It looks great to me. Definite improvement. The one flaw I see in the system is the objects search. I would expect every junkie place that had campers to now place the most common objects on their property for sale. If I am understanding that correctly.

I made this happen.

For months and months, I've had http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-86 , which talks about better searching, listed in my signature. See http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=159771 .

Last night, I took it out and added some other pet issues (which you should vote for!).

So... Because I stopped asking, they are finally putting it into play. Had I known, I would have removed it sooner.

Feel free to thank me with tasty pies and/or cookies.

For the initial launch of Search, any parcels set to “Show in Search” with objects marked as “for sale” will be defaulted to their “Show in Search” checkbox on and will be listed in Search. Any objects on parcels set to which are not set for sale will default to having the “Show in Search” checkbox not selected. If your parcel is set to not show in Search, your objects will not be listed by default, regardless of their settings.
Congrats to LL for picking the only viable solution that doesn't violate "privacy" like ESC's bot does.

(Edited to add that hopefully the new Places search is a bit more intelligent in taking the listed parcel prims into account as well. That should - largely - eliminate false use of keywords. If I'd search for shoes I'd get "Shiny Things" at the top because they sell dozens of pairs of shoes, and not a camping infested mall that doesn't have a single vendor selling shoes)

I've been hearing snippets about this for a while. I don't think profiles should be searchable by default but the rest of it sounds good.

This is also an opportunity to monitize SL users for RL advertising. Won't belong before search serves-up Geico ads along with our SL results.

This is going to be the biggest improvement to Second Life. Ever. It's friggin huge. Now I'm REALLY pissed that I have to go see a client when I was planning on having a day off.. I SO can't wait to play with this!

Curious why you think they shouldn't be.

Because I don't want RL ads being sent to my AV and this should be an opt in not an opt out feature. I'm opted in already without even downloading the new viewer. I should be deciding whether my profile is searchable from outside.

I'm also id verified so how long before my RL info is searchable from outside SL for targetted advertising and other nonsense.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of that. That, is scary.

FWIW, I downloaded the release candidate... not a lot to play with there yet (at least on Linux--maybe I'm missing the fun), but the Profile has a "Show in Search" check box that I don't remember from before, and that was unchecked when I opened it.

I wonder...

1) What will happen with land (shop) names in All search? Now they are listed on top. Will land names be cluttered by the thousands of items for sale that show up in the same All list? Or will land names remain on top?

2) What will prevent people from making many single prim plywood boxes with all kinds of keywords in order to get high in search?

This is from the Search FAQ about the Profiles Search:

"All profiles are *included* by default, but if you want to only have a limited profile available, simply uncheck the box next to “Show in Search”.

Actually the opposite is true with the new v1.18.4. My profile has the “Show in Search” box *unchecked by default*, which is way to go imo, since the profile search has to be an opt-in and not opt-out with the new search.

I don't get to play with the new toys :/
It says it's verifying cache files, then crashes to the desktop the moment it clicks over to the logging in part of the blue bar...

Tried uninstalling, deleting the setting directory and reinstalling.
