From: SuezanneC Baskerville Note that a surface scan to check for bad sectors might take a good while if you have a big hard drive. Also you might try running it with cover removed so that you can physically see whether the fans are spinning properly while operating. Just looking, no touching anything while it's operating. While it's not plugged in, the fans should spin if you blow on them. If you give them a gentle push they should continue to spin a bit. The normal thing to do for dust removal is to get a can of compressed air and use that overall and specifically on the fans. Radio Shack and Office Depot both carry them. There's are memory tests that might be worth running. Here's a link to an article with some offerings: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/memorytest.htmHhahah..yea..last night I tried everything I knew to do..even took my pc apart and vacuumed all the dust...I thought it might be overheating..my temp gauges on the front of my tower are normal tho..and fan speed is right...sighs..I really dont know!

I have had simular problems. Once it was a conflict with my security program. So have your recently changed security programs?
Once it was a router problem. I am not a real technical person. My RL fixed the router conflict, but maybe someone here can tell you what to look for.

I've experienced the constant freezes in Snowglobe, newest Kirsten Viewer and then, after upgrading, newest Emerald Viewer. So far *knocks on wood* the Release Candidate remains unaffected. But yes, the newest versions seem to share this problem - and I dread the next upgrade. So no, it is not only you. And I do hope they change whatever it is causing this, because this really makes SL unplayable.

Yes, I tried the old release SL viewer..uninstalled and reinstalled the new one...tried Emerald and Snowglobe..every viewer all the same..with Emerald, Im actually able to stay in world for about 5 mins before my pc locks up...the other viewers its pretty much as soon as I start rezzing..or when someone IMs me, whichever is first..I get an IM..and my pc locks up...or I try to move...I mean WTF!

Another thing to try is to unplug the computer, open box, physically remove the video card from its slot, then put it back in, then put it back together and try again.

The specs say that card uses a PCI slot - not a PCI-E, a PCI. Are you sure that's what you want or need?

Yummy - I think this was mentioned earlier but I just wanted to reiterate. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and sort on "User Name" services. You probably have a lot of crap running there. I have to shut down Core.exe, Teatimer.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, etc etc before SL runs well for me. You should be able to shut down nearly everything listed as an "owner" program, with possibly the exception of taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. I know some folks shut those down as well. All those little files like ctfmon.exe, jusched.exe, ehmas.exe, etc can be shut down. I wouldn't shut down any rundll32.exe files, just in case, though if you have more than one rundll32.exe, you could possibly have a virus. This really helps me; otherwise, I do the same thing; everything totally freezes.

yummy's problem
09-25-2009 13:03
I asked my geeky buddy about this a while ago, coz i was suffering the same problem, albeit not immediately on logging in like yummy is - I quote his schpiel and I apologise to the more technically aware here, who know better than me........if useful to yummy, if she can get logged in, then all good!
Pressing Ctrl-Shift-1 in-world will give you a status bar with all kinds of specs, with information might help you to see exactly what is causing the problem. There are two primary reasons that Windows based computers freeze up - either your registry has become corrupt or your virtual memory is overloaded. The result is that your system is running in circles with its internal processing and eventually, it hits a dead end and doesn't know where to go or what information to process so it just stops - and freezes up.
To stop your computer from freezing up, you will want to address two separate issues. First, you will want to try and determine which programs are competing with SL for all of your available processing power. You can do this by using the CONTROL+ALT+DELETE keys which will open the Windows task manager. Click on the tab that says PROCESSES and you will be able to see all of the programs that are using available resources. In many cases, programs that are malfunctioning can use large amounts of processing power and they are likely your culprit.
Diagnostic programs like Registry Patrol and XP Medic are both free to install and operate and may solve many of the freezing up problems computers experience.
