You have a couple of routes to submit comments on Windlight.
1. Post your findings and opinions in the First Look forum. 2. if you have a specific bug or feature request, submit it as a JIRA issue. (and vote on the existing JIRA issues that are important to you!) _____________________

...what's it ruined? Until they come up with a new prim effect, it will make all non-Linden water look completely unlike the "new and improved Linden Water". Prim lakes and river that once were a fairly close match for Linden Water will look like a painted slab of plastic beside the new rippling, reflecting water. _____________________

...what's it ruined? For many: Performance. There are also issues with the lighting. |

The appearance of most high-quality skins, for one thing. Windlight throws it's own heavy-handed shadows on all avatars, and on top of the hand-painted shading that is in most high-quality skins, the skins look like crap. Why shade skins in a world with light? Never understood that personally.. but I use Windlight, max settings, and so far absolutely noone has looked worse than normal.. in fact most people look better. It's still got the slight problem at some lighting settings that cause the avatar mesh to look too bumpy on cheeks, but thats normal... Until they come up with a new prim effect, it will make all non-Linden water look completely unlike the "new and improved Linden Water". Prim lakes and river that once were a fairly close match for Linden Water will look like a painted slab of plastic beside the new rippling, reflecting water. A method has been posted for making water look like linden water.... Also, who's to say what problems there are so far that aren't in the normal client won't be fixed? You have to remember that Windlight has not been fully released, so they're still developing it. _____________________

For many: Performance. There are also issues with the lighting. yeah..that one currently kinda true lol..forgot.. bug reports ^^ So far though if it hasn't ruined performance (bug-wise), then it seems better. Lot's of things have been fixed, framerate SHOULD be better even on older machines... Windlight should technically run better than the old client on just about every machine. _____________________

However this has nothing to do with the point I made. My point was they bought Wind Light, we are getting Wind Light. *IF* it ruins things it doesn't matter, were still getting it. If they fix it so it doesn't ruin things, were also still getting it. |

Weve got some time here... and complianing is running its course.. but it feels damn good doesnt it? Um... are you implying that windlight is the cause for your log in failure? It's likely not. Me, I'm pointing to the DNS updating last weekend for all these DNS issues. ![]() Mari _____________________

Before Windlight, to get a good-looking skin, you had to paint on your own shading, or you looked like a plastic blow-up 'party doll'.
After Windlight becomes the normal client, all high-end skin designers that used that technique will have to re-work their designs to eliminate that shading, and all their customers will need to buy new skins that are 'Windlight-friendly'. The old ones that looked great before will be fodder for the trash cans. The Lindens say they are working on a way to allow prim water to look like the new Windlight water. I asked specificly about that at one of their "Office Hours" meetings recently. But until they do, no currently available effect comes close to what the Windlight water looks like. And no prim-based effect will degrade in exactly the same way for people who have video cards that aren't fully up to speed for Windlight, or who have their graphics prefs turned down to get a normal frame rate. _____________________

Go take a look in the gallery.... all of the 'Windlight Frist Look' thread's images looka wesome.. the whol image, not just the sky. When they first came out with Windlight I could run it on my machine. Now it won't give me the option so maybe it's changed. Last time I ran it, when you were at altitude (flying, in a skybox, ...), it looked great above the horizon line. Below that hasn't changed. IMO, it actually looks worse since it's such a stark contrast in quality (photo realistic above, flat ugly color below). I certainly haven't looked at all the images. The ones I've seen, though, were all at ground level and did look good to me. Others complain about shadows/shading it creates. --Hugsy _____________________

The old ones that looked great before will be fodder for the trash cans.So..the problem is just better graphics in general in this case? I don't see why that would be a problem honestly, seems like it would be easier to make skins since you don't have to do some heavy shading. Also... this should have been seen beforehand, considering that if we *ever* got better lighting, tis would be a problem... I have a high quality skin (Not photorealistic.. don't want that) which has some shading on it, not shadows, but highlights.. it still looks wonderful in Windlight, as does my other high quality skin without any highlights or anything _____________________

All of it looks stunning in my opinion. And if done properly you get the sky looking beautiful and working with the scene. Some skies just don't work for all situations... _____________________

Some of us occasionally remind people to use meaningful thread titles because it makes forum browsing easier for others, helps connect the OP with people who can answer their question, and increases the likelihood that someone else with the same question will find the thread. |

The plain sky matches better to below the horizon. --Hugsy _____________________

If you want something to look good... it has to look good, if that makes sense. _____________________

It still looks like that in the new Windlight. I purposely didn't take any pictures that would show it, though.
Look at more than the skybox - look at what is below the "horizon line" Still that way from the bottom of the Skybox down to the ground. At least that is what I see when I use Windlight. _____________________

ENDS .. at the horizon. Dont look at the sky box look at where the sky meets the horizon. |
