I recently discovered that my in-world profile pic is all over SL. LOL

This happened because I had to submit a full perm profile shot for the magazine I write for which was no big deal. I later discovered my pic while wandering around.....in three different businesses, hanging as art. One was a club......the other two were shops and the pic just seemed to be used as decor. It was cool to see and my first reaction was flattery. They weren't selling the image...or claiming it to be their own...it was just decorative.

I later told a friend about it.....and she was livid.  She couldn't believe someone would give my pic away like that and she didn't understand why I wasn't upset. I just didn't see any reason to be upset. I take a LOT of pics in SL and I do a ot of paid work for folks....to me is was just kinda cool and flattering. Obviously a lot of people really liked the image. *shrug*

Would it offend or bother you??? and why or why not?

In the shops, was your pic on one of those boards which shows who the last visitors were? I've seen a lot of places doing that.

But, your pic as art? Flattering, but kinda surprising since it was without your knowledge!

I would love it... Free publicity and some new IMs that may lead to more friends. Though... Some people just may be disturbed by what they see. (=_=)

The first time I saw that was in a clothing store I was checking out for the first time. I looked around and WHOA!!! How did my profile pick wind up in this store that doesn't know me??? Freaked me out until I figured out what it was.

I saw it again in another store. This time the owner was there and I commented on my first experience. She said it generally garners a reaction. Then mentioned "You should see what some people have on their SL profile pic."

I'm not sure if I like this new gadget or not.

I stand around next to the picture of my glorious self, hoping someone will say, "Wow! Is that YOU?!"

So far, no luck. :(

Heh... The reaction I saw when my pic came up once (I was big at the time):::

"Random Nobody: WTF is a kid doing on the wall!"
"Random Nobody: Is that what they sell here!"
"Random Nobody: That is some sick s***!"

I walked up to her, said "Hi"... She said "Hi"... I don't think she ever bothered to check my profile. (^_^)y

If you don't like it, just AR it.

It's technically "stealing" (not accurate, but popular phrasing) texture UUIDs without having a license for those textures (you granted LL permission, but does not extend to random people however).

Milla - based upon what you described - I think there's a 99% chance that your employer didn't share your profile pic at all - and instead what you're seeing is a 'trick' of sorts using a combination of the LSL scripting language, and web profiles that are publically accessable.

Its just a novelty that shows the person's profile pic up on a prim when they come up within range. Have a friend (or an alt) visit the same place.... if their profile pic suddenly appears, then you're probably just looking at a novelty harmless 'gotcha' trick, rather than something truly to be concerned about :)

Wow....cool. LMAO

Ok...that must be what it was......never seen anything like that before. Freaked me out. I just thought it was odd since I had just given that pic to the magazine editer and one of the places I saw it hanging was a club owned by another artist that we featured in the magazine. :p Hehe...if it was one of those things you guys are desribing.....lol well now don't I feel silly. Blond Moment!!!! :D ;)

My brain is fried anyway.....I'm moving IRL....hitting the road tomorrow....needless to say the computeer will be the last thing I pack.... but I am up to my eyeballs in 'stuff' and I haven't even eaten yet today....6pm...maybe I should think about dinner. :p

For those interested - you can opt out of these pictures by unchecking the Show in Search option on your profile. That is what I did.

Your profile will still be findable by the People tab search if a person knows your name but you will not be searchable in the New Search tab.

I think I got this right - someone correct me if I am a little off here.

I've got a picture of my building as my profile pic. When I first saw one of these things at a competitors place, it took me a while to figure out what it was. I was wondering why he had an ad up for my place because I didn't remember setting one up.

Mmhmm, when you publicly post your profile pic on the web it can be displayed anywhere obviously. Someone put that script in a prim at an ice skating party last winter, and it would change to the nearest AV's profile pic who skated by! :)

If you don't want your pic public, erm, may I suggest not publicly listing it like Gabriele said? ;)

/me searches self... Here I am!

It's not showing the picture from the web site for one (the one on the site is resized and has "Second Life Search" stamped on it to keep it from being used to "steal" textures), it's grabbing the texture key of the *original* texture and applying that to the prim.

Just because something is public doesn't mean there are no copyright/permission concerns and as far as fair use goes it fails to use the image in a larger context, it uses the entire full resolution original, etc.

The only pro-argument you have for fair use is that there's no monetary loss, but if that's the guideline for copying content then it should be perfectly fine to copybot something that someone created and has out in "public" but that they don't intend to sell which is not something that would be condoned.

LL has permission to use profile pictures however and wherever it wants, you don't.
