Seeking a civil lawyer in the US ASAP

For reasons I prefer not to mention, but should be obvious, I need to speak with a civil attorney, preferably with experience or specialty in defamation cases.

Already looking into Har's suggestion, and errUh, I do hope you're being sincere. What I'm going through at this point is clearly no laughing matter.

This is not a good way to find a lawyer. Try whatever network you have in RL and get a referral to a decent civil lawyer. Defamation is almost never an area where lawyers will specialize, since there usually isn't enough of it, and the cases don't pay well enough, to make a decent living. A good general practice civil lawyer will be able to help or refer you to someone who can.

What's going on? Is this the Friday thread or is there a legit problem? I've been MIA for a little while and I'm not up to speed yet this morning.

I don't think the eye-roll was laughing at whatever issue you're having, it was that you'd try to find a lawyer here in these forums. You'd be far better off looking for one in RL...

What exactly was the issue? Did someone reveal your RL name? Steal your account and post mean things about bunnies?

I'm not a lawyer OR a bus driver, but it seems to me there's a basic problem...

You can't "defame" somebody unless you use their real name. Avatar names and aliases don't count.

Certainly, someone could say vile things about "Lindal Kidd" and my AVATAR'S reputation could be affected...but does RL law apply to SL avatars? I think that there's a strong argument that it does not, and that the ToS and Community Standards are the only "law" in SL. In which case, things like slander, libel, and defamation become a "dispute between residents".

We all know what LL does about those. Nothing.

Or, possibly, I might make a case that the damage to my in-world reputation is so bad that it's affected my SL experience. I might write the best AR ever submitted, and get LL to take action. Again, a real life lawyer would be little or no help because the body of legal precedents, which is what lawyers and judges rely on, doesn't apply in-world.

But let's say that I succeed, with or without a lawyer. LL takes my side, agrees that I've been harmed, and takes action against my enemy. What action? Likely they get a warning. Maybe a three day suspension. At absolute worst, they'd be banned from SL and have to create a new avatar to come back. But, restitution? Public apology? It'll never happen.

Mute your opponent, ban him from your lands, publish your own expose of his nefarious deeds, AR him to the Authorities. But don't expect much from the latter.

Or, if Tiberious' complaint is about some RL action, then he should do as many others have suggested, and use the Yellow Pages instead of this forum to find his lawyer.

Seriously, can someone tell me what the deal is? Tiberious said that it sould be apparent, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what happened.

Based on profile text, I'd guess it has to do with the SkyNews thing but have no idea what could be the connection (especially requiring a US lawyer). I'll certainly agree that the forums are hardly the place to go lawyer-hunting. And I hope no actual bunnies were harmed.

I don't think this is an unreasonable place to look or ask. Out of the thousands of players, there must be some lawyers?? or someone that knows or lives or works with someone suitable. On top of that, someone else here (as already stated) might be trying the same thing (whatever it is) and have a recomendation.
