Group Chat totally down now?

Every time I try to open a group chat right now, it fails. Not the notice like we have been seeing, mind you -- but the member list in the chat is empty, and any text entered just fanished silently.

This happening to anyone else tonight?

most of the time, group chat does not work for me, especially the past 3 days.

Me too. But, tonight, all but one group died. And, attempting to post in a group causes my chat lines to fizzle into thin air. (>_<;)

It's a new low for group chat tonight. We don't even get that distinctive *ding* anymore. (>_<;)

And here's the grid status notice for this evening...

http://status.secondlifegrid.net/2009/07/07/post685/

Group Chat Issues
We are aware that certain residents and groups may be experiencing silent failures of chat (no error message is given of the failure). We are looking into this problem.

Do those release notes mention group chat?

I am glad to see that ding gone, hopefully it stays that way. Someone is always sending a chat, the group chat fails, then that dialog comes up and does not let me continue what I am doing until I dismiss it.

I have noticed some chats working lately that always failed (and other chats breaking that usually work). Usually the discussion is not on-topic and 'huh? this is working?' Then when I go to post my relief that it is working this time my line errors out.

My hope is that the group chat fix is more of an infrastructure update that comes along with the rolling restarts. I'm not sure how much of the sim server code is actually involved in group chat data management. So, that may be why it's missing from the release notes. Just like the asset cluster. It's not always the sims that manage data in SL. There are other server clusters involved, as far as I know. So, based on the blog post and the release notes as they are... I'll stay optimistic. Though it'd sure be nice to get group chat working again, at this point I'd settle for just regular old chat to be working reliably.

The frequent sim stalls and subsequent delay or even loss of regular chat when people TP into a region is really starting to bug me.

LOL! I jest got this notecard:

"ATTENTION: I just spoke via live chat to a LL CS who says there are NO PROBLEMS with group chat if you are experiencing ANY difficulty, it is just you and a VERY small minority, so LL needs EVERYONE with group chat issues to submit a support ticket so the engineers can find and fix. Nothing will be done without those tickets as the engineers maintain there is nothing wrong. I was told this expressly and repeatedly via life chat less than ten minutes ago."

I think a lot of this has to do with Mono script rezzing. I don't remember the Jira, but, when an object is rezzed in a sim with Mono compiled scripts running it really eats into the FPS/TD of the server. Considering all the Mono complied AOs and HUDs people are wearing, teleport load is impacting the sims hugely now. So, these stalls as I see them are part of this recent source of sim lag. (>_<;)

Yesterday....the spammers advertising their new stores in my store group chat, got through just fine. I couldn't respond to my own group. Imagine that.

The eject button still works fine.

Mono scripts may make it worse but I've seen it reproduced on an empty region by somebody who had very few scripts - just an old hugger and an old zhao - and not really that heavily loaded, prim-wise. In a high-traffic, high-turnover place, it's really quite painful.

Also, mono has been out for like a year now and this problem is really only a couple/few months old.

Clarification ... I got it in a group notice at 8:45. The properties do not list creation datet since it was not there when I logged in after waking up I would say that is about the creation date.

I helped a friend with some experimentation on this. Removing all other HUDs and attachments, we recompiled some choice attachments using both LSL and Mono, and then walket repeatedly across a sim border, checking how long time it took before you regained control of your avatar. The difference was huge.

Minor attachment for me: LSL 6-8 s, Mono 11-14 s.
Minor attachment for my friend : LSL 2 s, Mono 7s.
Major set of attachments for me: LSL 9s, Mono 30 s.

Anybody who can give a pointer to that Jira?

Another good test is to fly in circles - just fly and hold down the left and up keys - and have a friend walk or TP into the region.

Depending on how script/prim heavy your friend is, the sim will stall and you will start flying straight as the viewer stops receiving updates from the sim. Once the sim wakes back up, you'll snap back to flying in circles.

Again, this may be made worse by mono but it will still happen without mono-compiled scripts or even if you just have a fair number of unscripted prims on..

..any Adult content, activity, or communication, that falls under our Adult Maturity Definition must be on regions designated as 'Adult,' and will be filtered from non-verified accounts...
If it is true that group chat is broken because LL is attempting to filter all chat spoken by "adult" level avatars or locations from being seen by "unverified" avatars, I have to say that filtering seems to me a completely wasteful implementation. Particularly since the chat servers were stressed BEFORE filtering was even a twinkle in some rabid product manager's eye.

Why not have groups themselves 'rated', not let unverified avatars join Adult groups, and rely on residents to AR any chat that is inappropriate to a group's rating?

We rely on ARs to keep local chat in a PG sim from having obscene content, no?

grrrrrr......
