Does the name of an avatar influence you at all?

when you are shopping, and you see the creators name, if it is a rude or vulgar type name, or a name that seems to be rather like the old aol names (like John123456) or if it screams alt (whatever that means)

do you tend to pass on by and not shop there?

If someone had a name like Fooku Beebe (this name does not exist I just made it up) would you buy from them?

just curious as to how much pull and influence our avatar names have

Actually I look at the item and the construction of the item. Most of the time I don't even look at the creator's name unless I am interested in seeing more of their work.

No, it doesn't matter to me. Generally I have seen that people with the John561561456 names seem to be dealing with biz in a box type stuff.

That is my experience though, your mileage may vary. :)

Name doesn't matter to me at all when shopping.

When meeting people though, I generally take caution with people with a string of nonsensical numbers after their name.

I don't usually pay attention to the seller's name. If I like something enough, it doesn't matter to me. But then again, if I saw something totally weird and nasty, I might just have a laugh. But it wouldn't stop me from purchasing.

No. Not at all. I rarely see the creator's name when I go buy something at a store in SL. I don't go out of my way to find it either. When I shop at slex or onrez I can see the creator's name easily but I don't look at it in any discriminating way. It's a complete non-issue for me.

I've never bought anything from anyone with an AOL name, but I would if I found one who made stuff I liked.

Also, I will not patronize the stores of anyone with "poop," "fart," etc. in their name. Again, perhaps they make awesome stuff I'd buy if I saw it- but I won't intentionally go there to find out.

<--- (^_^)

I've never paid attention to the maker's name when buying something. But, if I see something I like that someone else has, I'll inspect it and track the maker down. (^_^)

For chat? If they're nice, I'm nice. If they're rude.... I eat the rude... Free Range Rude, I call them. (=_=)

Not as such.

But I've noticed that people with names like 'hackerZ1010100" tend to make griefer tools, if they make anything...and those aren't products I'm interested in.

As far as talking with them...yes, names make a first impression (either good or bad) with me. I have a pretty good notion just what "BigDickMarvin" is going to say to me before his typing animation even starts.

/me spews a glass of water on the monitor (which is way easier to clean than Pepsi :p)

Good one Lindal and so true.

In purchasing items, unless it's a big-name merchant or I need to contact the designer if there is a problem later, I rarely look at the designer name.

However, no matter what the name, I won't purchase something in a shop if they sell other items I personally have a strong feeling against. One poster mentioned griefing tools, for some one else, it might be religious artifacts, or BDSM toys - depends on what an individual has an antipathy towards.

Somehow no BigDickMarvin ever speaks to me. Had some weird nicks in my store though, mostly girls. Well, the AVs were female. The nicks were a bit too obvious though.
Most things I buy are tools, and I dont care about the creators name. For clothes I even shopped at some Oryx person ;)

I think it works the opposite. People with really good items for sale tend to have convincing or interesting names as well.

But I'll tell you, I have had the name of some businesses turn me off more so than the creator's name.

Quality is quailty, no matter who makes it. I'm actually turned off more by shoddy vendors and displays than I would be by some creators name.

It is human nature. We are reactionary to the words we read before thought of the content kick in. You ca rationalize it after the fact, but having a vulgar or odd name will hurt sales in the end. That is my belief.

What they said, mostly. If a see a name of creator or store that annoys me first, I might think twice about shopping there. Much the same as if the outside of a store is a shoddy build. If I was going there anyway, it wouldn't matter, but it's not likely I drop in if I spotted it passing by.

It's more likely to affect my opinion if I meet someone. Anyone whose first name is Master/Mistress/Sir/Lord/slave/slut will have an uphill struggle impressing me unless it's done to humorous effect.

Slight derailment... I sometimes live role-play (swords & sorcery type) and am involved in running a local group. We had a load of new folks starting and I was running them through character creation. I always take a real name as well as character name so we can track characters. I had this conversation with a teenage guy...

Me: Okay, first off what's your name?
Teen: Merlin
Me: Umm, no... not your character name, your real name.
Teen: That *is* my real name
Me: (embarrassed but impressed) Wow... cool

His middle name turned out to be Arthur.

My home, most of my possessions and a lot of my clothes were created by Conifer Dada. That reminds me of me. So my experience of other creator names is limited so I don't know how I's react to a nice product made by someone called Ripoffscam.

Some people may use alts to make creations. Having said that, no, I don't normally look at the creator's name when shopping around.

The name of the creator of something doesn't keep me from buying it, but the type of items they sell *does.* As Czari said, if, for instance, I see something in a blog that interests me and I TP to the store that sells it, if they're also selling BDSM goods or have collars, gags, etc., on the wall, I immediately TP out, and don't buy anything there. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, sure, but I don't have to support it.

I think that a lot of people don't give any thought at all to their name, or, okay, they *do,* and make up some stupid name, then later decide they want to be in business or whatever. I always wonder if they regret the name and would do it differently in hindsight.

I read an article the other day about a fashion show or something, and one of the organizers was named something like Bendheroverand Slammer. Oh please. Like I could take someone like that seriously. It would seem apparent that if someone chooses a name like that, it's indicative of their mindset and/or personality, and I would stay FAR away.
