A Simple Prefab Home

I cannot for the life of me find a simple prefab home that fits my skybox plot. I just want it to be simple, as in one big room, maybe a little room off to the side as a bedroom. Any suggestions?? I think custom would be best but I don't even know where I'd begin.

Building one yourself is probably the best way. Start on the ground, so you can make it fit the parcel of land. Build a prim and stretch it out flat to 10m x 10m as big as it will go. Copy it and drag the copy so that it lays alongside, so you have a 10m x 20m floor. This will fit in a rectangular 512m parcel. You can save prims in the walls by making a hollow cube and path-cut to 50% leaving you with a 2 sided wall. 2 of these plus 2 more flat prims will make the walls. Make the walls about 6m high to accommodate your camera as you're walking round inside. You could put a dividing wall in here too, to separate the bedroom from the living room. Finally copy the 2 floor prims, drag them up to make the roof, and link the whole thing together, and texture it as you wish (there are masses of free textures at the NCI if you lack some).

When you're done, edit the skybox position to 500m high or wherever you want it to be, and you can either use a flight feather to fly up to it, or tp into it by editing the height on your map.

I buy prefab homes all the time and have found plenty - what size footprint are you looking for, and what style? Maybe I can point you to some builders.

By the way - speaking of foot prints, I've only run into one builder, Effulgent Brown, that gives you a free foot print of her larger builds so you can make sure it fits before you buy. Absolutely brilliant, don't know why others don't do it. Japanese style only and some technical flaws, though. But great value for the prices.

Where to begin? Do a search on Ivory Tower - it's the best free tutorial I've run across. Another option is to buy a large prefab that you can copy and modify. You can experiment with building by modifying it (deleting stuff you don't want may be sufficient) and since it's copiable, you can re-rez it intact if it doesn't work out.

I'm building one right now, it's not hard, just time consuming.

/me raises hand. Effulgent's not the only one. I do that, too *g*

Brianna, if you'd like me to create you a simple prefab, look me up inworld. If all that you want is a simple two-room home then I could knock you one together in an hour or so. Alternatively, I have a couple of readymade prefabs (one single-room Renaissance-style house, one Steampunk-style split-level loft) that might suit. I'm not inworld right now, but send me an IM and when I log I'll get back to you :)

And hey, I'm awfully cheap. Just don't tell my partner :p

Cool! I like the "free footprint" idea enough that it's worth looking at your builds, but your profile wasn't helpful in that regard.

here is a tip for anyone who is making the flat prims and then another flat prim just like the first and right next to it

instead of making the copy and spending the time to align them together try this....

while the first is in the edit mode... select the build icon (looks like the magic wand on the edit window) then check the box "copy selected" and "center copy" then using the magic wand, click the side of the prim that you want the new prim to bump up against, and there ya have it, another prim, just like the first, perfectly aligned and right next to the first (excellent for building floors and walls that require the same prim to be repeated over and over

(if the above is unclear, get a hold of me in world, for some reason it is easier to explain/understand when going through it with someone step by step

That's a good tip. Some of my walls were a bit off center, and I got gaps as well. I'm calling it quits for now, it was a learning experience.

I don't have the store in my picks right now because it's still being worked on. I guess I should put up some 'under construction' boards and just have at it LOL

If you don't mind the builders being in, then you can find some of it (still a lot more to go up, vendors to be re-designed etc) then you can find it at:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Jindalrae/32/17/445

Once it's all finished, then I'll put it in my picks.

/me grins. That's exactly how I do it, Rhaorth. So much easier, especially for aligning walls. And the easiest way to avoid prim flicker on the overlaps is to texture the short edges with a pure alpha, too.

For anyone trying this, though, don't forget to uncheck that option when you're done. Or the next time you're trying to make something new, you might end up with a copy of your building platform...

No, that's not the voice of experience talking. Not at all. *cough*

Yeah, I know. I can build, but prefer to buy, too. Not having to buy textures alone is often worth it.

House of Effulgent has a prefab that fits on 30x30 footprint for $L1200 called the White Phoenix. It's a white, oriental palace, basically one room, but on 3 floors (231 prims). It's close to what the store itself looks like. Not identical, but close. Despite it's small footprint, the builder suggests 8000 sq. meters, but I think that's probably because of the difficulties of making it look right on land because it's so tall, which isn't an issue in a Skybox.

Another of my favorite builders is Creative Fantasy Home & Gardens. A lot more expensive & prim intensive, but very well done.

Wow, very nice! Your prices are too low, but I guess if the object isn't rezzed for view, they pretty much have to be, or people won't take the risk. I'm only in the market for Japanese atm (got 3 on the property I'm working on, heh), but have been looking for nice "fire" related stuff, so I bought the fire stuff you had for sale. Very nice!! If the OP is looking for Steampunk, (what you have for sale seems to fit the OP's description of what is wanted) I don't think he or she could beat what you've made, especially considering the price!

Thank you :)

I know they're low prices, and deliberately so. I've found that people just won't buy at higher prices, unless the build is sufficiently primmy and detailed. Since my home builds trend toward lower-prim (that range is called - or will be once the signage is up - Primflints, for those on a prim budget) and large size (three-storeys for less than 70 prims) then lower prices seem to work better. The majority of them are nothing spectacular when compared to the higher-prim builds you see elsewhere inworld, but they provide a roomy and low-prim place to call home. I'm currently working on a neighbour-friendly set of the big skyboxes, with blue sky external textures, because the really big builds *could* be a bit of an eyesore if rezzed right next to a neighbour ;)

I have a couple more fireplaces to go up in the store. Haven't finished the ad textures yet, though. I'm too slow!

Primflints - I like it! Excellent marketing strategy. Personally, that's my preference in a house. I buy the pre-fabs, then trim the excess do-dads out anyway.

I'd rather put the prims in landscaping- plants, water, waterfalls, caves, etc.

Now if someone could only come up with "Primflints" furniture! I've got 4 lanterns that I'd like to use that equal the prims in small house. :/ (I'm into "lighting" these days, much struck by how much light (and shadows) improve the looks of build, which was why I was very pleased with your fire places and pots).

Do people object to what's done with Skyboxes? I put mine at 400+ meters - are you talking about something lower, or are my neighbors grinding their teeth at my building experiments in my Skybox?

I recently discovered Sculptomancy. While the name may sound a little pretentious, I have to say, it's well-earned. The things the creator do with sculpted prims is near black magic, including such things as 2-prim trees and 1-prim chairs and tables. I remember seeing some lamps and lanterns there as well.

I think as long as your skybox isn't rezzed right next to theirs (and there is a lotta space up there, so it's relatively easy to find a clear view) then nobody would really complain. It's just if a neighbour has their draw distance set quite far and they can see a large brick 'box', they might consider it something of an eyesore. My large Primflints boxes are pretty big (20x20 footprint, and 30m high) and on the outside there are no windows, so they *could* be regarded as ugly by anyone in close proximity. Which is why I'm working on the neighbour-friendly versions of those. They won't blend in completely with the sky, but they also won't risk annoying the neighbours ;)

Is it too late to mention the very popular freebie TNT house available at Noob Island? One up, one down with window tints and blinds. Might look a little odd as a skybox mind.

Skybox? ..... look odd? .... never!! ;)

there are plenty of free skyhomes that would fit that sized plot on www.onrez.com & www.slexchange.com...infact there is a rather nice newyork skyloft skyhome there that came out last night- for free :)
