Housedress fetish? Now that you mention it, you can add it to the secretary, naughty nurse, school teacher, catholic schoolgirl, Sears Catalog model, postal worker, Samoan fisherwoman, female firefighter, stripper, sealer, sheetrocker, policewoman, judge, girl-next-door, Girl-three-blocks-away, shoe, latex, thong, stocking, kelp, exploding cigar, yo-yo, and pigtail fetishes. And that's just page one of the list. Edit: I forgot Iron Chef. That Cat Cora...Wahwahwah hubba hubba!! _____________________

Obligatory question: how thrilled are you? http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/10/19/new-search-currently-under-development/ Well, I'm worried about how they will show up. I'm assuming in Classifieds, it will be by money paid, as it always was. But everything else - it seems to be hit-driven. The problem with that is the already bigger will get bigger, and the already smaller will become ever more obscure. I'm small enough to worry about that. coco P.S. And what were those pictures shown across the top? I didn't get that part about why or how those pictures got to be there. _____________________

In general, I like the new search plans. I did ask in the Blog, however, that they exclude objects from being listed in Search if yes, they are checked as "for sale", but the owner doesn't have mod rights on the item. There are quite a few things in-world that have "for-sale" checked, but the current owner has no way to uncheck that box.
So... Land listed in search-places, Object is marked "for sale", and owner has mod rights on the object? Default to listing it in search. Land listed in search-places, Object is marked "for sale", but owner does NOT have mod rights on the object? Default to NOT listing it in search. (This was my request, and is not yet in their plans). Land NOT listed in search-places, Object is marked "for sale"? Default to NOT listing it in search. I am a little concerned about the Profile info being posted on Internet-accessible web sites. We'll apparently be able to restrict SOME, but not ALL, of our profile information from being listed? I don't know. I don't mind too much if someone who has bothered to get an avatar themselves and has learned enough about SL to read profile info can see what is in everyone's profiles. They have sort of 'joined the club', so to speak, and should have at least some clue about what SL is. I'm less amenible to the idea of any oddball on the Internet who happens across the website being able to do that. "Ohhh! Looky here. Dis website says all these people are furry BDSM Freakos! Better bomb 'em all with hate mail!". Urf... Let's just hope the web-accessible part of the Search function has no link to e-mail addresses. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

The new search facility is not available yet, however, all the check boxes are available to click in advance for when it is released. So you can check in advance what should be marked for sale and what shouldn't be marked. I myself realise some of my Heart trees are for sale, have to change that. Also it gives you time to rename all your stuff to something meaningful, from stuff like 'bath object' to 'bath taps' _____________________

I wasn't happy with WoW involving me with the armory and I'm even more unhappy about SL including my profile in search for this. I do not want people outside SL searching my profile, it's not right. I should not be in this shit by default.

wonder if the classified fees are going to go up? I don't think the base fee will be raised but I'm sure it'll be even more important to be on the top of the page. If you search for say "pose" in the all tab, on the left had side you'll get the mix of places, profiles, objects and groups and on the right hand side you'll get the top 10 classifieds (by price) with the word "pose" in them. Not to mention it looks like the top 8 classifieds get picture spots when first choosing the "all" tab. While some of the changes are much needed - specifically sorting the places by a number of unexpalined factors with traffic being only of them - it seems to add more stuff to sift through instead of lowering it. I think I would have prefered them to do drop down boxes for places, classifieds, objects, land sales, groups and profiles. Or even perhaps checkboxes. Then you still have the extremly limited parcel description for keywords where the only good one for that is classifieds which is a complete joke as it is now. _____________________

When they say searching profiles I wonder if they just mean user name, or people who have the particular word written inside their profile? If the latter, thats a very cool improvement when it comes to finding people with similar interests. (Though Im sure there will be many out there who -dont- want their profiles searchable)

pie. yes?????? Won't be long before search serves-up Geico ads along with our SL results. bingo!!! My biggest hope is that this is the first step to killing 'traffic' thereby killing 'camping' How do you suppose being able to browse thru the SL Search via the SL website will effect SLEX and On-Rez? Have they just been GOM'd? _____________________

Ok I was just reading up on all this and the one thing I see no talk about is price. What is this new service going to cost us as creators, store owners and so on who run classifieds? Also how is that going to work? I mean lets face it, right now the Lindens make a nice little profit from people who pay 5000 a week to try and stay on top of the listings and such so I do not see the Lindens just charging one flat fee to get listed. That would cut their own throat. Hhhhhmmmmmm.... Makes me wonder.

