From: Almadi Masala LL needs to get a clue. They have sold their service to more users than they can handle. They need to either increase capacity to deal with the load, or reduce load to fit their capacity. The latter could be accomplished by banning bots and free alt accounts. Closing the doors on paying customers on a frequent basis is not an acceptable business model. You're not thinking Lindenly! They're more likely to increase fees for their paying customers to try and reduce load that way. There's a precedent for this!

Closing the doors on paying customers on a frequent basis is not an acceptable business model. I've heard this often and it would be great to clear this up once and for all -- most alts are paying customers too. I don't know where people get the idea there are so many freeloaders. Sure you could log in and spend no money with LL, but it would get old very quickly without sinking some real life cash into buying L$. Maybe a few - a very few - can earn enough in SL not to have to buy any, but these content creators are what makes the rest of us sink cash into it. I am premium and own a mainland parcel. My alt is a free account but when used he sinks as many US dollars into the company as I do. The fee for being premium is a drop in the bucket compared to what my alt spends. Besides, how could alts put extra strain on the servers unless you're logging them in simultaneously as bots. In that case I would call them bots and not alts.

Try logging in again people.
I couldn't get on either but just managed to get back on now, seems to be a bit more stable (although I haven't actually tp'ed yet to be fair, just set home destination to where I wanted as I signed in)
Same old sundays eh, some things never change....

Well, let's see:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [UPDATED]Logins have been disabled Sunday, January 04, 2009 1:13 PM
[12:13 PST] Logins have temporarily been disabled. We will update you again when problems have been resolved. [12:21 PST] Logins have now been re-enabled. [12:40 PST] Logins have been re-enabled with inworld services slowly coming back online. Please refrain from transactions until we have given an all-clear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, they give the all clear and things start recovering, load increases again and they have to disable logins again - just like the good ole days.
Besides, how could alts put extra strain on the servers unless you're logging them in simultaneously as bots. In that case I would call them bots and not alts. OK, I stand corrected. It is the armies of bots that are the problem. But having a nominal fee for non-premium accounts (maybe a 10 dollar one-time charge to set up the account) would perhaps inhibit the unrestrained creation of bots without imposing too much additional cost on non-premium users.
From: Almadi Masala OK, I stand corrected. It is the armies of bots that are the problem. I disagree. My bots haven't had any problems at all. They were logged in all the way through it, and they still are.
From: Phil Deakins I disagree. My bots haven't had any problems at all. They were logged in all the way through it, and they still are. meanwhile real live paying premium customers can not log in because their spot is taken up by a bot don't get me wrong, I do not mind some forms of bots, however I am against bots that just sit there to up traffic count if LL would remove the traffic metrics we would see a very big (in my opinion) change with logins and total online, as there would be no need for traffic bots anymore... *shrug* oh well, I choose to pay, can not blame anyone but myself (meanwhile because I was unable to do much of anything, even after I logged in, I am unable to complete a customer order that came in, which would end up being my only sale for the day) so not only does it not let me in, it also affects sales... (at least that is my opinion)
