... "policing" features such as the Events section of this site? The section is designed for players to post events... NOT advertise their businesses or services! You are required to read and agree to the rules before posting. It's obvious that LL don't bother keeping a check on something that requires that you in effect sign an agreement. And it makes me FUME!
Me and my team work hard... putting in many hours and money... to run a sim for the enjoyment of others... with no profit whatsoever... and pay for Classifieds as we can afford it. And to see people getting away with advertising in the Events section makes me FUME! (Oh! Did I say that already?)
How in the name of all that is holy, can stuff like this be considered an event?
*WE HAVE BEAUTIFUL BEACH FRONT PROPERTY FOR RENT AT GREAT PRICES. WE CURRENTLY HAVE A COUPLE HOUSES AND A FEW STORES EACH WITH HIGH PRIMS AND REASONABLE RATES. We've added a 3rd floor to our store, where we have put all our household furniture! Use the Teleporter System to get around!
Included in our clothing store: casuals, formals, for both men and women, flexi, non flexi dresses, flex and non flex hair for both men and women, mens and womens shoes, lingerie and accessories, and a wedding boutique. 1st and 2nd floors!
Furniture includes every room of the house! Kitchens, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Living Rooms, Lighting, Artwork, we have it all! 3rd floor!
Also, enjoy our very serene and peaceful garden center which includes fire pits, an outdoor bbq, and picnic table, water fountains, hot tubs, wind chimes, a beach area to relax in, flowers, animals, free environmental sounds, giant wall murals.
Free gifts offered throughout the store & gardens!*
It's about time LL did something about this, and make these people pay for advertising and abide by the rules like the rest of us. ARGHHHHHH! It makes me FUME!
I searched for a way to actually complain to LL themselves, but can't find any way that covers thiis kind of thing. I'm just hoping that one of them actually "policies" the forums and reads this post!
Does this make anyone else FUME?

I just use events for Education and Discussion subgroups, the rest seems to be spam city.

not any more, it used to. It was actually a lot worse when the casinos were around. In fact all forms of inworld advertising were. I was a little crazed then, but now they actually are visable, so in actuality to me, it's better than before. Maybe that is far too optomistic on my part.

*sigh* This is precisely my point. How many others ignore the section because of these people? How many other decent hard working people lose out because of these people? Thanks for the suggestion to file a report. I didn't realise I could that for something like this. Still FUMING!

From: Cheree Bury What does everyone think about charging for Events listings? errr the people who want to advertise 'real' events are usually indicating a free service, they might actually not want to pay for that, but the ones being complained about would use it as a secondary classifies and because they financially gain from their services would be still there abusing it?

The Events listing has been abused for years now. There was a brief attempt on the part of LL to clean it up and slap some hands, but apparently that fizzled out.
Paid listings have been suggested and pooh-poohed. Resident policing has been suggested and also shot down. Basically, unless LL has someone comb through the listings each day, Events is gonna be chock full o' crap.

Oh, yes, the events listing has been abused for as long as I've been in SL. In fact, LL has occasionally posted their threats of punishment via warning then banning.. but after a spat of bannings, the threats then become meaningless.
I don't bother with the events because of this anymore.

Cracks me up that when we go to post an ACTUAL event, we are suppose to read and agree to the rules "governing" this posting. However, why bother even having to do that extra step when obviously it isn't policed, just as mulitple postings by the same vendor/person for the same "event", at the same time isn't policed. If you lay down rules that are suppose to govern a specific activity (ie posting an event), but don't follow through on the reprecussions for NOT following the rules, the rules become laughable at best.

From: Cristalle Karami I only search for live music. Ditto! It's a shame that events isn't used for its intended purpose but there's a custom and practice issue now, people are so used to seeing it misued that that they expect to see incorrect events listed.

OK, I recently opened a store that advertises other people's things, and am honestly not trying to plug anything, but have an idea spinning in my head.
Someone mentioned to me that they thought it would be a good idea to do a similar thing for Events, amongst other things, as the events listing is full of property for sale and other stuff that are not really events., if that makes any sense. What I am talking about is somewhere people holding real events can come and put up a poster and include a notecard giving details about the event that event-seekers can take away with them.
To be honest, if I can work out the logistics re the prims and getting the signs to work, I would be happy to host something like this for free, or for a nomimal sum like L$1 per week per ad.
Does this sound like a crazy idea? Obviously if I am doing this for nothing than I can't be spending money on advertising. Does anyone think this might work?

I've been here close to three years, and the Events forum has been a spam trashpile that whole time. Real events are out-numbered by spam by at least 20 to 1, and often by far more. I don't even bother to look at it any more. Waste of tme, weeding through the chaff.
You can AR every one of those fake events and permenant yardsales, but unless it's a really blatant offender, the LL staff gave up long ago on maintaining any real order there.

Joss, it does sound like an idea. Some things to keep in mind though:
1.) You'd have to really spread the word to people who attend real events that they can get event info at your place.
2.) You'd have to police the dickens outta your listings. Much as with escorts using dating service ads, you will find people with fake events (and probably also escorts) utilizing automatic rent-a-signs. Nature of the beast.
3.) A lot of clubs and venues hold many events per week - or even per day. Would they be able to rotate their event info out on the same sign, or would they have to rent a new sign? Would they in fact be renting a sign, or paying to place their own object up?
The thought of having an in-world clearinghouse for all the real events - trivia, costume affairs, dances, poetry readings, etc. - really makes me smile.

I have actually been thinking of doing this same thing, my store rentals are not doing so well, so I have been tossing around an idea or two for the space and that was one of the ideas... basically ad boards, that folks can use (at a nominal fee) to place an ad for their events, good for 1 day up to 1 week or something like that *shrug* then folks looking for events could come, check out what is happening and when... (just not gonna be able to sort them) hmmm wonder if I could .... nah do not know enough about programming and scripting to do something like that LOL oh well maybe I will try the ad board idea... we will see

I think the auto rental boards such as used by escorts would be the best bet... policing them would be a pain, which is why I thought it would be worth it to those who want to place an event there, would not mind paying for it (within reason) if a place has multiple events per week, they could include a notecard with all the events info, and of course a lm, then at the place of the event they could have a notecard giver which could then give out more up to date info they can also pop in and change the info anytime I am seriously considering do this...

Events started on the slow spiral of death around late 2004/early 2005. First it was a few events that were not (ie, sales, store openings, yard sales), then it became more blatant things like "Free L$", and.... well. Clip to the present. This week your event has to be posted the hard way, or have decent word of mouth to draw a crowd. As for the events calendar... it's been a lost cause for three years strong now.

I wonder how many people would visit an in world location to see what kind of events (real events) are advertised...
no land sales, no escort ads, no store classifieds, nothing of those sorts...
things like... classes, live performances, club events, that kind of thing..
(I picture it as a building of sorts, that you walk into and there is a section for each type of event, so you can go to that section and hopefully find things that interest you)
I wonder how many who run events would advertise in such a place
I wonder how such a place would advertise to those two groups.. event makers and event attendees

I'm a pretty ardent eventgoer, and I'd do my best to promote a place like you suggest (i.e., put it in my Picks, share it with applicable groups, word-of-mouth to friends). Heck, I'd probably even donate a lil' bit of $L to help keep the place going. It'd be such a refreshing way to approach the whole idea of Events advertising.
