I know that these questions might be foolish, but guess what, I born on December 26th so I'm still new...

1º sometimes I'm flying but it seams I can't fly so high as some others, is there a way to increase it?

2º if you don't read some of these posts how do you find your interest locations? I'm not talking about clubing or shoping but those places like Dresdnen gallery, Greenies and so on....

3º although the official guide have some old info (i.e. first 512sqm) it's a good book to buy? I'm thinking about the building chapters...

Hi and welcome

1) You need a flght feather, or similar, which you right click and wear which will make you fly higher. I will send you one of the New Resident's kits in world which includes a flight feather, and there are some other useful things in it also.

2) Someone else will have to answer this, I don't get out much!!!

3) I've got the book, but the building chapters are not really that helpful. You would be better to go to the Ivory Tower and work through their tutorials - there's much more info there than in the book.

Have fun.

There is a limit on how high you can fly and it's quite low, however there's a trick you can do with objects but the easiest way is to get a flight feather, I believe you can get them for free if you search around.

Very good question, I've been at meetings with Lindens where they've asked about good places to visit, as if they were going to promote places but I guess they fear being accused of favouritism. A sticky in the forums would be nice.

I haven't read it but a good place to pick up building tips is the Ivory Tower ...I think it's the Ivory Tower. They have loads of building tutorials there and it's a nice place.

Hi Nuno,

The only foolish question is the one not asked ;)

To fly above a certain height you need a flight assist, like a flight feather or flight band.
I'll send you one if you haven´t got one already. All you do is right/click it in your inventory and `wear`.

2º if you don't read some of these posts how do you find your interest locations? I'm not talking about clubing or shoping but those places like Dresdnen gallery, Greenies and so on.... [/QOUTE]

I found a lot places by just typing fairly random words into `search´ and `places´, plus had places recommended to me by friends. Also finding people with similar interests to yourself (through groups for example) can be a good way to disover new places to explore. There are also many many websites that describe and recommend places to explore.

Can´t help you on the official guide, but there is an awful lot of information available on these forums.
For building tips you could check here: /8/1.html or inworld the Ivory Tower of Prims.
For texturing tips: /109/1.html

Land questions, you're probably best asking here and checking the sticky posts at the top.

Hope this help and keep the questions coming.

:)

ETA .... I´m typing too slowly :D A sticky for places to visit would be cool and has been suggested many times before, but it could also get outdated very quickly. I have been working on compiling the 100s of tips from recent threads on the subject, but lost inspiration and have had other things on my mind.

Welcome to SL Nuno, so Christmas was so boring, Boxing Day you found SecondLife huh? :)

The Flight Feather is my aid to reaching higher altitudes also.

If you are after parks and other recreational sims, look for my avatar in Search, and open the web tab of my profile for a link to the Guyler website which should give you lots of suggestions.

I've never personally tried the Ivory Tower of Prims but have heard it can seem a little daunting to newcomers. I think a popular recommendation is to search in-world for building classes in addition to the tower.

Good luck and welcome again!

Sally! how did you get 'QUOTE' misspelled? You don't even have to type it in the reply usually .. jumps up and down .. bad speeling! .. wa-aa! ... /rant off ;)

Actually hadn´t thought of it that way, but that could be true.... I never even went there until I´d messed around with building for a bit.

To search for classes, go into search, then look for events, education. I know the NCI classes are highly recommended, but I´m sure there are other great ones out there as well.

Nuno,
1) I recommend the Mystitool. Even the $1 version gives you flight assistance options
2) For places to vist try the following RA thread:
/327/1c/229319/1.html
3) Try Natalia Zelmanov's blog - http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/search/label/*%20Getting%20Started%20in%20Second%20Life%20Guide%20* for tutorials or join New Citizens Inc for classes

I don't recommend the Official Guide. The information in it isn't detailed enough, in most cases. There's some interesting bits about the history of SL, and some about prominent avatars. But it's not worth the cost, in my opinion.

