WHat do you do FOR SL outside of SL?

Just a question that popped up.. essentially wondering what tools are out there for SL without being in SL

SO.. what do you use for anything that you use for SL outside of the client?

I use Photoshop for textures and mountain sculpts
I use Wings3d for better sculpts
I use Rokuro Pro for symmetrical sculpts
I use Sculptypaint to make sculpts more natural
I use LSL Editor to script when I can't enter SL
I use the LSL Wiki downloadable to help me not suck at scripting when my internet goes out (lol)
I use SLImageUpload for sculptmaps
I use the windows base command prompt to check my connection constantly to make sure I've just crashed and internet hasnt gone out (My net goes out alot, so I run a constant ping on a seperate monitor)
And..I think that's it...

What do you use?

I use Gimp and GraphicConverter for manipulating images when I'm making textures.

I use TextWrangler with a LSL language plugin for scripting.

I use Avimator and Qavimator for doing animations and poses.

I've downloaded an old horribly out of date mirror of an old LSL wiki as my primary local reference (because I like the format and it's so much faster than the current official lsl wiki).

And I've played around with Mono and LibSL to make a text-based SL client, to see how it worked and find out if it has any potential practical benefits.

photoshop
rokuro

um that's it as far as I can think LOL

I have a website that I made specifically for SL, but then decided to not do what the plan was

can you guess by the name of the site...

http://www.lindensforsale.com

hehe

site still up, but I do not sell lindens unless someone I feel I can trust is over their limit and wants me to do them a favor, but has to be someone I know... too chancy otherwise (I was selling awhile back but... got burned too many times)

I could write forever on this topic. Well, no, I couldn't, that's a patent exaggeration. But I could write for a considerable length of time, so I will just summarise for the moment:

* Qavimator for animations;
* Pixelmator and the GIMP for textures and image editing;
* Yojimbo for scrapbooking, research, project tracking and general note-taking;
* FreeMind for mind-mapping, ideas capture, project planning, anything I like really (I _love_ FreeMind);
* TaskPaper for task management and activity planning;
* iCal for date-and-time-based planning;
* BBEdit and lslint for offline LSL editing;
* Audacity, xACT and Quicktime Pro for sound editing and conversion;
* SnapzProX for recording video and taking precise screenshots including UI;
* ffmpeg and iMovie for editing video;
* Subversion and SCPlugin for version control;
* Twitter and NewsFire for keeping up on the latest developments.

I use, um..

Genetica, Apophysis, Texture Maker and Ultra Fractal to cheat around being lousy at art

Photoshop when there's no actual art involved

TortoiseSVN and Visual Studio for low-level playing with programs

Silo 2, um, not for anything yet but dang, it's too much fun not to be used

I use legos to simulate prims to see what a build would look like.

*giggle*

I use the GIMP ( too cheap to pay for photoshop) and sculptypaint.
I also hand-write flow charts for scripts. It helps me order my thoughts.

I use my camera to take a picture of my real world artwork (paintings, stained glass, etc.) and use a basic (and maybe the most basic) photo software to do a little cropping and the like and then upload to SL. So: 1) camera; 2) basic photo software (Paint).

3) I also take snapshots in SL, save them to my computer, use Paint to marginally adjust them (maybe going so far as to change the file to .jpg) and then uploading to Flickr; and
4) I've used Flickr, or a website I found in Flickr, to create a "magazine" cover which I then uploaded into SL to be used as my artwork book cover.

I am, sometimes, frankly shocked that I'm able to remember how to get into SL, though, as I am not the brightest bulb in the toolshed in terms of computer things.

Anims:
- Poser for complex anims (& some experimental poser->sculpt stuff)
- QAvimator for poses/simple anims

Texturing:
- Photoshop CS3 + Multiple plugins (Flaming pear etc.)
- Adobe Bridge for texture mgmt. (Tried a lot, still haven't found a great picture mgmt tool)
- Thumbplug tga (or something like it), to see tga in explorer

Sculpts:
- Maya for sculpts
- Polytrans for conversions / mesh optimization

Scripting:
- Ultraedit + languagefile sometimes
- scitez (experimentally)
- several LSL search plugins, but i should download the whole set
(Still usually use inworld editor, as I hate the copy/paste stuff, and in SL high up + fast gfx, works kind of ok on 24" screen)

Coding / Backend:
- Visual Studio (c++) for opensource client investigations
- Visual Studio (c#) win. backend dev.
- Eclipse (PHP/Java dev)
- Macromedia Dreamweaver (HTML design/PHP backend dev. (like the sync))
- MySQL db + admin tools (backend)
- Your usual coding tools. (beyond compare, editors, xml spy etc., wherever necessary)
- tortoiseSVN (source mgmt)

Audio / Samples:
- Goldwave for basic converstion & editing (small footprint, lots of options, good to run together with 200 other apps)
- Whatever i need for special stuff (text2voice, morphvox etc.)

Video:
- Fraps to record
- Windows Movie Maker for basic editing (usually enough for my purposes)

Prob. forgot a few.

Photoshop and Paint! for textures.
Flickr to show my SL photos
Rokuru and Torotoken for simple sculpts

I've tried and failed with:
Sculptypaint (freezes up on my comp)
OpenSim (won't download properly)

My RL 'agent' plays about with Blender but not in connection with SL thus far.

For textures...one word...GIMP. Got Poser and Avimator for poses/anims (If I can figure out how to use them properly....sigh)
Got Blender for prims and such(another one I'm still trying to figure out...)
Got Photoshop 5 and 6 for the stuff GIMP can't do.
Wouldn't mind getting Maya, but that will have to wait until I win an RL lottery.

I use photoshop. I read and post to many blogs and forums. I use Poser to create animations/poses. And I use my email to commuicate with the volumes of customer IMs I get in the course of a day while offline. That about sums it up.

Is it too meta to talk about the tools I used to develop a tool for other people to use with SL?
