It is very much like conference IMing. The difference is that you don't know who's out there unless they type something.

Group members can ignore group chat, and even turn it off. Some people do find it irritating - I love it and leave it on all the time, although I have left groups (shopping groups) that were way too chatty.

When you're not online, group chat doesn't get saved or forwarded to your email.

There's actually a little button on the right side of the group conference window and if you click it, a little sub-window opens up and it shows you everyone that is in the conference. As people close the window their names disappear from the list.
The thing about group conference is, once you close out the window you will not receive any more group IMs until you log out and back in. That's nice if you are in the middle of something and don't want to be bothered. However... you never know when you might miss something good. :p If you have already closed the group conference window you can reopen it without relogging by highlighting the group in your contacts list and then click IM/Call. It will reopen the IM window and you can then start receiving the group IMs again.

Thanks, Phil. That's given me a boost. To be honest, I was wondering if I was posting too much, and it might get on people's nerves. But I'm having a lot of fun posting here, that's for sure!

Ha! If anyone in the group of 'regulars' makes that accusation, just quietly mutter, "pot/kettle," and continue merrily on. ;p

Thanks for the tip. I'm finding all these very useful.

This might be useful for those who are having difficulty getting to NCI classes. Protomas Ludwig make her class notes available on her website, here:

I don't get what group chat is. Is it people sending messages to the group, and everyone in it gets to read those messages? Is it sort-of conference IMing?

I'm a bit wary of groups, because of getting IMed whenever I log on, but I will look for the Hangout in a few minutes. Thank you for the suggestion.

I start to wonder if you confuse group chat with a personal IM? Since you say earlier that you are always IM'ed when you log in. Anyone can ask in group chat if they have a question, and it is not aimed to you personally.

No; I know the difference. Honest. Those messages of my first couple of weeks were addressed to me by name (Hi, Kay. Watcha doin'? etc.). I have recently joined a number of useful groups with a bit of group chatter (which can be hilarious). I really do know the difference.

Anyway, joining those groups proved me wrong. I haven't been bothered at all. Sometimes it is really nice to proved wrong :)
