The latest version of the script (which displays the profile pic of a nearby avatar for a length of time before changing to another) has an option where you can Touch the picture and choose from menus not to have your pic displayed.
I guess it depends whether the owner has used the latest version of the script.

Mmmmmm..
Maybe, just maybe... the vendor who sold you your skin sold more than one.., and the vendor who sold you your hair.. ditto.. and your clothes and your "unique" makeup.... and tattoo..and.... well you get the idea.
And maybe, just maybe.. more than one person decided to take their profile pic at Apollo..or some other generic SL "beauty spot".
You know.. I walked past someone in the street in RL yesterday and they were wearing my jeans.... I was flattered at first, and then angry about copyright theft.... but then I thought maybe Levi sold more than one pair in the same size as mine.....

From: Kitty Barnett LL has permission to use profile pictures however and wherever it wants, you don't. No? From: Terms of Service However, you must make certain representations and warranties, and provide certain license rights, forbearances and indemnification, to Linden Lab and to other users of Second Life. From: someone ...use, reproduce and distribute your Content within the Service as permitted by you through your interactions on the Service /me shrugs, it seems to me "other users" have a license if you've checked to share it in search, doesn't it? I mean, it is your choice to offer permission to show your pic in everyone's viewer and throughout the service isn't it? (Which I believe includes your profile window, friends online web page, new search, the browser window and the main in world window as well now...) But I don't pretend to understand it all, I just know when I pay them for my upload, they then own my pic and may use or delete it, LOL From: Lindal Kidd Gorgeous pic, Crystal. Aw... tyvm Lindal! A friend had asked for a custom pose, and when I looked over my shoulder...."snap!"

On my first encounter I to wondered how they got my profile picture, once it was explained my second though was "Ack! I have to change my hideous profile pic!" and struggled the remainder of the evening trying to get to change on the profile pic greeter. I was using a rather hideous pic from my newbie days at the time.

Ok, so I tried turning off "Show in Search" on my profile. Went to both places I had been to previously that showed my profile pic.
Didn't work...still showing up. Not that it's a major deal for me, but I would like the opportunity to turn that "feature" off.

I still don't get it. Your profile is an advertisement of "you" for people who would like to meet you. It's a social tool that let's you offer a first impression without having to repeat yourself in chat. Your profile pic is part of it. It's a fully and openly public picture of your choice with every intention to be displayed on anyone's screen come the chance they decide to meet you.
It's not your L$5000 shirt texture.
It's not your deepest darkest secret.
And, the script never really transfers the image itself to anyone's inventory. it just puts it on display a little differently than it would be when someone peeks at your profile.
And... To top it off... it IS easy to turn off... Profile >> 2nd life >> Texture >> Blank >> Select >> [X]... Done, mission accomplished.

From: Imnotgoing Sideways I still don't get it. Textures are textures, what is on that texture is completely irrelevant, they're copyrighted by default and unless you have permission or can defend fair use (which only a court can decide, but this instance fails 3 criteria in my opinion), you just can not use it. If someone paints RL, scans their work and uploads it for display at the hangout, then according to you it's perfectly fine for anyone to come along, grab the texture key and apply it to a prim to be used however they see fit without any permission because a) it's public and intended to "be displayed on anyone's screen", b) it's never in inventory, c) it's not for sale and d) if the creator didn't want it "stolen", they shouldn't have put it there. It's possible you feel that infringement is (or should be) allowed as long as it doesn't hurt anyone/for personal use which is a valid argument, but that still doesn't make it right "on paper".

I believe the database that search all uses is updated only once a day or so. You have to wait for changes to propagate. But folks, please think twice about removing yourselves from search just because you don't want the occasional profile grabber script to use your profile picture. You are making it a lot harder for people to find you. Especially for those of you who make and sell things, do you really want that? You're free to pull yourself out of search if you like, but just make sure you've thought through what that means. (I know you are still findable through the people tab but I don't know what is the proportion of users, especially new users, who only use new search.) For the record, I don't think it's right go copying people's profile pics and emblazoning them wherever you like, though I also don't really mind the occasional profile display gadget. (The first one I ever saw was shaped like a standing mirror and I thought it was actually very cool.) But I hate to see people pulling themselves out of search over this; it seems to me like blasting a waterbug with a cannon.

You are making it a lot harder for people to find you. Especially for those of you who make and sell things, do you really want that? *bump* Especially with a small/new store/place where you might be the only one with a(n) - up to date - profile pick to it. If the other "parcel not listed in search thread" is accurate, the new search doesn't always seem to pick up places from the region page alone so having it listed in search with a pick would be essential.

I'm not too bothered about the texture issue - I am bothered that to be findable in search your profile has to accessible globally via the web. To rephrase the above Your profile is an advertisement of "you" for people *in Secondlife* who would like to meet you *in Secondlife*. It's a *Secondlife* social tool that let's you offer a first impression without having to repeat yourself in chat. Your profile pic is part of it. It's a picture publicly availble *within Secondlife* of your choice with every intention to be displayed on the screen of *any registered secondlife user* come the chance they decide to meet you. So I have every sympathy with those who, whilst happy for the information to be available to any Secondlife user, do not want it fully available to everyone on the web, Secondlife user or not! The fact thar your profile has to be accessible to anyone on the web to be included in search, is (IMHO) a privacy issue that LL needs to address. I would actually urge people to opt out (boycot) using the new search for people's profiles until LL *do* address this issue. Matthew

Heh... My avatar name isn't tied to any of my RL information anywhere publicly, so, I don't really mind where it gets out... Nobody really knows me anywayz. Matthew, you're lucky enough to have an avatar name that gets buried in RL public figures when Google searched. My oddball name ATM gets 14 distinct hits that go straight back to my own little self... Including a transcript of Linden office hours that I sneaked into during my lunch break abusing my internets a bit. Boy, I'm begging for trouble on that one. (=_=) Why should I care? Second Life is a publicly available, free, global social environment. I can't come here to hide and I didn't plan to. Sure, my RL stays anon, but my activities inworld are all received, logged, and transmitted to people's computers around the world. Everyone I walk by inworld is receiving information about my avatar. That doesn't mean it's foil-hat time. I put my profile pic up to be "out there" whatever that may be. And the more "out there" it gets the happier I am. I don't gain or lose anything if it gets displayed other places. Heh... So far, one of the places it popped up on actually lost some customers... Their problem, not mine. (=_=) BTW.... Konnichiwa!!! (^_^)y

I've mentioned in my previous posts on this that it's not a major deal to me. I was a bit startled the first time I saw it and when someone mentioned it could be opted out of, decided to try it and see. Kind of like one can turn typing mod on or off on the Debug menu. Kitty has a good point about textures. I'm not knowledgeable in that field but her posts make sense to me. Madhu, good advice also. I'm still foggy about how all this search stuff works and how it interfaces with other search tools within SL and on the web. And while I may "choose" to be social when the mood strikes me...SL doesn't HAVE to be a social platform. There are several forum regulars who enjoy SL in all different ways than just social.
