Its been a few months since I have logged on, yesterday I decided too. My password was changed so I called Linden labs and they said my account was suspended because someone stole my password. Well I got that all figured out, got my password reset and I logged in. WOW! Disgusting pornographic pictures everywhere, i cant even see my Avatar. Nothing but those horrible pictures and some weird dark voice saying a chant over and over again. HELP! I don't want to lose that account, I already lost all of the L$ I had on their. :( What can I do? Thanks!

Open your inventory, search for ";(worn" (without the quotes) and take EVERYTHING off. Clear your cache (in Preferences, ctrl-p, under the Network tab), log out then log back in.

That should take care of the spamming. From there, it's just a matter of cleaning out all the stuff you don't care about in your inventory. There may be a ton of crap in there so just do a bit of cleaning every time you log in and have some time to spare - nothing to stress over, it's more important to spend your time enjoying your SL.

What a bummer.

How do these things happen?

I think the first thing to do is to "Ruth" your avatar. Get the Advance menu up (CTRL ALT D, I think) and go to Character\CharactrTests\Test Female.

This should set your avatar back to the default and you can start again and clean up. If you still can't see your avatar, then I should raise a support ticket.

Alternatively - if the reason you can't see your avatar is simply the amount of spam all over the screen, then go to Edit Preferences and reduce the number of text lines displayed to just 1 or 2 - so it's not rolling all up the screen.

Your next problem will be finding the object spamming you - it may be attached to your avatar or it may be an object rezd somewhere. If you can post some more details, I'm sure someone here will help you track it doen and mute and AR it.

Check your account transactions on the web site to see where the Linden Dollars went to - you may be able to raise a support ticket to get those sorted too, since LL know your password was stolen.

How do these things happen?
Usually because someone chose a really simple password and/or used an unsecure wireless connection to log in and/or does not have proper security on their own computer.

For most non-techie folks, they choose passwords that are way too simple and they do not realize what other people can discover via unsecured networks/access methods. With one piece of software I have, I could probably crack the majority of non-techie passwords in less than 15 min.
:(

And why would you have acquired such a piece of software? Huh?

I read a report recently that said the most common passwords were:

password
12345

Don't use those. :)

Sorry but I have to disagree here: Those are very rare and unusual, actually.

For SL - its more because people download and install applications from unknown or well protected sources on their systems that you actually cannot get in any real store in your city or trusted website (software like password cracking *lollol, brute force attack applications, faked SL viewers promoted on YouTube, infected xmas postcards with java scripts, etc, etc)

@ Melissa Pralou - again - nice story!

I work in computer systems and part of my job is to occasionally try to crack certain passwords at work to ensure that some critical passwords are not simple passwords.

LOL? You honestly think that it doesn't happen in many tech depts? You are somewhat clueless about the computer industry and how various tech depts work.

Well if you want to have a more secure xmas better do not follow the xmas cards that may lead you to any of those brand new viewers promoted on YouTube.

You can have a LOOK - of course. Do it now :)

@LittleMe - I do believe YOU (I just never thought of this) :)

I think the more common ones are secure because most of those developers are known by a lot of the SL development community.

Sure you do :D

(j/k)

Back when the internet hadn't taken off, I used to play a MUD called Shades. I wrote a programme to go through all the accounts trying various password. I got about a third of all the accounts, but I was only after Wizards and Witches (the top level). I got a few of those too :)

According to a password cracker that I ran against one application - the most common passwords used by cops: Harley1 and Adam12

Do as I do when creating a password. Look around you.....notes you've made, doodles you've drawn, that coupon you are thinking of clipping (or even thinking of throwing away). What pops in your mind when you look at that whatever it is......choose that as the middle part of your password. Then try to remember how many minutes it was since the last time you trotted off the the bathroom (or something similar....maybe raided the fridge for that leftover pork chop)......make that the first part of your password. Then look at the time of day, convert to military time, subtract today's date............make that your last part of you password. Toss in a random capital letter to the words, and shift for random numbers.

PS, make sure you write that down till you memorize it.........but by then it's time to create a new one. Passwords should be changed often........or, at least, occassionally.

Now, someone figure out my passwords. :)
