I dont know if any of you have seen this video of Phillip Rosedale, aka Phillip Linden, but it's 28 minutes long, so just a warning. I really never knew how cute he really is..lol..
I have to say, it really changed how I look at SL. At the time this was recorded, there were 20,000 cpus running our wonderful SL world.
After watching this, does it make you more grateful for having this platform? I know I am.

The link is down. I got a 404 error.

Looks like I'll never know how grateful I am for SL.

The trick of using an image tag with a link and putting a question mark at the end doesn't work for a fair number of forum users.

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/the_inspiration_of_second_life.html

There's the plain link.

In this case there was a space in front of the question mark.

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/the_inspiration_of_second_life.html

There is the image tagged version without a space before the question mark.

Now if I just had speakers hooked up to this computer.

Fascinating presentation! I was just going to pop over and see the first minute or two, but watched the whole thing. We need to show this to every person in our lives who thinks this is just playing with dolls.

I have watched others of these TED presentations and always enjoy them, whatever the topic.

Incidentally, Philip is fairly charismatic for a human, but there is nothing cute about him that I can see.

Yes, as I said, it really changed my outlook on SL. It's a very good presentation, and as you said, it shows that this is not just playing with dolls. Although, I still think Phillip is cute ..grins.

Well, it's like my dad always said, it doesnt matter where you get your appetite as long as you eat at home. Besides, I'm just admiring him from afar..lol..doesnt hurt to look, does it? It just makes SL seem so more homey now..sighs

Actually, I just went to Sirloin's buffet, and Im pretty full. Nah, I'm not looking at him like that, I just think he'd be a cool guy to know, and being cute makes it all the more pleasant to look at. It's better than watching the video with the humpback of Notre Dame presenting it.

;0 hehe i've thought that too - brad pitt with just a bit of kevin bacon perhaps?? ;0 (hey i like kevin :) he seems like one of the nicest guys in hollywood, he's so dependable and reliable, no wonder everyone wants him in their movies ;0...

lol and i didn't manage to get it in on the other thread, but i kinda think 'sham-wow' vince kinda looks like philip's younger brother, maybe the one nobody ever thought would go too far... ;0 lol those shifty eyes of his. (i wouldn't mind trying a 'slap-chop' though - /me is a sucker for helpful kitchen utensils ;0)

p.s. there's a longer vid with philip at
http://fora.tv/2006/11/30/Philip_Rosedale
and i think they have more if ya do a search for him.

OMG, now that you mention it, he DOES have a Brad Pitt look! Maybe Hollywood should get Phillip to star in some romantic movies..lol, wonder if he's married to and Angelina look-alike. :p

LOL - I'm not picking up on the Pitt vibe, but I do appreciate all he had to say. I even looked up his av out of curiosity since he mentioned it. Can't really see it in his profile but I do love the Wonka quotes in his 1st life page. The 2nd quote was my email sig for a lonnng time.

The stats on *amount* of use per age group were interesting. He seems to look at things from all angles, which is what, I guess, makes him founder/CEO of something, let alone something this unusual in intent and scope.

To imagine it is one thing it takes other skills to bring something into being. And it says a lot about his faith in humanity or even curiosity about same, that he let users have so much input.

I don't even remember now if it was public-beta or early-public but I was actually in SL early-early. Regrettably at the time I couldn't justify the time spent or the call for a newer computer to keep at it, to others; that, and I remember just wandering around, wondering what to do. (If I just could've had even the basics of "prim" explained to me; no computer background at all, here. And I only ever met a couple of people in world, then.)

I couldn't find words to express or justify based on something I knew it *would be* but wasn't tangible there yet.

RL took me away. I tried again in 2006, it had changed a lot and I still "didn't get it." I'm just glad I'm in it now.

This is how I've *always* thought of SL, though; from the first time I read about it in some magazine. I just had a feeling this was onto something, a new paradign. Virtual life has the capabilty not only to impact but to change the world and everything in it.

i had a laugh when he was talking about how you can see people grow in sl or how you can tell what stage they are in..he was saying that you see this person all full of life doing whatever they can find to do..more or less like going on every ride in an amusement park.
not in those words..
then you see this crowd of zen likes looking to find what they want to do next..a more mellow and in control type lol
i just thought that was kind of neat because i could relate to what he meant..i have mellowed a lot since i fisrt came here..more so in the last year than any..

he has no interrest in either one of you! dream on ladies.. (or gays)..
:D

Why must mainly women in a certain age/mental situation, always hunger for things they never get.. and get dissapointed in a way? Be realistic.. there are a gazillion guys out there, that might not be the same looking (but still goodlooking nevertheless), but better matching for you..

It's the inside that counts mostly in the end.. the brain controls the movements and the thoughts, speech, etc... the body is just a bag holding the brain. Infact most "hollywood" looking guys are inside not so nice, very arrogant and spoiled, idiotic even. (look at Hugh Grant, Tom Cruise, e.g. they both are completely retards inside.. untrustworthy guys (fucking outside the door with a groupie), insane thought (e.g. Scientology)

oh well some women live in a fantasy world in RL.. ;)
And for the real diehard fantasy peeps:
Happy masturbating on something you never gonna get (and feel) for real.:D

I prefer the real RL, with the real things i really have and can interact with.. (my GF e.g.)

Not troll, just pshychology of the (specific emotional conditioned) womens brains.
It's been tested many times.. ;)

And me, heartbroken? hehe, absolutely not! my REAL RL (not surreal as you women here have) relationship is very stable and happy.

Infact, it seems more that YOU are heart broken, and desperately seeking for connection, that you are striving for surreality.

Reality hurts sometimes, doesn't it? but ignoring or fighting it, doesn't make it less true.
