Converting $US into L$

Apologies if this has been asked about a million times. I have been through the various links to buy linden dollars. I credited by account with 25 dollars, yet at the top of my screen, the L$ in green has not updated at all. I realise I am probably missing something very obvious, how do I convert the $25 into Lindens?

You need to go to the Lindex and buy $L.

Go to the "Buy Linden Dollars" link on the home page (on the left), or the "Buy L$" link on the left-side menu of your account page.

Thanks for this, I followed instructions and went to buy L$ and put in amount, and it said

We are unable to complete your request.
• This transaction would exceed your monthly billing limit by US$2.19. You have already billed US$25.00 of your monthly billing limit is US$25.00.
• The system encountered an error while processing your order, please try again.

It says I have bought $25 worth of lindens, but they are not showing in the top right hand corner of my screen, I still have a balance of L$185!

Any ideas?

Okay, we need more specific information.

Go to your account page on the SL web site.

Under Linden Dollar summary, check both your Linden Dollar balance and your US Dollar balance. What are they?

On the right-side menu, go to your Account History. This will list your US Dollar billing transactions between you and LL. Do you see where you increased your credit by US$25.00? Does that show on your US Dollar balance. Did anything happen to it after that, or is it still there?

On the right-side menu again, go to your Transactions History. This will list all your L$ transactions inworld. Select an appropriate date range to cover the dates in question and click the view button to see the new list. Does it show any information that helps you figure out what happened?

ETA: At times like now when there are many in-world glitches, the L$ balance shown in the SL client may not be correct, but the one on the web site usually is.

Is this your first purchase? If so, although LL will allow you to put 25USD on your account, you can only convert $10 of it to Lindens until 24 hours have passed. Please check the trading limits here: http://www.secondlife.com/currency/describe-limits.php

Oh, and it may be more than 24 hours....I believe LL only updates limits once per day and, if you sign up after the update, you have to wait an extra day.

I did as said above and this is what my dollar summary says

Rools, you did not buy $25 worth of L. The LindEx has limits on how much you can buy/sell based on how new you are. You would need to contact LL to get an adjustment of your buying power. Try buying a smaller amount. The Buy L calculation tells you how much the estimated cost would be. Try buying only $20.00 of L.

The day 0-1 limit for purchasing USD is $25, BUT the day 0-1 limit for purchasing Lindens is only 10 USD, so he(?) should be able to convert that much right now.

Sorry to be a total pain, I tried buying a small amount, and it said I had exceeded my monthly buying power of $25! Argh!

I am a total noob (oh how did you tell) and so not sure where to go next. Shall I contact them directly?

It's cumulative for the month; if she bought more then she's stuck and has to wait a little while to switch categories. That, or figure out how much she can buy by attempting to buy less and less.

you need to wait 30 days it sounds like. Did you buy a premium account? if so then your going to need to wait 30 days until you can buy more lindens and your purchase limit goes up. The first 30 days your limit is very low and your not allowed to do much. This is part of the risk API i believe.

Depends on when she (sorry!) made her first purchase. If today was day one, it increases on day 2 to $50 in Lindens, on day 14 to $150 in Lindens, and day 30 to $2500 in Lindens. USD totals (for tier and such) are different.

Okay so I have done everything again from the link you posted Ann (thank you). And again is says I am over the limit. I tried for 4USD just to see if it worked

You need to buy LINDEN dollar, not US dollar, honey.

Wait, Rools, did you just pay for a premium account too or just credit the account?

Sadly, if you did pay for the premium account, that counts toward your "buying" trade limit. So any further purchases of Linden or such would put you over the limit.

If you did not purchase anything other than the attempt to buy L, you may want to wait a day or two until trying to purchase L to see if it will allow you to then.

Yeah.. it makes no sense to me either, but that's just how it is.

If you did the premium thing, it'd be roughly 2 USD left to buy...

I did buy LINDEN dollar Novis, clicked on the yellow one and not the blue

Re the premier account, I just this second upgraded it to see if this made a difference. But nope. Will try again in a day or two

I notice your 'join date' is Aug 2007, this means your financial transaction limits are pretty low, I suspect you're trying to buy more L$ than is permissable. It's frustrating but unfortunately you just have to wait a while. Go to 'Trading Limits' in the front page that will tell you when you can buy more Lindens.

I had the exact same problem, and had to call billing support @ 800-294-1067. For whatever reason, they upped my limit to the next level, and it fixed things.

I'm having the same problem.
Can I earn Lindens for camping on hold on the billing support number ?
(I'd have earned at least a couple by now.)

I think I figured it out.
In order to limit abuse, LL limits the total amount of transactions to $25. So if you put $20 in, you can only get $5 worth of L.
But if you use paypal, the minimum you can put in is $25, so you're automatically at your transaction limit as soon as you start. I think if you use a credit card you could put in $12.50, then get $12.50 worth of L.

I imagine there are two LL employees, one who absolutely refuses to allow the transaction limit to be raised, and one who absolutely refuses to allow the paypal minimum to be lowered. Since these two are so busy fighting each other, they don't see what they're doing to the customer experience - we can't buy anything in SL for a month after joining; we get criticized for camping; we don't have any experience to do any jobs. No fun.

In the meantime, you can use things like the Slex or Anshe for Lindens.
