Back in the '70s the most common password was "susan". I have no idea why.

I read a report recently that said the most common passwords were:

password
12345

Don't use those. :)

12345 was good until "Spaceballs" gave it away.

This sort of thing wouldn't happen if the log-in username wasn't the avatar's first and last name.

Its a pain in the ass to keep all my passwords up to date but it is worth the effort to keep Lil outa my top secret underwear database.

I use Password Safe for the generation and storage of my passwords. What other programs are out there that ya all recommend?

My dog's poop. I've devised a secret code based on what he leaves in the yard each morning.

I work in computer systems and part of my job is to occasionally try to crack certain passwords at work to ensure that some critical passwords are not simple passwords.
Yes, that, and the well-known fact that you're EVIL! Now come over here and practice your evil arts on me!

Ava's definitely right that a common cause of problems is downloading software from unsafe sites. But I'm willing to bet that poor password choice and an attack from someone the OP knew ingame is a high likelihood in this case.

PS, make sure you write that down till you memorize it.........but by then it's time to create a new one. Passwords should be changed often........or, at least, occassionally.
Now, someone figure out my passwords. :)

If your password is so complicated you have to write it down next to your computer, doesn't that beat the purpose completely? There's an easier method.. choose some words, preferably not English, combine them in a string that isn't a legitimate dictionary word, mutate with numbers, capital letters and special characters. Create an inner sense to it so that you remember it, just make it long enough, that's pretty much it. Plus you can keep variating this master password by changing one word (and the permutations) in it indefinitely, and if you keep a logic to it, you'll remember them all.

Acerose Password Vault is old and kinda clumsy, but it's free and stores and creates your passwords for you.

I use Digital Persona,it is accessed by finger print and stores all the passwords,i click on the site i want to go on and it fills it in automatically without having to remember or type anything in,
The only problem with never having to fill in passwords is you forget them,so one needs to keep them written down in a safe place.
The SL website i can access that way but logging in with the viewer i have to type it it manually

Are you trying to say you have a problem IRL? It would be best to talk to someone about it.

Agreed, but I really do think Mellissa should check out everything very carefully, in case other information she has on her system has been stolen!

In view of that blog, AND in view of the fact that LL knew the OP's account had been hacked long before the OP knew about it, it doesn't sound like it's someone who the OP knows. It sounds more general than that.

Well, it seems more computers are hacked or compromised from software generated and distributed via the internet or some other network than someone digging through that junk drawer of your computer desk. Use of password lockers is fine I suppose.....my guess is the contents are encrypted and access is either password protected or some other form of security. So, now the hacker only needs to break one password the gain access to the contents where it can be uploaded back to his machine where he can run some crypto busting software across it.......and have all your passwords. Now I really don't think that's likely..........at least not for most people. But, writing that password down on a piece of paper, putting it out of sight in a releatively safe place and not stored on the computer that the password is used on seems so much simplier............and every bit as secure. All I have to worrying about is who's digging through my drawers (I know, I know.........LOL).
