My alt was made for permissions testing and because I could. He's a n00b through and through. One thing unexpected from it, is that my main manages an island, and it was interesting to see different responses from different island residents, some where extremely helpful to the 'n00b' and while none were abusive, some ignored me, I have to help kick 3 residents every 2 months, so that helps a bit in my decision making.

i have an alt for playing. a secret alt that can go anywhere and be liable to no one, (except the alt of my friend, who made one for the same reason). we go play, shop and goof off, and no one knows we're inworld. :D

Some use it for cheating or to get away without being bothered.

Of course. It would be the same in RL. Enough people "cheat" ion RL as it is. Could you imagine what Rl would be like if people could "log off" their "main" and "log in" to an "alt"?

You see this behavior in SL because it is what human nature will do with that kind of option open to it.

To start over. I deleted my old account, this is my alt, lol. I do have another alt, but I never use it - I barely use this one anymore as it is.

well lets see, I'm posting from my non-alt... alt...

I got an account back in 04, to join a RL partner in SL for some fun. the relationships never went anywhere, and because of distasteful memories, and the fact that I'd chosen my last name to match (don't say it)... thus Void Singer was born, (AND PAID FOR), inventory was transferred, and the old account deleted...

Now I'm looking at starting a business, and wondering if I shouldn't just create another, and save myself some grief. Have the alt officially run the business, plaster their name on everything, so I can still enjoy time with my friends, undisturbed by customers.

so how about it, any non alt business owners regret not alting their business leadership?

The last time I checked I had so many alts I don't even know who most of them are. I may be an alt of one of them for all I know.

My husband RARELY logs in (and only then to humor me). He has become my alt.
It's a verry different experience walking around SL as a somewhat burly man instead of a petite female.

I don't have an alt, I do not really at this time see a need for one, if someone is IMing me and I want to be alone, I can always turn off thier ability to see me on the friend's list and if they persist, I will just tell them to bugger off and that I want to be alone. Eventually I may find a use for an alt, but for now, I am fine just being DP.

I only recently created an alt, and you'll probably all think I'm a horrible individual when I tell you my reason, but I'm a boy on a budget.

I set my alt to camp when I go to work or go to bed, and then play my main when work gets slow (obviously I can't play him when I'm sleeping.) I know, I know, this is tantamount to having a bot, but it usually only equates to $L16 in an 8 hour shift.

Originally, the alt was created to test out a security system at my skyhome, but once I knew that worked I had to find a new purpose for him, so *voila!* He's the homeless person who gives me change.

Well Eben I would be the last to call you a horrible person for camping at times you don't use the computer, but I would say you are wasting your money though :-) Did you ever calculate the amount of money you spend by leaving your computer running in order to camp?

Even when on a budget, you should be able to buy a small amount of L$ to play with, which you earn back in no time by saving on your electricity bill.

Then for my alt, I created one to make sure my group survives, and it comes in handy when I want to check permissions after building. Even though its named male, I might once in a while give him a female shape just to test clothing or poses/animations.

Hi, I've been lurking around here for a while and thought I would finally jump in. I have noticed while reading multiple threads, that almost everyone seems to have an alt. I have been in SL ,as Ava Manhattan ;) for about 2 1/2 years now and have only recently gotten curious about it. So, my question is:

If you have an alt/alts why did you create it? Do you use it for business? Storage? For fun?

Just wondering, hope this hasn't been asked a bunch of times before!

~Ava

I use mine for aligning couples animations and checking permissions etc.
And recently I had a conversation with myself hehe

Stick around this madhouse long enough, and you'll probably come up with one or more reasons. Several have been advanced in this, and in other forum threads.
...

- A desire to explore activities that you don't want your main character's friends to know about.

...

- Playing a different gender. (A great big hulking guy named "Annabelle" might draw some raised eyebrows).

...

- A person you can absolutely trust, to form a landowners' group with.

Taking the last point first, Bilbo & Co. being premiums at 140US$ p.a. have a tier-free plot of 1024 with 102 spare and get 26kL$ stipend. Website down at the moment so can't do the conversion but last time I did it seemed like just a few dollars for a year of utter fun.

