Jimmy, there are a bazillion ladies looking for dates in SL. If they don't want to talk to you, re-examine how YOU are talking to THEM.

Hint: IMing someone and saying "how are you?" is a really lame opener. Witty and funny does the job. Fishing for a clue whether or not she's into poseballs on the first date isn't going to get you anywhere. Well, unless she's a guy, but I think that's a different thread.

:D

Or you could do what I did. My dasterdly plan of sitting, standing or otherwise looking forlornly around a room, and mostly being horrible at everything involving social situations was put in motion in March of 2007 in Second Life.

Since then my evil plan of world conquest has amounted to four dances, one of which as a cat.

Actually, I wish this was some social experiment, but no, in reality the "plan" was put in place sometime in 1985.

I am neither witty nor funny. Wow, actually IMing someone? I don't think I could do that.

Thank-you.

And what was that crime that has never been committed?

One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other,

One was blind and the other couldn't, see
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
A blind man went to see fair play,
A dumb man went to shout "hooray!"

A paralysed donkey passing by,
Kicked the blind man in the eye,
Knocked him through a nine inch wall,
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all,

A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And came to arrest the two dead boys,
If you don't believe this story’s true,
Ask the blind man he saw it too!

(It wouldn't all fit in my sig... :))

I like to eat them head first. The tail makes a convenient handle and the little skulls crunch amusingly in my mouth.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

happy valentines to all. i'm valentineless; does anyone have any ideas as to where to go tonight in sl to meet some decent people? i've noticed the guys on sl are usually jerks and will only talk to you if you are a woman, and the woman seem to always be after other women. thanx,

Jimmy

Jimmy, come visit my blues club tonight, if you like the blues. There are always lots of single women hanging out there, who are nice to everyone.

You can find the LM in my profile under picks :)

Actually, don't go directly to the IM at all unless you're somewhere very busy or the potential object of your affection is on another sim. EVERY male stranger who's ever IM'd me while standing a short distance away has subsequently propositioned me, so I don't react warmly to those out-of-the-blue IMs. I'm sure other women have had similar experiences, so I'd really suggest that the initial conversation at least takes place in chat...otherwise, she may wonder what it is you're about to say that you don't want other people to know about.

Now this could be an interesting turn in the thread .... how do you want to be aproached?

If I am standing alone next to the dance floor at Frank's, it's a pretrty safe bet that I want to be hit on :) Send me an IM. In any crowded place, IM's are what I want because things get lost in open chat too easily.

If I am sitting near a few other people, most likely I am in open chat talking with friends. Join us in chat first so I get to know you. If I am with other people I probably am NOT interested running off with you.

One thing I always hate. ALWAYS hate, is the IM's coming in as soon as I res in a sim with a dance club. It's like they are just camping the telehub and hitting on anyone that comes through.

But any time, use your head -- the one above your shoulders -- and have a least a little respect for your fellow humans.

This seems like the most reasonable approach. I'm terrible at approaching women I don't know - you all make me ridiculously nervous. (Stop laughing at me. I can't help it). I don't think I would intrude on someone's chat if they were there with friends, but if someone were standing alone by the dance floor at Frank's, I would probably be able to work up the courage and ask them to dance in IM. There's so much going on at a place like that that open chat doesn't seem to work well, and if it were real life, I would (never, ever be able to walk up and ask them to dance, but for the sake of argument...) walk up and quietly ask them, rather than shouting across the room. So IM is sort of the RL equivalent of approaching someone in RL. I guess.

That said, I feel like I know most of the women here who post regularly, so I would have no qualms asking you to dance. For some reason, getting shot down by a friend isn't as bad as getting shot down by a stranger. Go figure. I wonder WTF is wrong with me.

Yes, that is why I end up standing around, or sitting around looking stupid. I don't want to intrude or bother anyone.

I've never tried whisper or know how to make it work, but it apparently is only readable within 10 meters of someone. Anyone try using that for someone sitting in a corner at a busy dance place? Within 20m of the floor but, say, 11m away from it, so whisper would only go to them?

edit: what kind of slip would cause me to write "business dance place" instead of "busy dance place"?

Claire!! How did you *know* my card to Morgaine has got delayed?!?

I put a pair of heart shaped earrings in it too. She sent me bath oil. I hope she isn't saying what I think she's saying!!

And I'm with Trout on this .. if I'm going to try and chat up a pretty young lady, I'm not going to announce it to the world!

I would prefer an IM over chat for more personal conversations, but I find it easier to initiate a conversation if there are a group in chat. Though I do hate to interupt, so I don't do it often.

Yes, your chances of picking someone out of a group is pretty low. I have done it tho :) But I just joined the talk and made friends. It was several days later before I could catch her online and looking for something to do.

Patience is your friend in SL. So few people seem to have any.

Well, I'm a slow starter, in both RL and SL...I prefer someone who takes the 'friends first' approach. I mean, flirtation is fine, but if I feel like a guy's primary goal from moment one is to see whether my leopard spots go all the way down, I'm not going to participate. I want someone who takes the time to get to know the person behind the pixels to some extent, even if we end up being solely friends.

No guy who has ever IM'd me out of the blue was looking for a friend, or even a friend-with-potential. They all wanted to know about the spots (whether literally or figuratively), which is why that approach makes me uneasy.

I have never attempted to start anything to see if I could see if the spots go all the way down. Nor if the hair matched. Or . . whatever.

I am now afraid, though, to try IMing people.

Hard enough to get me to use chat :)

Yes, SL is a lot like RL. That is good and bad. I'm a tad shy in rl - so I am in sl too. In my earlier post I didn't mean to say that all the women in sl were lesbians. I meant that it seems many of the girls I've watched at various clubs seem to gravitate toward each other. They dance, flirt, chat up a storm with each other. Sometimes if you talk to them, they are very short and sometimes nasty. And I'm not the type to im and ask for sex, and I do have some class so it wasn't like I made an ass of myself and made them angry. And I stand by my word that most guys are jerks because they only want to talk with girls since they are looking for the next poseball. Anyways, thanks Claire, I'll see if I can find the hangout - and thanks Honey, i'll try to get to your blues joint soon.

In the conversations I've had with you, you seemed to do just fine. You were well spoken, on topic, and interesting. I bet you would do just fine if you just jumped into a conversation and relaxed a little.

So, Ann...about those spots... :p

Yes, I sounded exactly like the ghost of Hamlet's father. Wait, did he have lines? No matter, the point is that I do not actually ever recall seeing you in world Trout. :)
