. I believe the resmods can remove a thread from view. placing it into a queue for review by a Linden moderator, where it could stay forever.

I think you're going a little far. I personally have a rule that even the silliest of OP's deserves a minimum of two pages before the thread is derailled. Two pages is more than sufficient to answer any serious questions. The status quo is just fine, and LL probably don't really care enough to close it down either.
