Furries are not a persecuted minority.

The thread on the cathedral is what prompted me to post this, but my thoughts now are the culmination of much I've seen in SL. Before I saw the default squirrel-dog-avatar-looking thing in the SL signup pages, I had never heard of "furries." I've since been told that it is not a phenomenon specific to Second Life, and that "furries" exist elsewhere in other walks of life.

Well, fine, but let's get a firm grip on reality, shall we?

Furries are NOT a persecuted minority. No matter how much you think some unfair amount of scrutiny, discrimination, bias, or other negative societal condition is being foisted on you by your fellow residents or the virtual community at large, the fact is that being a "furry" just means YOU CHOSE TO WEAR A BIPEDAL SQUIRREL-DOG-FOX-SHAPE WHEN YOU SIGNED UP (OR AFTER).

I mean, for crying out loud, if a given place won't let you go there because it's restricted to human avatars, just wear a human shape and then put your fox costume back on when you're done! I own a Dalek avatar, but you don't hear me complaining about discrimination because not every location has wheelchair ramps suited to a blob of protoplasm housed in a combat chassis that moves best on perfectly flat and level floors without seams.

Let's try to keep a sense of perspective, shall we? You are not your avatar, any more than I am a pistol-wielding twenty-something woman with large breasts when I play "Tomb Raider."

dang right furries are persecuted...heck, i am pretty open-minded and liberal and some of them kinda creep me out a bit...but i wouldnt "ban" any group indiscriminately...individually is another story..

Hey now - the biplane always performs as advertised. I make it clear that it crashes about half the time and fails to get off the ground the other half. Anything that happens between a successful takeoff and the inevitable flaming tail-spin of doom is likely to be SL gold. But it might not be.

Oh - and to keep it on topic, are you saying that they are not a minority, not persecuted or both? Are people who ban furries from their land a persecuted minority because there's an outcry like in that thread you're referencing? I guess it's all semantics. You can define "minority", "persecution" and the phrase "persecuted minority" in many different ways.

newbie stupid question alert.

I'm not sure exactly what a neko is. I have a rough idea, but I can't quite put it together in the concept of SL. Can someone either post it here or if that's too off-topic, maybe PM me? "Furry", I have figured out. "Tiny", I'm a little scetchy on, but "Neko" is a mystery. I'm assuming it's more than Lexxi in a Playboy bunny outfit but substituting cat ears and a tail.

@Trout: Neko. Japanese for cat. Hybrid creature with cat ears and tail, and sometimes whiskers and other stuff. Cat girls are a popular topic in Japanese manga/anime, but cat boys also exist.


(I happen to have a pictue of a proto neko I drew in kindergarten way back in the 70s, before anyone knew what a neko was...)

as alyx said, a human-feline hybrid.

i am a male neko. i have a human shape. feline-like skin (snow leopard in my case). feline ears, tail, whiskers and (sometimes) fangs. what i don't have are animal head attachments, paws, etc.

the line between neko and furry is a thin and sujective one. but for me, i draw the line at genitals. once they go "animal", you're a furry.
