Sometimes when you look across a crowded dance floor, and see someone you would like to talk to..So you look at their profile to see what interests they have, it is very annoying to see that the profile does not show them online...My first thoughts are either Arrogant A**h**e, or Ignorant...

/me makes note: avoid this person inworld at all costs.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Better yet, when you telepathically perceive that he's seen you across that crowded dance floor and is about to click on your profile, delete everything in it.
That'll REALLY burn his waffle.

I see your thought, my view is that somehow then the person has forgotten to adjust their profile now they have finished that important work...What some idiots we have amongst us.

me follows Brann's advice and fixes my profile to go blank when randychris tries to read it...;)

Have any of you come across this before???

You are stood in front of a person and talking to them, both in room and IM, when you click on their profile it does not show them to be online...The words "currently online" do not appear on their profile..
To me this seems very stupid as it is obvious the person is online, and knows that you will access their profile...
If it is done that only friends and groups that they are in can see them online, WHY THE F*** DO THEY GO TO OTHER PLACES...

Why don't they just spend all their time walking around Orientation Island, pestering all the newbies, and leave the rest of SL for the "sensible" people to enjoy....

Why would they bother toggling that on and off just to go places... they simply set it and leave it as such. Why would they care if you knew that they have it set that way?

Do you have 2 Alts on together, so 1 is camping all day and AFK, earning you money, while the other goes around playing? Today i was camping and it was the unresponsive campers that did not show on line, no matter how friendly you where to them you got no response. Is this just people being ignorant or AFK and not even at their PC?

No, neither of my alts were camping, I and another me were doing various things at my home.

But many campers are AFK, indeed many of them appear to be bots.

where the heck does it say someone is offline or online on your profile?
i've never seen anything on anyones profile to say they are offline or online..

If it's enabled, it will turn up near the top over the born date.
I have never even paid attention to or noticed this indicator on anyone's profile.

Who the f**k cares about a stupid little indicator in a profile anyway. If they are standing there talking to me then they are online. If they are not responding to me then they are either afk, swamped in IMs, cybersexing, or not noticing chat for a million other reasons -- I move on and talk to someone else.

Geesh, the things some people stress over - get a life already.

Yeah, sometimes I stand on the other side of the room from the campads and offer $100L to the first camper that reaches me, haven't had to pay out yet :)

Now I know it's freedom of choice and everything, but WHY do you need 2 ALTS. on at the same time...Also why is there a need for ALTS.???

For each of the voices in your head.. which is why I have 6219 alts.. and they all have cool names.

Most I have had on at one time was 412 - was testing a VMware cluster. Was cool, but hard to type for that many at once. I'm glad they upped my medication.

I vote that, in times of "high load on the server", Kokoro must be locked in a closet in RL!

Hi there everyone..
Thanks for all your comments, it has certainly brightened up my day...
I only raised this idea to see if anyone else had experienced this...The times that I have seen this is when I have been camping and every profile that is camping with me, has had their profile set to show them offline...Now the only annoying thing about this is when they have some problems with the camp system, and when you try to help, they do not respond for some reason...The best laugh I had today was when the 6 other profiles that were camping with me, all had their profiles not showing them online..But all of them belonged to the same group as me...So the idea that it is "show online to friends or my groups" does not work well....
Also as I said before, the responses are much more entertaining than another forum I belong to...Where nearly every thread is posted by some guy asking "What do you think of my C**K?"
Thanks for all the laughs everyone, and have fun in what ever you do...

So is there a difference between a BOT and an ALT.???
Also how do you tell the diference, as these are normal AV's with profile information...

An alt is simply a second avatar owned by the same RL person. I have several, used for testing, RPing, and for when I want to be online but not to be accessible to friends, just want some quiet times. there are many other reasons for running alts.

Bots are stripped down versions of the client that are automated to do things without RL human intervention, so landbots are programmed to search for cheap land and buy it faster than a human could, campbots are programmed to find available camping spaces and jump on them.

People also use bots to just sit on their own land and generate high traffic scores - the point of using bots is that because they are stripped down clients they take less of your pc's resources so you can run more. My pc is a mid-range one and about a year old, 2 alts run fine at the same time, I can just barely run four alts at once (no good reason for doing this, just tried to see what it could do), but I could probably run ten or a dozen bots because they don't use the pc's resources in the same way.

The general view seems to be that alts are fine, even multiple ones at once if there's a point to it, but bots tend to be looked down on. There are perfectly legitimate uses for both (the most obvious good use of bots I can think of is as models in stores) and both can be abused. Both bots and alts are perfectly within TOS, but most of the uses of bots seem to be widely seen as gaming the system in some way.

As for how you tell the difference, you can't. Bots are less likely to have things in their profiles I would think, and I have seen some that actually have "I am a bot" or words to that effect in the profile. Bots also have a tendency to be default AVs, simply because there's little point in the owner spending time doing anything with them, but there is no guaranteed way to tell.

Yes, purpose. Alts are generally run by a live typist and intended to interact to some extent, whereas Bots are 'programmed' to perform one or two activities and don't generally have anyone directly controlling them once they're logged in and set on their task.

You may not be able to based on profile...some Bot runners do fill them out in order to be less obvious about what they are. Bots often - but not always - look fairly new and do not respond to chat. It's quite possible that your fellow campers were not actually Bots, but simply AFK...a lot of people leave their avs logged in to camp while they go to work or to bed.

Btw, it's none of your business whether people chose to show online in search or not. It's not stupid or arrogant, it's just taking advantage of one of the limited privacy measures LL affords us. I don't like being contacted out of the blue by strangers, how peculiar. If we're in the same location, you know I'm online. If you're on the other side of the grid, you don't need to.
