The forums used to be opened to everyone. It was only closed later to NPIOFs. No major catastrophies happened then. Yeah, some bad elements will come in.. some will abuse alts to win arguments, etc etc but all in all it is a good move. AR and Ignore buttons will always be around.

What if a new user has questions about how to enter payment info? I wish they had done this a couple months ago. AFTER entering my info I found lots of great info in the forums about how to use prepaid cards. Whoopsies...too late.

Have no fear chief... I'm on the case!
(actually my SL join date is 3/14/2008... so I guess that date over there is a bit fuzzy.)

For a really explosive example of alt abuse in the forums, go down to the archived section of the forums and look for General Discussions. It got so bad that even the Linden/Res mods finally got drowned under the amount of stupidity that flowed ever onward.

From: Brenda Connolly It's about time. That was an asinine policy. I for one welcome our new NPF Overlords. There is somebody on Slashdot who says that all the time....

From: DaQbet Kish Can anyone say Forum Bots! What exactly would a Forum Bot do, and how would that be worse than what we already have going on in the forums now? .

I don't really see any reason why nopay's shouldn't be allowed on the forum - a forum by definition is a place for open (and theoretically structured) conversation. How is the value of the opinion of a nopay any different from the value of the opinion of a premium member?
It all smacks of elitism and I for one welcome the newcomers to the forum.
I do agree however tht the forums should be more formally moderated.
