Old Sim upgraded to Class 5?

My neighboring sim Zale, in the Moth continent, had quite a few problems over the last few weeks, it was always going down. I spend most of my time building in the 2 sims Mocis and Lunata above and below it, and tonight, while flying through Zale, I could not help but notice that it was missing its usual lag. It was 1.00 dilation and 45fps!

So, I use the Sim Neighbours Registrator and found that Zale, is now sharing with Aleksandr! Aleksandr is a class 5 sim (I think) in the new unnamed continent! I went to Aleksandr with the Registrator as well and Sim Neighbours confirmed the update.

Is this the first time an "old" sim has been moved to a class 5 server? Maybe the servers used on Moth and the other older continents are being phased out as they go bad?

I would think they would want to update the old sims at some point, I certainly hope they do.
Lets hope it is the beginning of a postive trend in that regard. :)

Other sim west of here, Bhaga, is also in Texas now, but Sim Neighbours does not know who it shares server with.

Are all servers in the Texas Colo Class 5?

Would also be nice if there was a list. Hey Jack: upgrade Carlisle to Class 5!

I am not sure if the "Sim Neighbours" project (http://neighbours.maxcase.info/) gives correct information about your neighbours. When a region restart it goes to the first available server of that class.

More about sim 'movements' in these threads:

Considering that sims can move between servers of the same class, but not between colocations, there would have to be quite a few class 4 sims in Texas for it to be worthwhile for LL.

So far I haven't found any (although that probably doesn't mean a whole lot :p) so it's probably safe to assume that Texas = class 5 exclusively.

Then again, Texas has a whole load of problems of its own and I far prefer SF sims :).

I used traceroute and these sim in Moth (old continent) are now in Dallas and they don't have any lag now as they did before. Dilation 1.00, Sim FPS 45, script time <10.

Zale is on the same host as Aleksandr. I went to both sims, looked at their IP addresses in the Help About SL menu, and they had the same IP addresses. Zale is on the old moth continent, Aleksandr is on the newer unnamed continent that I believe is all class 5 sims. Zale was a class 3 or maybe a class 4. I don't know.

I have spent most of my SL time in Mocis, Zale and Lunata, and there is definitely a change in performance for the better that was never there before.

It would be nice for LL to announce little things like this because it is really exciting for us residents on older, laggy sims to know there is a plan in motion to upgrade these sims.

If this is a private island, I think they will announce to you tomorrow - out of the blue - that they will raise your 'maintenance' fee from 195 to 295. Just like they did with the European VAT.

THe Ls have SAID that sims don't move between locations but that is not strictly true. They may not automatically move but My class 4 sims were originally moved to Texas when that facility opened. Now they are back in SF. Someone obviously moved them at some point. All my sims are class 4.

Also at some point it was possible to PAY to upgrade your sim from class 4 to class 5. Increasing your tier by $100/mo as well. That may still be possible if you contact concierge, I'm sure they aould LOVE to get people off of the older hardware and make more money at the same time.

I do wonder when it will be that all class 4 sims are auto-upgraded to class 5 though, they can't hang on to the class 4 hardware forever, the machines are slowly going to break down and go out of service till there is no more room left for all the class 4 sims. LL said that in January 2008 LL they were going to revisit the issue of class 4 tiers... we might find out then :/

Nope - it was only class 3 to class 5. It was also only for private islands - no mainland - and cost a one-time fee of US$400 in addition to the tier bump to US$295/month.

I don't have a url, but that was revised in a later blog post to US$200, and no loss of grandfathering.

edit: found the entry! http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/02/changes-to-the-class-3-upgrade-offer/

As somebody who lives in the middle of the S continent, I don't expect to see this happen to my sim any time soon.. :( Still, that'd be great if they're upgrading the mainland.

Do you know what class Zale used to be? Any chance it was an old class-3 sim? Any idea if it was in Texas or California?

I have land above and below Zale, and they are California sims because their IP address are on the network there. With the sim neighbours website, that I visit frequently (daily sometimes) over the last 9 months, they always had no more than 2 sims listed per host, which is a class 3. Of course sim neighbours web sight relies on the Registron to update it with data. I don't think it matters if it was class 3 or 4, the fact is Zale and the others I mentioned previously are now class 5!

November is I believe is Grandfathered sim increase time. I think they said that they'd give 60 days notice but as they've sort of already said prices will rise, this may mean they consider that they've already given 60 days notice.

Well, if they were actually a class 3, nobody is going to be too surprised they they've been upgraded to the latest hardware. Many believe that class 3's are already extinct.

If they're class 4, that's a different story...

They did guarantee that they would honour the grandfathered rate at least through 2007.

They updated Koreshan from a god knows what to a class 4 (this is what LL said) and it's still a lagfest, probably because class 4 is not much of an update.

Does anyone know what's the highest class servers LL has?
