 I finally got back in world (for like an hour lol dam thunderstorms) and I decided to pop over real quick to a party at one of my fave spots.....

So...I come up with a costume idea real quick and I don't have time to run out and shop around for certian pieces so I decide to just do my own quickie undershirt/pants layers. And wtf? lol There seems to be a buggy bug since all I got was an entire skin layer that I could not adjust in any way shape or form. Undershirt covered entire arm & hands......under pants layer covered entire legs and feet.

So, new hiccup??? I never resort to making quickie layers like this, but for my costume idea it would have worked just fine. I also tried to change the fabric texture of an existing modifiable t-shirt I had....and same thing....I got the 100% shirt layer that could not be changed. Has this been going on for a while??

I'm clueless here....like I said lol I haven't tried to edit a piece of clothing in foreverso... :o

Do you have nVidia and the 177.xx drivers? SL has problems with entire clothing layers showing on those drivers.

LOL Beezle....I guess you missed my post about my graphics card crashing and installing a nice shiny new upgraded graphics card. My clothing layers look fine.....there's nothing wrong with the rendering of anything in world. What's wrong, happens when I try to edit existing pieces or create new. Actually..I run SL in ultra now with no problems. But, because it taxes bandwidth I keep it at high.....no big difference in graphics rendering anyway.

The card I have now is the EVGA (nVidia) GeForce 8800 driver
6.14.11.7779

I don't think it's my driver....otherwise all clothing would be tweeked.....it seems more to be a bug, but I'll submit a ticket about it and see what happens. I rarely do any editing with clothes anyway, no big deal.

So, are you using the 177.xx drivers or not? "LOL" isn't much of an answer.

That's the 177.79. Read the JIRA I posted a link to. For now, the fix is to go back to the 175 series drivers.

I see the 1.77 in "6.14.11.7779"

What do the rest of those numbers mean and where is the driver designated that way?

_____1.7779 = 177.79 drivers.

Don't know what the rest of the numbers mean.

In the nVidia control panel (help-system information) it'll show as Forceware 177.79, but in the driver version tab of device manager it's listed the long drawn-out way.

My card is using the 169.21 Forceware, but device manager lists it as 6.14.11.6921.

Um, Milla, you ARE using those borked drivers! ;) You really might want to check that JIRA!

Yes you are.

6.14.11.7779 = 177.79 and the problem is with the 177 series of drivers.

Also, from the JIRA article: "Using the new line of beta drivers from nvidia 177.79 made available recently Some clothing will not function in hardware or software skinning mode in sl correctly."

Sorry, don't know how to make it clearer. "LOL"

I was just playing with my clothes layers just a minute ago. It seems to be working fine for me as far as seeing the layers correctly and adjusting the sliders. I have an ati card if that matters. Have you tried rebaking? Maybe go to an empty water sim.

Oy oops!!! LOL I was looking at the first numbers. Well....it 'only' seems to effect if I try to edit....and I don't edit clothing often at all, if ever. So I may just sit on it for now. The rest of the graphics rendering is just fine, perfect in fact. I can live without editing clothing layers at this point.....but I will indeed check out the JIRA. No worries...I have an answer and that's all I needed. thanks gang :p

Seeing how this specifically applies to a particular set of nVidia drivers, as mentioned previously in the thread, I'd say it'd make a considerable difference.

FWIW I'm pretty sure on a windows machine the first numbers pertain to the directX version. 4.xx is dx9 common on XP machines, 6.xx is dx10 common on Vista. So 6.14.* makes it the 14th revision of their Vista/dx10 piece of the driver. (Linux drivers just start out 169.* or 177.* and have two minor revision numbers)

Yeah thanks Rani LOL Duely noted.

Actually....I was in briefly the other day (only the 2nd time since installing my new G-card) and my avatar textures were really funky. Skin and clothing layers were blurry. They'd render fine for a moment....then go right back to blurry. It was pretty irritating but after 10 minutes or so....they seemed to settle down and everything looked fine.

I'm assuming all of this is related to that driver. I didn't go thru and check all my pants layers....screw it....I'll just deal with it as it happens. LOL

That's normal behavior for avatar mesh textures. First they blur, then they sharpen up, then they blur again and finally reappear sharp. It's SL's "texture baking" that you are seeing.

Yeah..... I know...I've been in SL for nearly 2 years......and honestly, with the nVidia7600 card I rarely had those issues with the texture baking. Occasionally I'd get the blur and the wavering back and forth.....but most of the time textures baked pretty quick for me and remained smooth and defined.

What I experienced the other day was way worse than anything I'd seen previously in SL (for me). There were very obvious problems with the way things were being rendered and baked.....so I'm gonna assume it is those drivers.....because again....I never had textures get that bad in the last.....ohhhh.... 18 months.

Oddly, I think I am using the 177 version drivers...and I'm not seeing the problems others are reporting.

what's the CPU/RAM? It's possible the heavier weight card is chewing up a bit more of your other resources and that could affect the network stack or memory transfer rates. Unfortunately, upgrading often passes the bottleneck somewhere else if it was a reasonably balanced machine to start.

on what card? I have 177 drivers but on my 7100 it's fine. The older cards have been tested to death so there are few surprises. They know what the cards can and can't do. The newest drivers seem to have hiccups only with the newest cards. Mostly 9600/100/200's, but surprisingly the ubiquitous 8800's still have a few snafu's.

For my 8600, I keep ending back up at the 169 drivers because of various problems. The 175 drivers make the card act like it's overheating.

It's the other way around for me for my 8600 :p.

The 169 drivers combined with 1.20 would cause the "Display driver has stopped responding...", the 175 ones have been glitch free.
