Five...

I once showed up in an NPIOF alt and got hit with no less than THREE "!QUIT"s. I IMed the owner of the store saying "You know, copybot protector doesn't do anything but annoy your legitimate customers... the version of the copybot that paid attention to "!QUIT" was obsolete even before the copybot protector was written". I got back a bunch of nasty flames about how I was just there to rip them off and I was probably running a copybot myself, and I'd never bought anything there so they didn't care what I thought.

Needless to say I've still never bought anything there.

I definitely think that the business owner needs to be contacted about something like this.

You don't need salespeople in SL. You can quite happily run a business without it. many do. Adding a salesperson should be done when there is something value-added that that person can bring to the experience.

That could be putting a friendly face on the business, providing extra information about the products that wouldn't normally be put on notecards, or helping the customer make a decision as to what would fit best in their Second Lives.

If the customer knows what they want, doesn't need help and makes that obvious, then a good sales person will leave that customer alone, offering only to be IMed if there are questions. This is how we train our salespeople. Being obnoxious isn't good for any business in SL, because it's far too easy to just tp away and go elsewhere.

However, it's not possible for the owners to be in-world all the time, and to see what their salespeople do, and putting out monitoring devices is pretty poor form. Finding good salespeople in SL is very very difficult - most people see it as a game and don't take it at all seriously. That, of course, isn't good for the business, who would then be better off without them. Therefore giving the business owner a chance to correct the issue is the best thing you can do.

And yes, a salesperson trying to intimidate you is of course going to say that they are best buddies with the boss - it's just another intimidation tactic. If the owner doesn't correct the issue, and send you some sort of apology then you can blame the business, rather than the salesperson.

But in some ways this is like RL - you can't start publicising this without them suing you for defamation - and in SL you're going to get the "there's two sides to every story".

Best thing is just to let your friends know of your experience, and, just like good word of mouth spreads, let the bad word of mouth spread too.

Mael, nobody said that. What was said was that in any situation like this, the readers only get one side of the story. Personally, I believe you.

There are two things you can do when something like this happens.

1. Tell off the offending salesperson. Explain (as politely as possible) why you find their comments or attitude rude and offensive, and let them know they've lost a sale. This may not help much, but it can give you a feeling of satisfaction. As suggested, you can also send a note to the owner.

2. Just go elsewhere. Don't worry, don't flame the place in the forums, don't look for a BBB to complain to. You don't have to. Word gets around. If a business isn't nice to its customers, pretty soon they won't have any.

Creators also want a complaining organization lol

Creators also get a place to complain about some customers?
I've had customers IMing me for over an hour over a 5L item because they couldnt select it (click on it and choose edit)
I have a constant flow of customers telling me they lost their purchases maybe months after they bought it and want me to replace whatever they lost.
Others tell me the boxes are empty, when I check the boxes the things are inside
I also have people asking for refunds because they decided to change their minds over having prim babies.
All this in rude tone and with a few F words when you reply you're not replacing/refunding/giving away another piece of furniture.
Some customers also think they own you because they go to your store, and resent you dont reply on the spot when they IM you, we're not allowed rl?
/me sighs

The reason naming isnt allowed here is for very good reason.

People have this habit of believing stories without even hearing the other side of it and without even knowing or ever dealing with either of the people involved.

I agree totally. Trying to name and shame is pretty bad style on a public forum.

I've had customers in the past that were a total pain in the bum. They'd ask a 1000 questions about a two dollar item. Ya know, like it was a real car they were thinking of buying.

When you have somebody asking too many questions then it's in your best interest to offend them and then they wont bother you again. I also don't want to take money from somebody that clearly can't afford it. I'm always happy to annoy these types. It's for their own good.

The rest, I am with you on, but it bugs me when shop owners do not make sure their vendors work. I know that we're supposed to figure out how to click edit and still buy it but Im sorry, I can't and also, I won't. For one thing not all vendors even say how much the item is. Some just say 'fast pay'. Or even have a blank to fill in the amount. Lol.

However I let the shop owner know once, in a note card, and then I leave it alone. If they don't care enough to reply, I don't care enough to buy. :p

No one should curse at you though. Or ask for refunds if there is a sign posted clearly that you do not give any. Etc.

On the scale of the SL economy, you shouldn't need to sell too many L$750 items to make tier, and I've run into a lot of people who see that as "over two weeks stipend" and think about it on those terms. It you're not willing to scale your sense of value to the L$ level, you probably shouldn't be in business in SL.

Time doesn't scale. Three hours is three hours.

Two dollars is two dollars.

It's unreasonable to go into store and ask a 1000 questions about a $2 item.

Understanding is a two way street.

A monkey in the hand is worth two.

The budgie is never alone when the cage is full of poop.

A fish on land is lost in the sand of time.

2+2=4

If you're not having fun, then you're not having fun, but there's no difference between someone bending your ear for two hours over a L$520 item and someone bending your ears for two hours over hot lesbian tea.

Either you're charging too little for the object, or you need to go "if you don't like it, I'll give you your money back" before they get that point.
