From: Marty Starbrook I can imagine it now ..... " My child commited a unlawfull act.... fraud...forgery and deception to access an adult site and when he got thier it was full of adult stuff... i wish to complain" cant see it standing up in court somehow *s* When you can beat McDonalds in court because you ate their food and got fat, or burned yourself driving with "hot" coffee (as if there's any other kind when the cup says Hot Coffee), you can pull off just about anything in court. These courts here in the US are so fug stupid they awarded close to $200 million in damages to some idiot who smoked and got cancer from it. As if it wasn't on the damned box that continued use could be a problem, for whatever reason. Never put idiocy past the people and government of this country. Over a thousand people a year in the U.S. are killed by vending machines. Exactly HOW does a candy machine become fatal without epic levels of dumb being applied? Not just a sprinkling; the whole box! LOL

From: Dnali Anabuki I don't think this is true. Porn used the web but it was not responsible for the web taking off. I think of porn using media as the ad cutters of life. However, erotica or Temple's of Love or the Sacred Prostitute..very cool IMHO. Actually it's very true. Ten years or so ago 50%-70% of the income being generated on the internet was through the adult industry. Not only was it responsible for the income, it drove the technology. Streaming media, verification and pay systems, banner farming, click-through marketing, entry and exit popups (in fact the whole popup plague), portal sites, search engine optimization and manipulation...these ideas all came directly from the adult industry's discovery of the internet. had they not been embraced as universally by adult consumers, they never would have bled out into the mainstream. The reason it is not universally known that this is the case is because the adult industry is everyone's dirty little secret that everyone wants to appear to be above and too good for. I actually designed three times as many adult sites in my time in the industry for "upstanding and mainstream" individuals and companies than I ever did for adult industry personnel. Everyone is too moral for porn. But they're just fine with the money it generates. Danni Ashe changed all that when her company popped up on the stock exchange and she became the first recognized millionaire from online adult business. Now, it's not porn. It's "adult entertainment". LOL

And, the ubiquity of porn on the internet, and the reportedly nearly ubiquitous viewing of it by men, is having dramatic impacts on life and culture that are still being assessed and evaluated currently.

Ya. The hypocrisy of our democracy always used to rear its head in amusing fashion at job interviews. When asked to provide a portfolio of sites for company review there was a time where everything I had done for the past 6 straight years was adult related. Great use of technology and design principles, but not exactly something you can show the CEO of XYZ company. With no exceptions, whether or not I got the job; whether or not they passed my porfolio links on, every single interviewer asked me if I had backdoors or user/pass combos for some sites. Whatever facade of morality they were trying to uphold during the pre-screening process went right out the window when things were off the record. I was even asked if I appeared on any of my sites in addition to designing them, and not to be "weeded out" either. Lots of ground-in dirt in this country's laundry. Gonna have to "Shout it out"

Hehe that's pretty funny! But yes the internet has "mainstreamed" porn into our society now. I'm not a prude in the least about porn, but I do think that this is having impacts that we don't yet have the ability to measure and assess at this time.

Like the effect on body image. Breast implants becoming so common, that teenage girls and their parents with too much disposable income are getting them. Why else, but for the effect of porn? Most men can't tell what real breasts are supposed to look like anymore.

One more reason for me to invest wisely. If I'm ever "dying" for a Coke they can take the hush money right out of my dividends

From: Sunni Jewell As for teens getting their parents information, and just using it to verify themselves, how many parents actually leave their credit cards, social security cards and driver's licenses where their kids can get them? If beta is anything to go by, they won't need to know where their credit cards, social security cards or divers licence is. Just knowing their name, date of birth and address will be enough. I don't really see how they can tighten up the beta process because in many countries the extra information Integrity are asking for (but don't require) can't be verified by Integrity. What we will see is plenty of verified minors, a lot more than have payment info used or on file. If this process was actually putting barriers in front of kids accessing the grid then I'd support it wholeheartedly, but from my experience, it's just making it easier not only for kids, but also for adults to defraud the system.

If being verified and having our land marked as restricted gives LL (or, more importantly, me) some legal protection, I'm for it. Aside from requiring people to show up at LLs door and offer some physical proof, what else can be done? If this is the best effort they can make, why not make it?

From: Meade Paravane If being verified and having our land marked as restricted gives LL (or, more importantly, me) some legal protection, I'm for it. That's a very big If and nowhere has it been said that residents are legally protected, residents are legally responsible however. Without getting into what should and shouldn't be restricted anyway. LL are placing the onus on land owners to Police their land 24/7 and they simply can't do that. From: Meade Paravane Aside from requiring people to show up at LLs door and offer some physical proof, what else can be done? If this is the best effort they can make, why not make it? Well for a start LL could have requested that I allow them to share my information with Integrity. Which is realistically what this is intended to do. Then they'd have had payment info from me and a company saying "Yup he's over 18". Ergo even though Visa won't vouch for my age, Integrity will and LL have an audit trail back to someone with the same name and address. As it stands the information LL have on me does not have to match the information Integrity have on me.

Because there are 3rd parties in RL that can fill out a form in person and verify you are a certain age, without revealing even your name or anything else about you. Notaries are one example. The system as being handed us, will accomplish nothing but falsely "verifying" minors as though they are adults. In the case of some serious crime against a minor, LL would not even be legally protected, by such a flimsy and obviously ineffective system.

Which is why it baffles me about the gender identification issue really. If someone is verified as over 18 what need is there of the rest of the info. Again, from my workplace, there are certain levels of verification where say Driver's Licence or Passport is required and people do NOT like that one bit. However ... them's the rules we have to abide by under the Gaming Act so ... I dunno. I don't want kids in my place, I know that much. Not sure that this will make any difference at all to that.
