I got wind of this survey, which I havent't seen posted elsewhere: http://tinyurl.com/4pgn8o(It's an SL created survey, not a third party thing) I recognized at least a couple Gendel's Children avvies in there, as well as a couple that look like their parts came out of Tableau. I liked seeing some small stature avvies, some with a little weight, an "avatars of color." I was surprised to not see any anthro futs in the batch, Could this survey be leading to new beginning avatars? What to you tink? Mari

Hopefully! But a refinement of the avatar mesh would be nicer...

took the survey... and some of the avas were nice but i see they still have that hollow, scary cleavage thing going on with the female avatars. that needs to be worked on.
but on the whole, i like the assortment.

Took the survey, too. Strange how there were 4 robots that looked very similar.

I accidently left off the o and it lead me to something about working in the UK. heh. Geez. What choices. Like Extremely? Like very Much? Neutral Dislike very much, Dislike extremely. What if i just like the avatar, but not "very much"? Gah, this wasn't made by someone with a marketing degree. If so then . . blah. Not the way it is supposed to be worded. heh. Either, basically, love the avatar extremely, or very much like the avatar, completely neutral, rather dislike, loath the avatar. I think I answered neutrally for all. I mean geez, I didn't love or hate any of them, though I liked and disliked some of them, but neutral was the closest to "like" or "dislike". The other choices were levels of love or hate. What was with all the clowns? (And I'm not talking about the Montel Williams one).

Yeah, the clowns were odd.
I couldn't tell if they were trying and failing at Goth, or if there's some new Poirot trend that I'm unaware of.

Dunno, but the older woman was done poorly. She needs some serious Botox. The 'average guy and girl next door ones' were just that; average. I liked the addition of the dragon, robots and animals, as well as the business people. Anything's better than Cybergoth Guy and Cybergoth Girl that they have now!

Some of the avatars would had been rated higher by me if they didn't have some ugly features put on them.

The older lady one looked to me, no offense to anyone, sorta Misses Doubtfire-y. The face was, um... jes not that good, I did't feel. A lot of them overall felt kinda bland to me -- but if these are newbie options, that only makes sense. We *want* new folks to feel like taking on better looks! And yes: liking very much and liking extremely well dun leave much room for "well, it's okay, but I'd never use it." I picture those marlequins being the next griefer-newbie-of-choice, right after cybergoth. Mari

YES! It looks a lot like him.maybe a bit more tan and a few more wrinkles, but the hair and nose and such were just him (He's a very unique looking man)

Hawthorne Effect
06-03-2008 14:59
Psyra, I think that survey is seriously plagued by the Hawthorne effect. Judging by what I have seen in the way of shapes for sale (and they must sell. I'm still a newbie so for all I know they don't have to sell a lot.), the idealized female form, skinny hips, wraithlike arms and legs, a nice pronounced waistline, and breasts like tea cups rules along with perfect makeup and doll like faces. No one is going to admit that this is what they prefer. Only teens are supposed to admit they have body image issues.
None of this surprises me. When I used to make a lot of sig-tags for MSNGroups, I'd see a lot of middle aged women using cheesecake images. Why these women felt compelled to "wear a mask" (They could either use photos of themselves or other images entirely so there was no need to use the human form.) was beyond me.
It's scarey to live in a society where the standard of beauty is unattainable for any one over forty even if one keeps a reasonably decent figure.

What is the point of that survey, anyway? If this is for newbie avvies it seems a lot of wasted effort because people will likely change their AV around, anyway. Why so many robot things? Why such weird female shapes? Someone needs to show those folks the butt and lovehandle sliders to get rid of that skeletal look. I did like the cardboard box avvie. I vote for that one

I vote for that one Because our current newbie avies look like the contents of a prison toilet backup. Just sayin' But really, better looking newbie avies draws people in more, makes doing business in SL easier off the bat, and more options means more people feel more comfortable in SL faster.

I had to... I loved the mimes...
but most of the avatars were meh nothing fancy or special. But good quality.
Only a handful really stood out as wow ones.

Shucks. I wish I could've seen them all - at least thumbnails - before I had to start voting. I didn't like the very much/ extremely/neutral, either, so I tried to treat the buttons as a scale from 1-5. Started out with "like very much" then saw some I liked better, then - I was out of anywhere to go from there. I would have liked to rate them in comparison to each other, rather than one at a time.

I liked the mimes or harlequins too. I didn't mind the older avatars but the woman's hair has got to go.
The thing is, even if these were great avatars, if they're to be the new newbie choices we won't like them because they'd be ubiquitous.

From: Brann Georgia What is the point of that survey, anyway? If this is for newbie avvies it seems a lot of wasted effort because people will likely change their AV around, anyway. Sure, but at least they will be able to feel like they fit in a little more once they step off the boat. From: someone Why so many robot things? Why such weird female shapes? Fantasy characters were among of the general types LL asked for when they sought bids. They mentioned robots and dragons as examples so that's exactly what they got There was also a strong emphasis on strictly PG appearances, so maybe the waif look was a bit of overcompensation on the submitters' part? From: someone I did like the cardboard box avvie. I vote for that one That's the only one I gave the highest rating.
