £X worth of Visa.

I have just finished printing the letter to the bank, but I have never seen prepaid visa cards in the uk before?? Havent a clue where to appy for one, most /prepaid /debit stuff/ credit cards are not normally available in the uk.
...
Mike

look at Ordinal's post directly above this one - that's what I'm talking about - She's right - there's a surcharge for buying the card, and it really isn't a credit card because it's a preloaded gift card, so there is no credit involved.

You'll pay extra to get the card, in the US it's around 6%, but I have no idea what it is in the UK. It's worth looking at, though, because it seems that it would work in your case.

I believe one can buy them by post as well.

However: the thing is, your card is advertised as "Visa Electron". That implies "Visa". There is no reason that they should be declining Visa transactions like that. Therefore, I would give them hell over the phone on the matter.

Well ,the Banks had to do something. They finally woke up and realized giving actual credit cards to people with bad credit was counterproductive.

Remember your bank needs you (your money) more then you need that bank tell them they have 24 hours to fix it and in that time look for another bank.

Talk to the bank mgr the cashiers are pretty useless also I think CitiBankd and Capitoal One are both full online banks in the UK.

Prepaid Visa cards aren't credit though. Quite the opposite; you have already paid, and they do expire I believe. The purchaser is paying a relatively huge sum for the transaction method.

It makes me sad that the OP feels they need to leave SL because they can no longer buy items. SL does not to be materialistic in order to be enjoyed. There are so many things out there for feee.

Also i you truely cannot find a way to get money into the game (although with suggestions of pre paid visa cards which are avaliable in the UK and visa debit cards, neither of which are credit i dont see how you cant) and you feel that you HAVE to have money to have an enjoyable SL you can get a job in world. I work in SL and make all the linden i use this way (well now i have a little store too, but all my money is made in world). his should give you enough to buy things. You shouldnt need to leave SL simply becuase you cant buy linden the way you are at the moment

I believe he's talking about his premium account. But, you are right, he could downgrade to basic. Only problem is he loses his land (and business) I believe.

well true.... but i would assume if one has a business in SL they are making linden... these can be exhchanged into US dollars to pay or preium accounts and tier (depending how much you make i guess) and if it is not a business then getting a job in world would still help.

What I find odd about all this is that SL is billed from a bank in the UK! My bank in the U.S. actually declined billing for a while because they needed further verification to make an online/overseas payment. I hope you get this sorted out.

I agree with those that say to buy a pre-paid card for now, and honestly if your bank won't allow you to do with YOUR money what you want to do then find another bank!

I think the problem is that Linden Lab will close your account and not allow you to log in if you owe tier. If you go over 7 days unpaid, your account is locked to log ins. If you go over 30 days unpaid, they delete your account. Tiering down to basic won't help in that situation.

FYI - while SL is still accepting these cards, I was recently informed they are trying to phase them out.

They work fine via PayPal - so even if SL does not accept them directly, you will be able to use them via paypal.

Hi everybody inc Jacki
05-12-2008 23:56
HI, I have to be quick as my line is due to be terminated today as My internet and phone is being transfered to another flat in the same buiding i am moving into....Im moving 50yards to the next flat, but BT still going to charge me £120 to have a line put in that flat.....same tel number, same building, no discount or anything..:(

Once Im back online. hopefully by thursday, i will look up the wep pages yuo have kindly given me....although it may have visa on an electron card, its transactions are not done by visa!! some stores notably B&Ms bargain store wont take the card at all, they say that this company charges double the interest rate to do the transaction, and with there mark ups so low, they would not make a penny on a a transaction of say £12...

Good morning Jacki Rickenbacker, Im glad you managed to get here lol

Im hoping I Will be able to resolve this matter, and be able to use paypal again, I will IM you
as soon as my new telephone line is installed, by the way perhaps my american friends might throw up when i tell you our petrol and diesal is still going up, now nearly £5.45 a gallon in your money, getting on for over 10$ a gallon now :(00 So we are all under huge pressures in uk with energy costs, plus gas. thats gas, as in for cooking!! lol Is going up another 10-15% which means most households who use gas/central heating will face bills of £1,300 a year or so....eekk I want to move out of uk......!!!!

must go many thanks for all your replys, be back online soon and perhaps my bank will offer something of an answer in the next few days...:)

bye for now

Well this is silly to even talk about it this long.

If you are using anything for payment that says VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, or PayPal, generally you can contest and win ANY unauthorized online charge. No fees, no charges thats it. Merchants generally loose contested online charges.

If you gave a merchant your bank account number and authorized direct deductions (its called ACH), you are very foolish. You cannot easily contest these, and they can continue until you close the account. If you did this, you should close the bank account and open another. Never do that again except with very trusted merchant.

Ecletic I should point out that i cant work due to health problems, i havebt been able to work for 12 years now, but I/we meaning my partner took out a pension a bit early, so we had some funds available, because I love SL and its possiblities to make a little money, I put quite a bit of money into buying a open sim with another uk resident.....i also have an air terminal and houses for rent on Jacki Rickenbackers land....but to build a bussiness /landscape an island make coral reefs and buy dinosaurs for the theme park for holiday makers to enjoy with there paid holiday they get from my air terminal( they get a motel room as well) its not just a tp to a sandy beach!!! This takes time, and more lindens to finish even beforei have advertized my group. an adult cinema I got loads of folk wanting to go into, cost me a lot to build, but still have to fund a website to stream mp4s to...so with RL issues of moving, and the usual other bills, the bussiness is taking longer to to get going thus im not getting any income from it, in some respects of SL im still somewhat of a newbie too bussiness dealings, but im still hopefull i can save it...

Not sure about the premuim account, i dont even no if i need it, but LL did say that it needs paying otherwise i wouldnt be able to log in, but i thought u didnt need a prem account to log in...so still in limbo with that at the momment.

Gosh wish we paid 4$ a gallon lol

If you add our electricity bills to the gas/heat bills it comes to roughly what your paying, I know its off topic, but Petrol companys are making billions in profits along with goverments taking a huge chunk out of that on petrol duty, it wont be long till a meltdown occurs in the uk, I can see our goverment being out of office/or a huge demonstration leading possibly to loss of confidence in browns goverment, and going to the country for another election, it happened before, it could happen again...
soon if energy bills dont get capped somehow. your retirement figure is huge, in relation to the small lump sum my partner got with a reduced pension, only about 6000$, you did mean 401,000US$ ? or did u mean 40,000US $ lol

Glad Im not the only person moaning lol

hope to see u all again thursday bye until then folks

Contact your bank, tell them those payments should be authorised, and they if that can't do it, you'll switch to a bank that can.

The OPs electron card is a debit card, but not a particularly versatile one, nor is it popular with merchants.

Unless the bank upgrades the card to a Visa Debit, or hands over a credit card, the prepaid option is probably best, albeit as Ordinal correctly suggests, obtainable at a premium.

Off topic a bit, but my advice is to avoid Electron like the plague (same goes for Solo cards). If your bank will only give you an Electron - move banks.

Visa Debit, Switch and Maestro are classed as credit cards in the UK; they are debit cards, but because they work on a 3 day authorisation system, they are classed as credit under the Consumer Credit Act. Electron and Solo have a live, real time, authorisation system.

For this reason, Electron and Solo are issued to under 18s and to people with poor credit ratings. Your bank are insulting you by issuing you with an Electron card. Close your account and move immediately. Unless you are under 18 or have bad credit, inwhich case you're on your own.

Michaelatv, sorry to hear of your woes. Just for information, I'm UK and have had no problem with the Halifax Credit Card since I joined in 06.
Good luck sorting out.
