pawn shops in SL?

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as pawn shops in SL?

This is something I have thought about doing... creating a pawnshop, where I would buy stuff from folks that no longer want it, hold it for a week in case they want it back, and after a week, I put it out for sale.

The item would have to be no copy, transfer of course LOL

(and I would make the final decision as to if I want to purchase something or not, just like any pawn shop in RL)

Does anyone know if such a thing in SL exists, and if not, do you think it would work?

would you visit one to shop? would you visit one to try to pawn your stuff (sell your stuff)?

Lol...cool idea. Can't be worse that anything else in the "Spectacular Failures" thread.

I think it has potential, but you would need a good system to manage it....just like a r/l shop would keep records and give out pawn tickets and stuff.

I'd probably shop there, or just visit to check out the stuff. I go to R/L pawnshops to check stuff out, so why not here?

Where you might make big bucks (or big failures) is if you allowed people to pawn their land.

Sounds like a great idea in theory.
However buying no copy items is a no go for me.

I can't afford more tier LOL (would have to have tier to do pawned land)

I just might go ahead and do this, just for the fun of it

will be interesting to see if anyone does come (I can always start it off with some of my own stuff that I purchased elsewhere but no longer ever use) basically a yardsale in the form of a pawnshop, until people actually use it as a pawn shop

but first I have to decide where to put it, THEN build it LOL

yeah I would do the ticket thing, just as a notecard (no mod, no copy, with the name of the item and price in the name and description of the card)

it would only work for no copy, otherwise folks can not transfer it to sell it to me, and I would not be able in turn set it for sale in the shop :)

This would be a different way for folks to get rid of the stuff in their inventory they no longer use

Understood . but due to the flakey nature of the LL inventory this would always be an adventure.

I wish you well.

I wrote a vendor a while back that would be perfect for this. You put their stuff in a box, name the box with their name and follow it with the price and put the box in the vendor. They come along and touch the box and it sets FastPay with the price. It will only sell that item to that person. It can handle up to 4 items per person (as long as they all have different prices), but is not limited to just one person's items.

I never tested it very well and there is no documentation, but I did finish the coding. I wasn't sure if there would be a market for such a thing. But this idea sound perfect for it. You could allow people to buy back their stuff even when you aren't online.

Let me know if you would like to beta test it for me.

I guess if person had money to spend and could afford to lose money if no one bought example Jane Public bought Uposer for 20k to 15k new from owner, really needs 5k this week, willing to pay
a additional 1k to 5 to get it back. If she can't but can pay back within certain cut off date say 35 days has to pay 1k a week for every week it is held up to pay another 5k to get it back or item will be resold for 10k possibly that could work providing it sales.
Items example there is high end object cost 150k new from creator, and there is also documentation for the value of item, and resell value i.e buyers who buy for less, if loan worked then yes.
150k item with proper documentation and has resell value, i.e someone will buy if loan didn't work
for 75k, a loan could be provided for half of resell value.
One would need buyers for items on waiting list saying I want such and such for x amount.
And one would need people bringing in items for loans or to sell items at lower cost then what they bought it for.
Worse comes to worse the pawn broker is out of money and has to deal with a whole lot of newbies trying to sell items that have no rebuy value.
Yet the orginal creator of high end items may have issue with a Pawn broker reselling their 20k to 150k item for half.
And someone who can spend 150k to 20k for one specific item probably doesn't need a Pawn Broker.
Also if something went amuck with LL and vendors or automated system broke down or bugged out all sort of issues could run amuck with no copy items.

