Have any of you come across this before???

You are stood in front of a person and talking to them, both in room and IM, when you click on their profile it does not show them to be online...The words "currently online" do not appear on their profile..
To me this seems very stupid as it is obvious the person is online, and knows that you will access their profile...
If it is done that only friends and groups that they are in can see them online, WHY THE F*** DO THEY GO TO OTHER PLACES...

Why don't they just spend all their time walking around Orientation Island, pestering all the newbies, and leave the rest of SL for the "sensible" people to enjoy....

It's the same as in the real world where you might call someone on the phone while in their house or office, and get voice mail. If you are standing there, you don't really need to have the online state printed in the profile, do you? It's there for times when people don't choose to be bothered, it doesn't get in the way otherwise. There are lots of ways to check outside the profile, but it still works as a reasonable pest deterrent.

Could be SL playing up, I've had two alts on at once and one hasn't shown in the profile as online when the other one looks.

Could be they changed it to not show them online while they were busy doing something and forgot to change it back.

Could be that they aren't mindreaders and don't know that the person they're talking to will look at their profile.

Could be they assume that anyone talking to them face to face will be bright enough to work out if they are online without the pointer in the profile.

I see your thought, my view is that somehow then the person has forgotten to adjust their profile now they have finished that important work...What some idiots we have amongst us.

Sometimes when you look across a crowded dance floor, and see someone you would like to talk to..So you look at their profile to see what interests they have, it is very annoying to see that the profile does not show them online...My first thoughts are either Arrogant A**h**e, or Ignorant...

Now I know it's freedom of choice and everything, but WHY do you need 2 ALTS. on at the same time...Also why is there a need for ALTS.???

Certainly one of the thoughts that crosses my mind when I see complaints about something as silly as an online status flag is "wow, this person is a little full of himself."

Alts are, of course, necessary for testing several areas of SL functionality while building and changing items, to manage groups when more than 25 are needed, to help guard against certain types of fraud. They are incredibly useful to work in peace, there are too many residents who simply don't respect that there are times for work and play, and that others aren't at their beck and call 24/7.

Well there are a lot of good uses for alts, one is to test weapons on, use them as manniquins, use them to test your security or your selling boxes are working and not giving your stuff away for free, they can also be great for absolute privacy while building or with the partner, sometimes the customers can wait an hour :)
Alts are als good for storing money and backups of inventory items, or stuff you don't use often, when your builder main is loaded up with 20,000 of builders materials and textures and you want to do combat games, an alt with only 2000items gets around in combat with less lag.
Also sometimes because we can't change our names, an alt can be created with a better first name for StarWars roleplay than Ironforgehammer the 3rd

Funny, reading your posts in this thread, I imagine that is the first thought most of us had about you.

I quite agree with you...Now I have been informed why some ALTS. are necessary...
But then I am just a poor guy, from a poor family...Here to have fun, and enjoy all that SL has to offer...Now I can continue to enjoy my SL experience with a clear mind...So on that note, I bid you all sweet dreams, and hope that you all have a pleasant experience...

If Linden Lab added a fart indicator then I'm sure people like you would complain when others turned it off.

I think it is a good laugh... Certainly beats another forum I belong to where nearly every post is titled "what do you think of my C**K.."

Have any of you come across this before???

You read the forums and someone will invariably complain that you are not doing everything you can to feed their incredible sense of self-entitlement. And even if someone slaps them upside the head with a beautifully subtle bit of sarcasm, they still think everyone is in agreement with them.

Here's a clue : there is no law in the ToS that people are available to your profile proddings. If it's not set up to your liking, deal with it.
The discerning profile reader will be able to deduce that, via the sheer presence of the avatar in the room and, presumably, text emanating from it, they are, in fact, online.

And if someone across the room has made themselves unavailable to you, take a hint!

Just sayin

Oh, Brann, I know what you're going through! It's so annoying, and it happens to me everywhere: I walk into a room, and all heads turn as if transfixed by my animal magnetism and sexual charisma.

It's a curse.

This is dumb. What's different about a person's profile whether the online indicator is turned off or not, except for the words "This resident is online"? The only thing you can't do is offer a teleport. You can still send IMs, items, add requests...

What does it really -matter- whether you can see if they're online?

Sheesh, if you gotta pick SOMETHING to complain about....

/me shakes his head.

Do you have 2 Alts on together, so 1 is camping all day and AFK, earning you money, while the other goes around playing? Today i was camping and it was the unresponsive campers that did not show on line, no matter how friendly you where to them you got no response. Is this just people being ignorant or AFK and not even at their PC?

If it's enabled, it will turn up near the top over the born date.

How do you enable it? I've never seen this before either. I always just look at the offer teleport button.

it must be unchecked as a default maybe??i've never seen it on anyones profile before..

either way people have their reasons for showing offline or not..
i could understand certain reasons to get upset over it but not very many of them..
like if money was owed and they are dodging or if you are in business together with someone and they don't show up but you see them offline and are looking right at them..
there are not many reasons people should get upset over someones choice to show if they are on or not..
9 times out of ten there is a good reason and it is their business not ours unless they want it to be our business..
it's a privilege not a right to know where they are..

For online friends who let you see, it should say "Currently online" there.

In the communication tab there is a setting "Make my online status visible only to my friends and groups". That should let anyone see that if it's unchecked, but that one doesn't seem to work very reliably.