What about price? It's exactly the same as before. Classifieds I think will be the least improved part of the search.
To be clear, the list of classifieds in the right column of the All tab is exactly the same list that would be generated if you typed the same words into the existing Classifieds tab (see image above). This may change in the future as we work to improve the in-world advertising experience, watch for more information on that in the future! Well on reading this it seems that classified results will be exactly the same as before. I suppose the objects search will be more useful. _____________________

...I think I would have prefered them to do drop down boxes for places, classifieds, objects, land sales, groups and profiles. Or even perhaps checkboxes... They said that they'll still have the individual search tabs (classifieds, land etc), but this sounds like a good idea - like 'filtering' the new 'All' tab results. You should suggest this on the Blog comments if they're not full yet. _____________________

If history in sl has taught us anything, it's to proceed with mucho caution when downloading new stuff. Experienced and longevity of sl teaches you a lot.

Classifieds are an economic sink and in part serve to offset the L$ that get introduced by the weekly stipends among other things. LL doesn't actually earn anything on classifieds. It's easier to just think of it as macroeconomic supply and demand, but a couple illustrative scenarios: Advertiser A spends more money in-world now that she doesn't have to pay so much for Classifieds, and those from whom she's buying now have L$s from A instead of buying L$s on the Lindex. Advertiser B has more money from the reduced Classified charges, so he cashes out more, putting more L$s for sale on the Lindex, reducing the need for Supply Linden to sell new L$s to maintain the exchange rate. (Which is all kinda academic, I think, since I don't think the new Search will have much impact on Classifieds, at least at time of introduction. Although, arguably, improving the other forms of Search may simply reduce the use of Classifieds.) |

Although, arguably, improving the other forms of Search may simply reduce the use of Classifieds. That's how I see it. The search all facility is going to be much more useful for finding items. Unless you're one of the top eight classifieds, it's likely that you're going to find the classified system less effective. |

Well, among the things that offset L$ sinks is one very significant L$ source: Sale of fresh, crisp, Linden-minted L$s on the Lindex. And LL definitely does get revenue by selling new L$s. If the Classified sink were suddenly dramatically reduced, one would expect that the need to mint new L$s would decline more or less correspondingly, all else being equal. Even if you did assume that classifieds count fully towards Supply Linden sales, you're still not paying LL anything. The US$ they receive comes from whoever is buying on the LindeX, the L$ you're paying LL doesn't have any monetary value in the real world. |

And that's just page one of the list. Kelp? Yo-yo? Trout, I've never even HEARD of some of these fetishes, and can't imagine what some of them (including these two) could possible involve. How on earth can I become a Certified Slut if I don't even know what everyone is talking about? I feel like a freshman in high school again, listening to the juniors talking and trying to figure out enough of what they're saying that I won't look totally un-hip. Your next project, after wading through that mountain of racy photos, is to take your list, add definitions, and publish it. "A Compendium of Fetishes". With pictures. I know a lot of escorts who'll want to buy a copy. And, if you're pulling my leg again, that's OK. Just make up some stuff about any imaginary fetishes you threw in that list. Everyone in SL will believe you. You can then be proud and humble for having introduced several new fetishes into the world. _____________________

Stipends are something that has to be paid out every week, no matter what. Supply Linden sales depend on how much the economy can take. Classifieds barely even cover 15% of the stipends right now. Even if you did assume that classifieds count fully towards Supply Linden sales, you're still not paying LL anything. The US$ they receive comes from whoever is buying on the LindeX, the L$ you're paying LL doesn't have any monetary value in the real world. I mean, it's not just classifieds. All sinks--texture uploads, etc--benefit LL by decreasing the money supply, creating demand for Supply sales; and all sources cost LL by reducing the need for such sales. The Lindex transactions are clearly valued in real-world money, but even aside from the Lindex, purely source-to-sink flow is used by LL for real-world purposes like advertising (stipends) and controlling demand for storage capacity (asset uploads). |