FD there is no way I would be doing this with items that are in the price range you mentioned
and I always reserve the right to not purchase anything, and of course I offer them a price, and they have the right to not sell to me

of course they will have to sell for less than they paid for it, and of course I would mark it up when I sell it, otherwise it would make no sense to do it as a business

and if someone sets something as transfer they have no say in what the next owner sells it for, or even if they give it away. That is not of any concern to me, what the creator of an item I purchase from someone who bought it from them, thinks about me selling it for less than what the original creator sells it for (if that makes sense)

Basically this "Pawn Shop" is just a fancy word for yardsale that I am getting the stock for from people who want to unload some stuff from their inventory quickly, without the hassle of setting up their own yardsale

I was thinking pretty much along the same lines as a RL pawn shop

the items I was thinking of are things like clothes, shoes, hair (of course the transfer ones) skins if transfer, etc

no big items like houses or cars or land or anything like that

the vendor sounds like it would work nicely

movies? how does one buy a movie in SL, I thought movies were via streams.

:)

I love the idea! How much land do you need? If you don't have anywhere to set up shop, I can let you use one of my mainland parcels for a month to give it a go.

Rha I was just using that as example of idea I had when you brought up subject.
I guess you could do it for clothes at camping prices too but we both know how hard it is just to sell our own creations and you're stuff is very good.
Heck the things I spent months trying to figure out how to make well I can't even sell for 50 to 20L at Onrez.
If you want to do it for fun and sew what happens I sell you my creations maybe you will have better luck at reselling them.

Thanks for the offer, but I have land, at my store, I was thinking just building a small shop there to try it out, IF I do it

LOL! Sounds like a neat idea! Wish I'd thought of it!!

I thought you'd use a notecard as a ticket too.

If you build one- and want ideas - make it look like the old 'inner city' pawn shop. Ever see "The Blues Brothers" or, for a movie ABOUT a pawn shop, there was one back in 1979 with Dom Deluise, Suzanne Pleshette, and Jerry Reed called "Hot Stuff" where 3 cops run a stolen goods sting operation in a Pawn Shop. Funny movie too! :)

Its scary that I remember useless movie facts like this :)

no offence to you FD, but that is not what I am trying to do it
I do not want to purchase things that are made by the person selling it to me, that was why I said transfer no copy (that is the permissions that the item must have set to the person who wants to sell it to me)

I am not trying to resell other people's stuff, I am merely trying to think of something that will help others and create something different in SL at the same time, plus, hopefully, it will be gimicky enough that folks will come visit, then wander around and visit the rentals and my store as well.

I am not talking about paying camping prices.

for example, not set in stone, but just an idea (remember this is all just an idea at this point, like many of my ideas, it may never get off the ground)

I would first need to know where they bought it, and a lm to the item in question so I can go and research, basically find out the price of the item, then I would offer them say... 1/3rd of the retail price. If they agree to the sale, I would then hold it for a week and at the end of the week they could come and buy it back with a 10% (of the retail price) holding fee added on.
Or they can just outright sell it to me with no plans to return, whereas it immediately goes out for sale.
If they do not buy it back I set it out for sale to the general public at 1/2 the retail cost. That way if it sells I make a small profit off of it...
And remember, I would decide what I am willing to buy and not buy, so if I think something will not sell, I just won't buy it. I will not be a place for folks to make a quick buck on stuff they could not sell themselves. Mainly it is more for something different.

here would be the math for a 500L item...

I buy from the seller (after researching it) for 167L
they can then buy it back within a week for 217L
If they decide to not buy it I sell it for 250L
still less than the retail but I make back the money plus a profit

and of course anyone can come in with a wish list, of items they are looking for, and if by some chance I do get an item on someone's wish list, I would contact that person when the item goes up for sale.
(actually I like that structure, I think I will go with that, if I decide to do it)
anyone else who wants to try this out, feel free to use my ideas, structure etc :)

nope never seen that movie, and only ever been in one pawn shop in my life, and that was because my ex wanted to go see if they had specific games for nintendo 64 (that will give you an idea how long ago it was LOL)
but I can always research for how it will look :)

I have a standing order with a well established yard sale here that I buy every high quality couples dance ball set they get.

I would do the same with you. If you get couples dance balls from Bits and Bobs, Sexy Jesse, or Sine Wave, you have a customer in me. I will also buy used Intan Couple Dance Balls.

I'm sure there are other people who will buy different stuff, I think it will work.

And I will send you my vendor. :-)
