Hi,

Most people in SL a wearing an avatar scanner, so they can see which people are on the same sim as they are. Does someone know how you can be invisible for these scanners?

Not a clue... but what have you got to hide?

Nothing to hide, but sometimes you want to be alone for a while.

Hi Angela,

If you are talking about scanners such as built into the Mystitool, their normal scan range is 96 m. I don't think you can make yourself "invisible" for those.
If you keep your minimap up you don't even need a scanner to see whether there's anyone in the same sim, although this would not allow you to see who those people are of course.
In short, my guess would be invisibility is not going to happen.

All the same, happy shopping :)

You wouldn't be invisible as much as you'd just be out of scanning range for the people around you so it's of limited use and it should be quite clumsy to use since you're actually moving on a parcel that's 100m away from where your avie is visually.

The range on scanners can be increased or decreased just by changing a number in the script.

They still won't go beyond a 96m sphere around the prim the script is in (unless you count the occasional glitch).

I have a freebie one that I've had work consistently upto 230m.

It is possible to purchase a more sophisticated scanner that can scan a full sim and far beyond the 96m limit of the more typical and simpler scanners. But they're not very reliable because their remote sensors need surrounding land with access permission.

So there!. :p

How does that work then? I assume it must call on the information directly from the sim's server, rather than scanning in-world, so to speak?

Is that one scripted object, or a network of scripted objects?

I didn't write the script, so I have no idea. All I know is that there is a variable in the script called "scan_range" which I changed to 230 and it worked.

There's a few ways of doing it. But the most obvious is to have a single wearable object that rezzes temp on rez remote sensors that then fly out in different directions and shout back the necessary info.

Does it work at ranges over 96m over a sim border?

Thanks 2k; that makes sense.

Is that the type you have Conan?

This can be done by making the sensors physical and shooting them out in a radial pattern.

Nope. It's just pair of sunglasses that I wear.

I can see how networked scripts like the ones you have mentioned can do this, but I didn't think it possible for one script to have a range higher than 96m.

That's interesting. I really am going to have to find some time to learn scripting!

You're right, it's not possible. Maybe Conan's glasses have a remote sensor in the contents folder. But really, I suspect he's just being an incredibly contrary (and yet lovable) ass. ;)

And people complain about lag in SL

If these scanner scripts are running constantly to scan for avatars, what do think that does to the sim performance?

and lets not talk about these new ones that send out probes to other sims (if this is true), these probes are taking up bandwidth between sim computers just to send data back to the owner.

yay!!!

We already know that pose balls that listen on the 0 channel are bad for performance...imagine.

Then again, I don't need to tell you "informed" ones about this...you already know.

Angela

I know Lindens can make themselves invisible to scanners, so there are at least one group that has figured out how to get themselves invisible on scanners.

And in this picture, you can see a Linden "turning off" the radar:

I was standing in range, but radar says "Nothing detected".

Most scanners will not work "Reliably" at distances over 96 M, but even those will frequently detect avatars at far greater ranges. The "Guardian" I use frequently detects avatars over 300 M away and over sim edges.

/me giggles, tongue in cheek, but most scanners only give 16 results, so to hide, do as herd animals do and hide in among 16 alts or a herd of bots? ;)

I easily spotted a Linden at Burning Life due to their being on the minimap but not radar, nothing like that as an attention getter, ironic! :)
