Hanging out with fun people?
04-04-2009 04:16
Hi, Danni. Welcome to SL! Finding a place to meet normal, sane and fun people is one of the toughest things that you will ever do here. If you're willing to compromise, however, there is a place actually called the "Hangout" where a bunch of people who try to spend a little time on these forum pages get together. Not a hot scene so much as a good place to start. Lots of freebies and more advice than you will ever need. Problem is, there are no sane people there! Or normal, but we try to be fun
![]() By the time you read this I hope that one of that crowd will have IM'd you with directions. I can't, since I'm at work this morning. If you want to drop me an IM I will try to contact you later tonight (I'm USA eastern time, GMT -5 I think. I wish I'd had that information when I started here...but fortunately I did get it before I was totally confused ))) Best regards, Jackie_____________________

I second the Forum Cartel Hangout, except that it doesn't meet one of the OP's criteria...many times, no one is there.
But you can almost ALWAYS find some people on line and listening to the Forum Cartel group chat, so it's all good, really. Your best bet overall is to search for Groups that interest you. Some of them, like The Forum Cartel, have an in world place, others just get together on group chat. There are places which are just generally popular, too, where you can almost always find someone. Many of them are themed, so once again, search for places of interest. The Blarney Stone is an Irish pub that's had a crowd whenever I've been. Some of the newcomer type places are also generally populated. Help Island Public, Caledon Oxbridge, GQ Start, the Help People Institute, and The Shelter are all likely spots. Or you could hang out in the (shudder!) Welcome Areas, like Waterhead. (A quick note on why there are so many empty places. 75,000 avatars on line divided by 25,000 regions = 3 people per region, on average.) _____________________

Classic Rock always has people. If you like jazz and dancing, Sweethearts or Frank's always has people. I have never seen any of these places empty. A lot of clubs only have activity during scheduled events (also check events listings in search for fun things to do).

search for "free sex" places.. You DO NOT have to indulge but they're busy places and yes you do meet some fun people who are also only there because they are busy places.

I used to work for that carrot in his ass boss of sweethearts and OMG is he a pain. He says having Inspire Space Park in my profile is advertising for other ppl and thus it is not allowed. First of all, SP is not even a jazz place (not a competitor). It is not a dancing place nor is it profitable... Secondly he started sweethearts with this beautiful idea... but it is all nonsense. LOVE!? My ass. He does not know what is love. He kicks and bans ppl without having to justify his reasons. for once he banned someone coz she was using a translator! What is that? Discrimination!!! Well enough said about that shit hole place. Don't bother going really. |

As Ralektra says, many clubs only have people hanging around when there are events, and they can look pretty empty in between. I would suggest opening the Search -> Events tab and searching on Nightlife & Entertainment. Find some events that look interesting and check them out. There are a lot of spam and unhosted three-hour 'events,' but eventually you'll find some good places. I could recommend a few, but everyone's taste is different. (Also, I have found that the events listings here tend to be a lot more likely to be 'real' and interesting - but they are fewer.)
If you join club groups for places you like, you'll get announcements (sometimes lots!) about their events. You are limited to 25 groups, but you can always leave them again. I don't think I've ever gone to Blackhearts and not found people, and unlike Frank's and Sweethearts, they're set up for singles dancing. (I have to say, though, that there's not always a lot of conversation to be had there.) The Shelter and NCI are good places to find people and conversation. _____________________

Almost always people in Blackhearts, a PG 1980s club. But i wonder if the hosts are bots since all they do is post welcome greetings and Hoooooooooooo.
I can't stand Hooooooooooo, so I quit going. _____________________

Sweethearts and Franks are lagged beyond belief, and most people just seem to stand around not doing much of anything.
When I was a noob I looked up events in search and just showed up at various clubs. Most of the time, you can find fun people to talk to this way. I always have events I'm DJing in my picks, just in case people are looking for stuff to do. Generally, if you're off exploring though, you won't find many populated areas. _____________________

QFT. I've never been able to engage anyone in conversation there. It's a great place if you want to listen to Joan Jett as you talk to yourself. _____________________

Speaking of events, looking up the events page on the website here or in world under search is one way to find at least a few people hanging about.
It's very hard to get people to show up at a designated time in SL, and hard to retain or to get repeat visitors, unless someone is there when they tp in, which usually means paying staff to stand there. Most places are empty most of the time, sadly. (Except infohubs, and you don't wanna hang there.) It's a great place if you want to listen to Joan Jett as you talk to yourself. Ha! exactly. ![]() _____________________

I think there are a lot of good suggestions here.
I know you are looking for inworld spots, but the best way I have found to make friends in SL is through the forums. I don't spend much time here, but I have a met a lot of great people across the street. If you search in Google you should find several options. Regardless of where you go, you probably will find at least a few people you connect with and eventually do things with in SL. The forums are also a good way to find SL events, which should introduce you to more people. |

Joining groups that interest you might be another way to find or attend outings that are populated. In essence you would be going to a specific event, or finding people to go there *with.*
There is even a group in SL set up specifically and solely so that people wanting others to go somewhere with can try to find someone 'on the fly' just by asking if anyone would like to go, in group chat. *coughs* IM me (ETA: IM me in world please, cos my mailbox here is 'bout full) if you'd like to join. lol (NPIRL is a good group - it isn't mine - but it's a good group if you want to find beautiful or unusual things in SL. They send note cards with links.) _____________________

No, Blackhearts isn't a place for conversation. Any conversations I've had there have been mostly in IM. But there are bodies there, and they are not bots. If it's down to going to Sweethearts or Franks and standing by because there's no one to dance with, or going to Blackhearts where I can dance by myself, I'll choose Blackhearts. I can mostly tune out the Hooooos, at least on occasion. (If nothing else, go there to profile surf and find other clubs to try out...) I'll admit I've been spoiled by the DJs (and conversation) at the club where I work, but we're not open all hours so I didn't want to put it out there as a place to go looking for people any time. That and the other club in my picks are about the only clubs I go to regularly. Sredni, I've seen what look like some really good events at your club, but it's a little late for my time frame. I'm glad Clarissa mentioned groups - the Forum Cartel group chat entertains me even when I'm off being antisocial, as do a couple of others. One very friendly group I belong to is the Funky Feats, who do synched group dancing at various clubs in SL. I haven't taken the time to get their schedule down, but every now and again I'm on when one of the officers announces an event... they'd be good for someone new to look up. And also, as far as events - look for trivia and other games. There's a pretty good chance you'll get some live bodies and good conversation at trivia events. Also, there's a loose-knit community of trivia fans out there, and chances are good you'll start seeing familiar faces if you keep attending events. _____________________
