do we all agree that punctuation isnt important and that these forum entries are basically emails and so it doesnt make any difference if we leave out periods commas question marks and the rest of what makes writing intelligible and convincing and do we all agree that we are too busy i mean to busy to pay attention to syntax and grammar or do we all acknowledge that these things are not cool or do we all confess that we dont know how to use grammar and syntax

When I type to my friends in world I tend to leave out the capitalization and punctuation most the time. When I post here I always try to get the capitalization and punctuation correct....just to please the people who like to correct every typo or mistake made in typing, or if someone is going to criticize my post at least they can't throw in "and you can't even type".

I do not agree. I try to use all the keys on my keyboard (they all want to come out and play!), especially in these forum threads. However, I do tend to use abbreviations in my inworld chats.

I hereby offer one lesson for the class:

its: the possessive pronoun form of the personal pronoun "it"
it's: a contraction of the words "it is" or "it has"

I try to use proper grammar, spelling, and capitilization in everything I do. If it's missing, it's probably because I was running out of time, or I just typed too fast, and didn't look over whatever it was that I wrote.

Lack of punctuation and capitilization makes reading things harder for me. Bad spelling makes things annoying occasionally, when it makes it hard to understand, and netspeak really doesn't bother me unless it's in a situatino where such a thing seems rude to me. (Such as tutorials, talking about important matters, asking not to be treated like a kid, etc).

ETA:: Though I do often seem to lack a final punctuation mark for sentences where I have parenthesis at the end... meh.

I also prefer my grammar lessions in the form of comics.

Oh, I love the lack of grammar and punctuation! If you think it's bad here, you should see it in City of Heroes.

Examples of what I see on a daily basis there:

idiot = grammar-impaired tard.

idiot: team (Ooh, are you wanting me to team with you? Or are you announcing to me in IM that you are looking for team?)

idiot: u team (Points for being a bit more specific, but I don't take orders very well.)

idiot: team? (Hey, there's a question mark this time! But I still have to ask, are you looking for a team or are you asking if I want a team? If the former, good luck with that.)

At least in the Second Life forums, we do a better job at stating what we want/are looking for/etc. Although we do get the occasional head-scratcher who has completely managed to forgo learning the English language, it's much much better than elsewhere!

Well, some of us are naturally impaired with punctuation... other spell better or have better grammar. I found that as long as I can understand what is being said I am just fine. No need to get all anal about these things.

Just a friendly hint... correcting a spelling typo in the middle of a hot and steamy moment can become a joke that will follow you forever. Or at least until your break up. :)

"I'm just a soul who's intentions are good...Oh Lord! Please don't let me be misunderstood!"

I'm a big fan of precise vocabulary, rule-abiding grammar, and effective punctuation for communication between truth seeking sentients everywhere. I've noticed that some people really sabotage, with poor writing, their efforts to be heard, so I try to do my best.
On the other hand I must admit I've seen others get their message across quite well with some really odd style.

Sometimes my spelling is off, but I try to write clear enough for people to follow.

I don't worry about others and how they type, spell, format etc. Life is too short. :)

/me tried to say all that ^^ in one breath...is holding the remainder of the breath as there's no full stop....passes out and falls off her chair...

No, we do not all agree! Grammar and spelling is not so important imho (anyone who knows me inworld knows I am a typo queen!) - but punctuation indicates when to pause/take breath etc...trying to follow text without punctuation is too much effort for my liking! :)

typos...

Typos are certainly forgivable, especially in IMs. I wonder, however, how many of these grammatical and syntactical distractions would easily be corrected if what was written was simply read before hitting “submit.” My guess is it’s just laziness. And to an earlier response I say I agree - life is short which is why I don’t want to have to parse a forum submission in order to read through it.

All that I guess can be overlooked…maybe…because these are casual and quick writings, but you know what is ker-ay-zee? When you buy something on SL and you need to translate the instructions into understandable English. This is not so applicable when written by an SL’er whose first language isn’t English. But when one is selling something and word-of-mouth might make or break the sales success, it seems ker-ay-zee not to ensure that understandable instructions accompany the product.

Firefox checks spelling as I type, so there's no longer any excuse for most spelling errors. (Preferring IE to Firefox is no excuse at all.)

I find that poor sentence structure, miserliness with words, and disorganized writing are much worse problems than bad punctuation or spelling. A total lack of punctuation is different from poor punctuation, and falls into the much worse category. No amount of punctuation can rescue some of the extreme run-on sentences I see here. The same is true for enormous paragraphs without breaks.

Just as the way you dress influences other people's opinions, so does the way you type. When someone writes only in netspeak (e.g. ur for your, r for are), it immediately brings up the "possible underage resident" alarm for me - at least for writing in the forums. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt when they're asking questions, but they're at a disadvantage if they need to show they know what they're talking about.

Finally, people who can't hit the shift key have clearly flunked their junior high typing course. (They still have those, don't they? Or do we teach students to type on cell phones? Seriously, touch typing was the most valuable course I took in junior high, and I feel sorry for people who had to learn to hunt and peck on their own.)
