I don't care how others write, here or in world, as long as I can understand what they're saying. Myself, I tend to write in complete sentences, replete with punctuation, for two reasons:
1.) It's easier. I type pretty fast and don't really have to think about it. I do have to think about abbreviating, not capitalizing and omitting punctuation.
2.) I have a fair number of friends who are not native English speakers. Since they are good enough to speak English, I figure I can at least chat to them using good grammar and spelling, just in case it helps them become more fluent.

My personal pet peeve is the word "neone"
Come on, your only saving a single key stroke and really messes up trying to read what was written.
I had an Alt in WoW I name Neone. I would stand around the bank in Ogrimar just waiting for people to say "neone need a shaman?" Of course I would yell 'Nope, I'm good."
...
Some shorthand is OK. AFK BRB WTF (Wow, That's Fantastic)
But sms text short hand for everything can easily break a mood.
U R the 1 I lov. cmon, it'l B gr8!

Personally i could care less about punctuation, grammer or capital letters in SL, emails or the forums. Yes, I know how to use each one...no i dont want to take the time to make it all perfect. If it was work related, i was getting paid for it or it was being graded..yep, im all over making it beautiful. But i think of forums and chat in SL like casual conversation..so why cant it be...well....casual?
I find it MUCH more annoying to read the forums and see someone attack someone else's character, breeding or intelligence because they have typos or lack punctuation. I find that to be rude, condescending and personally offensive. Whereas, lack of punctuation for me is a non issue...i have better things to get my panties in a wad about...LOL

Proper punctuation and grammar helps when running the text through a translator. Your original post looks like this - re-retranslated:
Make all of us agree, that a punctuation isnt important and that these ocurrences of a forum are basically e-mails and so it doesnt, does(makes) any distinction if we do not take into account mark of a question on commas of the periods and other part that does(makes) the letter clear and belief and to do(make), all of us agree, that we are too borrowed(occupied), I want for borrowed(occupied) to pay attention to syntax, and the grammar or to do(make) all of us all of us recognize, that these things are not cool or do(make) recognize, that we do not know how to use grammar and syntax

I don't bother about the odd wrong spelling, or an occasionally-omitted or misplaced apostrophe. I'm not an English teacher. But when it goes too far, I can't stand it. Some people are just like "PleEz if u get a chans pUt sum fLowrs on Algernon's grave iN d bakk yARRd" and it just drives me nuts. I loathe hacker-speak, and that hideously-idiotic "funny cat" stuff.

I certainly agree with you about attacking character or breeding. But I pause at intelligence. You're probably correct, too, for the narrow meaning of intelligence. A person could be very smart, and simply not be a native speaker of English or else have been deprived of a proper education. A person might be dyslexic. Or may have an excellent aptitude for math or art, while being poor at language skills. And as I acknowledged indirectly in a previous note, not everyone had typing classes in school. But the majority of people for whom English is a native language and who attended decent schools should be able to write at a high school level, including punctuation. So what is the significance of a total lack of punctuation? If it's not an intelligence issue, then why do people do it? Laziness? A lack of respect for the readers' needs? A stubborn refusal to believe that it affects reading speed? Skepticism that it will become automatic if you make it a habit? Idolization of e. e. cummings? Belief that it actually adds to the writing? (The base note is a rare example where it does.) I avoid picking on people in general, for the reasons you mention, though I might if a correction is particularly relevant. But silence is not approval. If it's rude to correct someone's mistakes, it's just as rude to ignore the audience's need for proper writing.

From: Thormec Micheline do we all agree that punctuation isnt important and that these forum entries are basically emails and so it doesnt make any difference if we leave out periods commas question marks and the rest of what makes writing intelligible and convincing and do we all agree that we are too busy i mean to busy to pay attention to syntax and grammar or do we all acknowledge that these things are not cool or do we all confess that we dont know how to use grammar and syntax What? I'm sorry. I could not understand a word you said, without the proper punctuation in place. Try repeating it, correctly this time!

I used to type with awesome speed but HORRIBLE mistakes, and I was lazy so I just hit post without a second thought.
And you know what? Instead of reading my thoughts and ideas and commenting on them, people just made fun of my awful grammar.
So I decided enough of this!
And now I work super hard to write my posts as well as I can, so people can no longer ignore my ideas and just make fun of my writing.
And it WORKED!
NOW people can read MY thoughts and comment on MY ideas!
And now they no longer make fun of my poor grammar and typos.
Nope.
Now they make fun of my thoughts and ideas!
LOLOL
A girl just can't win!

Punctuation, Spelling, Grammar,
Post appearance, Legibility,
Coherence ...
Only matter if you expect people to be able to understand what you wrote.
----------
If you dont mind not being understood, or even misunderstood ..
Then don't worry about it.

I have argued with my 16yr. old son for years about his poor writing. I have tried and tried to get him to understand that even if his thoughts were the most brilliant stuff ever thought of by mankind, if no one can read them or understand them, it is just scribbles on a piece of paper.

Thanks for posting that cartoon, Mari-- it's one of my favorites!

Twelve years in parochial school with teaching orders of nuns mean that I'm still unable to be sloppy with my sentences. It has been long enough that I'm now fuzzy on some of the grammatical rules, but I do try. Even in my IM's I use commas, periods and I start my sentences with capital letters. Sisters Francis and Bernadine Mary would be proud of me.

From: Raudf Fox Oh, I love the lack of grammar and punctuation! If you think it's bad here, you should see it in City of Heroes.
Examples of what I see on a daily basis there:
idiot = grammar-impaired tard.
idiot: team (Ooh, are you wanting me to team with you? Or are you announcing to me in IM that you are looking for team?)
idiot: u team (Points for being a bit more specific, but I don't take orders very well.)
idiot: team? (Hey, there's a question mark this time! But I still have to ask, are you looking for a team or are you asking if I want a team? If the former, good luck with that.)
At least in the Second Life forums, we do a better job at stating what we want/are looking for/etc. Although we do get the occasional head-scratcher who has completely managed to forgo learning the English language, it's much much better than elsewhere! Lol yes I seen that sort of idiot before. At least I'll say "Lvl47 Healer LFT, rez, buffs galore, can't fight way out of Lvl20 wet paper bag, no farming or filling" Which I then get a team invite walk in the mish door and find 4 Blasters, a Scrapper and a Controller standing at the door while the Tanker powerlevels them. I politely ask if they would like to engage in dispatching some evil doers ourselves instead of standing around doing nothing, I find out 2 of them are the tanks alts and the others are too chicken to fight. So I pull a mob to them, exit the mission and quit the team
