(preface: Friday thread on a Thurs. FTW)
My question is simple, do you think public sex is faux pas for any reason? (i'm speaking in general- not specific types/flavors/genders etc) Cybersex very well may not be your thing and you may have no 'issue' regarding others having it, so I'm looking for those who will admit to finding it distasteful for everyone, not just themselves and who look down upon it, in a "I think it's tacky" sort of way. I'm also not speaking of having sex in the middle of a store- we are talking about areas designed and rated appropriately.
In running my sim devoted to members only voyeurism and exhibitionism, I have found that many of the more experienced (and often older) residents in SL either believe that it should be kept strictly behind closed doors in private out of shyness and embarrassment or out of a worry about their reputations (much like in RL), or they avoid it, thinking that it's "just for noobs".
Of course, there are those who simply create alt accounts to escape feelings of guilt, judgement from a mate, or inhibitions, and go along their merry way. It would seem almost that this is the 'normal' thing to do- sow your wild oats on your alt if you travel in nonsexual circles to save face. If you frequent sexual areas you rarely see older, more well developed residents, which seems to support the myth (?) that it's "just for noobs".
I don't think that it's distasteful in general at all. I've known a lot of people who found the roleplay groups, fetishes, and clubs to be 'not their cup of tea' and harshly judged the activity itself as being immature or somehow less civilized because they didn't like the people who were involved (or the builds)... which all leads me to think that it must be RL influences and attitudes bleeding over, and those who proclaim to not only be above it but actually demean those who enjoy it, are just prudes.
What do you think?

It depends on what you are into. Some people are into it.

I think you mean "passe'", not "faux pas".
No, I don't think so. There can be a certain thrill in having sex in public, in RL as well as in SL.
Also, it's a lot cheaper to go borrow someone's equipment than spending thousands of $L to equip your own space with *everything* you might want.

Public sex?
I mean, I think at least two people in a room are exchanging hot IMs at any time. However, rezzing pose balls or being noisy is very inconsiderate...

Sorry Subversive, you're not going to find too many serious answers to this one. I'll take a stab at it.. kinda to just shove it into place...
Actually, you have a point on older accounts being outnumbered by younger accounts when it comes to the public sex spots. I gave this a moment's thought and figured out two points, one of which you brought up.
1. Older accounts owners use younger alt accounts for their pixel porn. Well, many older accounts run businesses that are tied to their SL name. Unless they are in the adult industry, it might be bad publicity to find them banging their pixel brains out in an adult venue.
2. User retention. Many of the new accounts were set up because they heard that SL was "teh hawt spoot for the sexxors!!!111!" These accounts tend to winnow themselves out because like RL, some of them can't get any in SL either. Others tend to get it and get bored of SL because they can't think beyond the sex. Eventually new accounts become old accounts and the old accounts are still around because, well, we've found something beyond sex to keep us entertained.
Me, I was here for the creating. I don't care what a person does in SL public as long as the place is rated for it. I can always just TP out.

clarification: not asking "are you into it" not asking "is it cool" not asking "is it popular" but rather, if you find it "tacky" to engage in it in SL, what is your reasoning behind that opinion... is it because of the location, the participants or just that you think in general that it's not a socially acceptable thing to do in SL (regardless of if you do it or not yourself) ? thank you Raudf, i agree with what you've said...and yes it's hard to move past the giggling and the sneering when trying to discuss sex in here i think that so many have as you said 'moved on'... i pick it up and put it down just like anything else, but, it seems that often many grow bored with it for whatever reason (the lack of imagination i think) and give up.

but rather, if you find it "tacky" to engage in it in SL, I think lots of things are tacky in SL. I guess it depends on how good the people involved are, I'm sure there's plenty of people who can't write who are just as tacky as someone lounging around in a frankenbarbie or ... what's male for "frankenbarbie"... covered in LD50 of heavy bling. Are you sure "tacky" is the word you wanted to use?

From: Subversive Vavoom I'm also not speaking of having sex in the middle of a store- we are talking about areas designed and rated appropriately. In this context there is nothing wrong with anyone having sex publicly if they want to and are comfortable with it. Personally, I do prefer most or all of the conversation stay in IM rather than public chat. Although if the conversation fits the RP of the environment, then even chat is okay.

wel you ask about sex taking place in land designated for it asumingly on a private sim, don't see why that would be a problem, if someone does not like it they don't go there, just like someone who does not like kids would not go to a playground or adoption center (at least I hope they don't)

That's not actually an example of finding something tacky.. it more an example of hypocrisy to be completely honestly Okay, no I don't find the public sex places as being either "so totally noobish," nor to I find them, "offensive for everyone." "So totally noobish" is someone hitting me up for sex in the welcome areas, Linden owned sandboxes or in stores that have absolutely nothing to do with sex. "Offensive for everyone," is seeing the *ahem* prims with split male appendages piled on the path for the Relay for Life.
