I keep seeing grandfathered private sims for sale (tier is $195/month instead of $295). When they are sold, does the grandfathered tier pass to the buyer? I'd be surprised if it does.

Nope not as far as I know. Only grandfathered to a particular person who purchased before a particular date

That's what I would have thought, but there are plenty of full transfer ads for them, using it a a selling point.

Well my experience is based on a chat I had in live help a few years back. My friend was going to sell me his grandfathered plot so i asked a linden if I could buy at the grandfather tier level. I was told no.

Probably best to wait for a more up to date response, but I will be bloody annoyed if you can!

are they selling the sim or is it where they retain ownership and you get owners rights?
that could get you lower tier..

if they are sellign it all then it makes no sense to advertise the tier unless they are showing why they can sell for such a lower price than someone else..

Fully transfering the sims. The ads I see are in this forum - Land Sales.

well then ya i wonder if people are trying to use it like tier will transfer then?

as long as they never say that amount is what they will be paying in tier then it's not false advertising but if they do they can get in trouble i would think..

is there any perk at all to buying a grandfathered sim?

Yes grandfathered status transfers. Never understood this but that's why they are more valuable.

That really does surprise me.

The grandfathered tier is transferable, but for how long? I've been seeing a lot more ads in the land forum for grandfathered sims than usual and this concerns me because I have one. I wonder if people know something I don't know....

I thought the lower tier transfered (hence the really attractive resale deal if you could find one) but I always get confused over whether or not most (if not all) grandfathered sims were class four rather than class five.

If they were class four, are they class five now?

There are class 5 grandfathered sims, not that many, but they are around.

I don't think that anyone knows something that the rest of us don't know. Rumours have started to spread because of the OS debacle, and the rumours may well turn out to be true, but just by chance.

They hinted that it wouldn't be so and initially set a date of February 2007 but it simply never changed. I really can't see the justification for transferring grandfathered status.

I think the rumours are based on Anshe selling plenty of them off.

Class 4s to go?
11-09-2008 16:54
My spidey sense is telling me that Class 4s are being dumped and the OS price is being raised cause they are being moved to class 5s; and grandfather sims are being sold because most are on Class 4s and the owners have the same spidey sense that I have that the Class 4s are history and therefore so will there $195 tier. And they are selling the grandfathered sims cause they think that people will pay more for them than if they sold off their regular sims.

So basically, LL is buying a bunch of new servers and moving a bunch of stuff to Class 5's.

Time will tell.

So your saying Anshe had that thought and is making a killing selling sims that will end up worth less than the selling price, oh no of course you wouldn't say that, no one would. :)

Well that's the other thing, if you're an openspace owner with 4 grandfathered openspaces you can apparently form them back into one full sim for free and hey presto you get grandfathered status on a full sim.

USD$95 x 4 for 4 openspaces or USD$195 for one full sim. I can totally see why people are going to want to go down this route even if it only lasts a few months before LL pull grandfathered status.

LL will have a bunch of class 5 servers sitting idle - presto, change o and all those class 4's with grandfathered tier are -poof- gone (And we bought them the new servers with the OS boom).

Pretty sneaky but that is what LL does best!

Thanks. All of that happened just before my time.

How would this work? If you own 4 openspaces and trade them in for a full sim now, don;t you get a "new" one at the $295/mo rate? Is there an older grandfathering of openspaces or a way to specify that you want to trade the four in for a grandfathered sim you buy in a private transaction?

From the knowledge base I assumed that you could convert 4 "free", but once you had the full sim you paid the current island tier, so you lose any discount you would get on tier between now and Jan with the grandfathering..

"The current monthly fee for a Full Region will then apply."

There are grandfathered openspaces at USD$50 a month. I'm not 100% sure if you can get the grandfathered status if you convert them back, a guy who has the grandfathered sims said it and others have said that this is what others are doing, converting them and then selling them off as full grandfathered sims whilst they still have that added value but I guess people would need to confirm this with LL as there's nothing in the knowledgebase article or blog post to suggest you can do this.

I have a few grandfathered sims, and can confirm that the status transfers. I too worry that it will go away soon, though. After all, some of these people selling have $295 tier sims too (surely Anshe does) - if that's the case why sell the cheaper ones? Still, at $100 less a month, it was worth the risk for me to buy them a few months ago (from small sellers, not Anshe). If they hold out for a few more months at that tier rate, they'll have been worth it.

That said, LL would be IDIOTS to raise the price now, after this OS debacle. But they've proven they're capable of great idiocy, so we shall see.

I was speaking to Concierge yesterday and put this very question to them..yes..those sims with tiers of 195 remain 195 when sold. The new owner pays 195 which I guess makes old private sims 'hot property'. I should stress I was told this applies till policy changes..however I was also told there were no immediate plans to change this policy.

wish my island was an old sim..Perre..:)