Well, at 5'11" and 11 stone I'm not exactly hulking but RL and SL fiancee is ok with me being a 5' D-cup redhead .. and she works in mental health!

It still cracks me up when I think of shopping with fiancee BSL (Before SecondLife) how utterly bored and detached I was being dragged round girly shops which were miles from a bar but now peering through the racks and being an utter nuisance as our tastes are soo different ;) .. and the shoes .. oh yes .. the shoes!!!

Seriously though, SL is many, many things. Entertainment and therapy have been discussed, but education and revelation should be in there too.

The first one was for testing permissions and scripts.

I recently made a new one to keep a friend company thru orientation - and I've been having a blast exploring and checking out all the new freebies.

I created an ALT last month and the primary purpose was business related. Of course my small 2 property residential rental business is not doing very well and I may be abandoning the land in the not too distant future (when you can't sell or rent the land what does that say). The little person is at a disadvantage in this world even if they try their best to create a good product. But enough of my whining, I see some of you with a plater of cheese in your hands. LOL

Also, I have a SL musician friend and I totally understand why she would need an ALT. Sometimes people take this SL stuff too serious and my musician friend is often being hounded with IMs and other annoying requests. But to tell the truth, I am not that popular and I usually just log out of SL if/when I am frustrated with other people.

I created two alts recently, just for fun - wanted to go thru the Island again and see what it would be like to be new, knowing then what I know now... Told the guy I was un-officially partnered with - gave him the bug to see the world thru fresh eyes, and now .... - oh well - the vagueries of SL...

ROFL! I wish more men would get a female alt, if only to learn to appreciate RL shopping.

OOOO, OOO.. I have a black one and a white one and a demure one and a slutty one and... and... oooo you are so right. (My RL wife says she understands fully -- but women wouldn't want to do that, They gave up playing with dolls before puberty. I was not even insulted by the implication. It IS the shoes!

But I quietly made an alt that looks exactly like the girl that got away!

If your alt wants to go shopping again, have her IM me and we'll get up a little Ladies Only shopping expedition. You'll find that you'll have even MORE fun (and therefore, spend more money) when you've got friends along. :D

I want in on that! Seriously. Can you handle two gender-bending males, perhaps with another experienced (Ha! aren't they all?) female shopper to lead us around and teach us a thing or two about fashion and special stores and.. . and ... hair?

My beautiful black alt has problem hair.

Is it possible we can all be in world at the same time?

Or is this one of those things that should be left for one on one, like...you know.

One of the ladies pointed out, "...but we have all the good shoes."

I don't know how we could have made it clearer than that.

A man wouldn't have understood that. Men just don't do shoes... well maybe expensive athletic shoes, but that fetish is about their technology, not their shoe-ness. For men, shoes are just something they use to cover their feet and keep them warm; they wear them until they wear out (or maybe even longer), and then get a new pair.

Unless they're gay. Gay men do shoes.

(note: this is really a huge overgeneralization, though as with so many generalizations, there is SOME truth to it.)

I have two alts, one male, one female, one large and one small. I use them to get an idea of size and scale when building. Also they come in handy when testing permissions..'transfer' being the obvious one. I also use one computer for an alt and the other for myself..strange the number of thing that are different when viewed with a different system.

My alts don't say very much..just sort of lurk around in the background.

Here's a question though..can you have an alt and yourself on the same computer..?

Perre..:)

I'm addicted to alts,,,one is just never enough! *druggy slur*

Seriously, all my alts are either for work or for hiding from things to do with work. ;p

I don't really have any involvement with alts. My RL 'agent' has apparently considered having other avatars on the books but I don't concern myself with that as long as they don't tread on my toes.

What I am clear about is that I, Conifer Dada, have a consistent and credible identity. I don't morph into goblins, dwarfs or rugby players or whatever! All I change is my outfits and I sometimes I have my hair loose and sometimes tied back, that's all.

And if you come across me walking around as a shiny green teddy bear, it's only a costume, I'm there sweating away inside, dressed in my undies! I'll even take off the bear head an kick it around if you ask, just to prove it!
