When you reboot your sim, how often do you get a "new" server ?

I'm just curious about this. I know that periodically LL rotates the servers. Is it every time it crashes or reboots ? TIA. :)

I think there's a fair amount of data to move when a sim changes its server home. I'd guess (and I think I've heard LL say) that the sim will always try to come back up on the same server unless they tell it to move. There may be some automated process that moves the sim if the server is having problems but I've never heard of it.

Aaaahhhh - they rotate the servers !

That will explain why the wires keep falling out of the back of them then !

In 5 months I've had to reboot my sim less than a dozen times. I do monitor the actual hostname, and I would say that every single time I've rebooted my sim, it has come up on another server.

Additionally, on the rare occasions when it's crashed itself, it almost always comes up on a different server.

The only times it consistently comes up on the same server, is when LL does a rolling restart or grid maintenance.

I guess I'm not too surprised it comes up on a different server after a crash. A bit but not too bad.

That it comes up on a different one after a reboot is surprising. Apparently, estate owners who keep a close eye on things like neighbours.maxcase.info can get their sim off a laggy server just by rebooting it.

Before I bought my island, I was having performance problems with the mainland sim my store was located in. I wrote a HUD script that shows me the server name of whatever sim I am in, along with some performance stats. That was in january or february.. so I have say 6 or 7 months now of having the server name 'in my face' and have gotten kind of used to seeing it and monitoring it.

Rebooting the sim because of generally poor performance can *sometimes* work from what I've read. I have only done this once and in that occasion it did seem to improve performance. I'd say though that the first course of action is always to check that your own sim isn't the one causing the problems in the first place, i.e. use the other debugging tools available.

I heard a rumour on the internet that they have an arrangement a bit like a giant version of a rotisserie oven, only it's actually a rotisserie fridge, and all the servers are on spits that gently rotate. Apparently it takes about three weeks to complete one rotation.