Yeah to someone who is here I'd definitely say that. I guess if someone is contemplating SL but doesn't have the thought to look for information here, I guess it's better than nothing, but it is pretty much fluff, in the First Bling sense.

I've found a lot of interesting places by checking out the snapshots at Snapzilla (sluniverse.com/pics) and making a note of the location of really cool places in the pics. I've started keeping a list, which is in a dispenser at my shops (see my picks) and which I'll probably be updating soon.

I found some interesting places by a combination of searching for a particular item and then exploring that area while I was there. I then find some other interesting item and look at it's creators profile and TP to their Picks. I've had three rows of creator profiles minimized, so I could explore them all.

I found Hobo, while shopping for Hot Rods. Or did I find the Hot Rods while I was shopping for the Trailer home?

Anyway. Once I was there I found this sewer system and started exploring it. It was so cool to me, that I looked for it's creator which then lead me to placing a Slum Apartment and Taxi cab on my 'city' land.

Now I wish I could find those unsurfable waves that broke like a real pipeline. I don't even remember how I ended up there, and I didn't save a landmark.

The other thing I like to do, is fly along the coast line (I have also have 'beach' land and I'm looking for ideas).

Some more questions
01-15-2008 02:23
Thanks for the tips :)

Anyway, here are some other questions:

- what's the advantage of seeing on SL web site who from our friends list is online? If we are in-world we can also see it... It could be better if we could send IM through SL website, don't you think?

- pose balls use any prim? if I put a pose ball on a 1p pillow it will turns into a 2p pillow?

- how do I creat a wall and put a texture on one side and another on the other side?

- any of you have ever gave a birthday party in your in-world house? did you got any cake? what have you done (I'm thinking on doing one)

The advantage could be that you can check who is online before you log in. Whay you'd want to know is beyond me, but I'm sure people have their reasons. You can IM your friends while you're offline via www.zonkster.com

Yes.

- how do I creat a wall and put a texture on one side and another on the other side?

In the edit window, choose "select texture" then click on the side you want to texture. Hold down Shift to select multiple sides.

A couple of people threw me a surprise birthday party at a live music event last weekend. Cake and live music, banner, baloons, musician jumping out of a cake and playing. Very cool, cried my eyes out.
I've been to a few birthday parties, usually, cake, drinks, music, decorations and presents. Great fun.

Hope that helps

:)

Yes it would, but currently we can't.

Yes.

You go to edit and the 'select texture' box. Click the face of the prim on which you want a specific texture and choose it. You should see a crossed circle (target symbol) on the face selected.

I have cake. IM me in world and I will send it to you. I also have other party stuff. I'll send that too, although making it is easy enough with a little practise.

You can set your offline IMs to go to your e-mail in communications preferences (note... is not working for me at the moment for some weird reason). You can also reply to those that you receive that way via your e-mail (within five days if I remember correctly) but they would then receive your RL e-mail info.
Otherwise, they'd have to use Zonkster as well.

Hi Nuno and welcome to SL and the forums! In case anyone hasn't done it yet, I've sent you an invite to the Forum Cartel hangout - lots of cool avatars (someday I hope to be one too lol), help, dancing on the ceiling etc....

In answer to your question, have your IMs sent to an email address (Edit/Preferences/Communication) - that way you can pick them up and respond to them from your email. Each IM has a unique identifier that lasts for about 3 to 4 days, so you can respond as and when.

And you're welcome to come and visit my sims anytime - some fun things like balloon rides, a replica of Stonehenge, etc.....

click and select open on the image in your inventory so it opens up in your window, make sure its selected, go to File on the menu on the pop down select "Save Texture As…" and it will download to your desktop

This is a great suggestion.

I also just ask people. "So, what are some of the cooler things you've seen in SL?" I either collect LMs or keep a notecard with their suggestions, and I've discovered a lot of neat stuff that way.
