From: Jedi Quintessa let me finish this sentence for you
falling in love with an avatar is desperate and tragic Why? The only way to fall in love with an avatar is if it never says anything, as soon as it does, you're dealing with a human being, not a picture on a screen. Now the avatar, the way it looks, the image it projects, may be part of what you fall in love with, but you fall for the person as filtered through their chosen avatar.

Popped in late, and I see the OP question was edited out. So let me just say this: the real problems start if one falls in love with ones own avatar.

No, I would never fall in love with an AV or anyone I didn't actually know in RL. I personally do not believe cyber love is real love, it’s just make believe.

I cussed out my avatar once and she would not speak to me for 3 days. Finally I put a mullet hairdo on her and put her in a Camaro Z28 playing Lynard Skynard in an 8 track* and she broke down and and said "OK this is going too far!" We have had no problems since... *8-track - for the younger members, that was a type of tape that stored music. They sucked.

Oooh....Oooh...does this mean we can get all philosophical now? How do you "know" someone else? What is real? What is make believe? Do you exist, or are you simply a projection of my own existence? Wait....do *I* exist? No...I have ears, therefore I am! Yes, that's it! From: Bella Posaner I did say "I personally" so therefore that's my truth Oh goodie...we do get to play. Is truth subjective then? If I say "I personally believe the speed of light in a vacuum to not be constant", does that mean that it is true? But closer to topic, what does "actually know someone in RL" mean? Can you actually know someone else? Or is it possible that you can only think you know a person, until some other truth about them is revealed? We can, after all, only draw a picture of a person based on what they choose to show us. If they choose to conceal import things...our view is skewed, and we don't "really" know them at all! --your turn --

It's like asking for proof that you can trust someone. If you need proof there is no trust. If you do not have faith, there is no love. Once it becomes quantifiable it looses it's purpose. The only real and true love is love that doesn't care if it exists or not. If it must be proven then you have missed the meaning.

From: Jerboa Haystack If they choose to conceal import things...our view is skewed, and we don't "really" know them at all! --your turn -- I have always said that the deepest level of "knowing" someone is if you ever have to live with them for more than a few days. On the web - we create our own idea of who or what they are, and that "ideal" is never much different than the perfect avatars we see all over SL. This image is also based on what they tell us... RL friends - We get to know the good things about their personality and maybe some of their lifestyle. We also know what they really look like and smell like. Living with - THIS is when we get to see someone's bad habits. YOu then know the good and the bad and can make a REAL solid decision on if you truely like them or not... At this point, they can no longer hide if they are jobless and smell like B.O. and a brewery and empty the fridge as soon as it is full. I am every bit as guilty of this but here is the thing - if someone IS on SL every waking moment, what fun would it be to live with them? I mean at the RL wedding, would they have their laptop playing SL? Gotta think of these things...

From: Kaimi Kyomoon And if you fall in love in a forest and no one is there to hear it is there really a sound? Of course! For me...The beating of my heart vibrates in the misty stillness, it's energy carrying my love to the mighty (and now still standing) oak. It's core matches the beat of my own, until the whole forest is alive with the fullness of my heart's true desire. The cacophony rises, until on a wave of pure emotion it break free from the confines of leaf and limb, hurrying on it's way to the gentle ears of my beloved. (and since I said "For me..." it is my truth! )

Gotta think of these things... Totally agree with you, living with someone is the only way to get to truly know someone. My best friend of 12years and I, bought a house together, I thought I knew him, but there was a lot I didn't know until we lived together for a while.....we're still best friends

From: Chosen Few I'm pretty sure my avatar is in love with me. I can tell because she looks at me in that special way when I focus the camera on her, and because she's always happy to do whatever I ask of her, without hesitation (lag notwithstanding). She even manipulates objects many times her size without even breaking a sweat, and you know that's gotta be hard work. But she never ever complains. If something's important to me, she just takes care of it. Yup, she loves me. Mine always looks at me with a "what the f do you want now?" look on her face.
