OK, the corrupt files thing is more than likely a separate bad thing that happened around the same time. What is saying that files are corrupt? Are you able to start the SL software at all, and is it the SL client or your operating system making the complaint?

Ohhh, Gurl 6 has build and scripts wide open, so odds are that whatever glommed itself onto you was a temporary bit of silliness and will be gone when you log back in. If you accepted any inventory offers, you might have a little more cleaning up to do, but it doesn't sound like that is what happened.

I just got a message saying SL is screwed up, so maybe that has something to do with part of your troubles. You might be having two unrelated problems at once.

Sounds like maybe you got griefed by a so-called "deformer" like the one that got me above.

In normal circumstances, you just relog to solve the problem, making sure to log in to a different place than where your avatar got deformed.

Possibly you had corrupted files in your cache, which you can fix from the login screen by clicking preferences, Network tab, clear cache, then exit from the login screen and start again.

If all the words were saying was n00b you got off fairly lucky. I don't want to repeat the words that were on the screen during my last deformer attack, they are too hateful.

Impossible for any griefing tool to affect the smooth running of your PC. It just cannot be done. This is a coincidence.

If you are uninstalling and re-installing, you need to find the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\"your name"\Application Data\SecondLife and delete the Second Life folder entirely. There are other files there that can become corrupted to the point of preventing logging in, and neither clearing the cache or uninstalling deletes them.

Did you get the avatars name that did this to you?

if not....then make note that up top in one of the drop down menus there is a button for "bumps, pushes hits" or something like that.

It will show you who pushed you or touched you even if they have already taken off.

Its fun to contact the "idiot" who griefs you after they have already left...thinking that they got away. I will usually say hello to them in IM and they'll reply back with "do I know you?" ...followed by me saying "yeah, you just attacked me with 'such and such' " ...

I love the responses.
"no I didn't"
" insert swear here"
"....silence..."

I'll send back a nice laugh and tell them that I am sending an AR to LL right now...."thanks for playing...noob"

While I'm sure this is fun for you; you realise that they don't care right?

yes, I know that they don't care. But I still enjoy making them squirm some when they have been found out.

the ones that are silent obviously know what they are doing, but the ones that respond to me are most likely noobs and have no clue how I know them.

Perhaps them finding out that they can be caught is enough to make them scared enough to stop....but most , as you said, don't care...and will continue.

You've got it all the wrong way round actually. The noobs who respond are the ones who don't care. The organised experienced griefers who remain silent are a different breed; it's not that they don't care - it's more than that. They not only believe that griefing is not wrong - they believe it is actually the right thing to do. They see themselves as freedom fighters. To them, Second Life has the potential to do enormous damage to the fabric of real life society in the future, should it ever take off at mass level. Their aim is to discourage people from taking it too seriously - to bring down a peg or two the pompous asses who use the word "metaverse" without a hint of irony. The see it as their mission to inject some absurdity back into SL (which is a fundamentally absurd concept anyway). They believe that in the long run they are doing everyone a favour, even if we don't seeit now. Sort of like an SL version of Noel Godin. They see a nightmarish future where people don't interract except electronically, and everything human in us has died.

After a year and half in SL, I'm starting to see their point.

Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience Sierra. Try to identify the attacker and AR them. If anything like this ever happens to you again - AR them immediately. I should also notify the land owner of the place where it happened - either by IM or a notecard - so they can ban that avatar and take steps to prevent similar griefing attacks.

Often they will tell you that you are some sort of sicko for being in this stupid 'game' and that you should 'get a life' (despite the fact that they are here too).

Some indication that their intelligence quotient is about the same as their shoe size.

Very high-falutin'.

But all that says is some of their number had enough intelligence to dress it all up with this rationalization. But even they do it because they just enjoy making other people miserable.

And completely wrong. Griefers LOVE virtual worlds. It's where they can play and have fun. Only their concept of "fun" isn't exactly the same as ours.

lindal is completely right

people grief for multiple reasons but it boils down to enjoyment and little repercussions. some people enjoy being a bully, some are just having a bad day and it makes them feel better to make others feel the same, some people enjoy the adrenaline rush of trying to get away with something (i believe this is the most common), some times the griefer is reacting to a perceived insult real, imaginary or accidental, some people do it to trigger a response from you. unfortunately a lot of people like to ridicule those they perceive as being on a lower social step then them selves, and griefing is the form this ridicule takes.

in RL if you grief people you get beat up or arrested. in SL the worst that can happen is getting banned and creating a new account.

To the OP:

i understand people have an emotional connection to their toon but remember the griefing is transitory. it is a frustrating but temporary setback. try not to take it personal the greifer rarely cares one way or the other about you, your AV just happened to be available.

a last thought unless they some how get your RL info then they can't hurt you only frustrate you.

You give them credit for being far more intellegent then most of them are. Read the comments from SL griefers that accompany these videos I stumbled across on YouTube, the videos show some of them testing particle and object spammers in SL.

I agree that these rationalizations for griefing in SL are nonsense. These people are tormentors and would be bullies.
Our culture tolerates pseudo violence much easier than it tolerates pseudo sex although the same rationalizations could be made for the latter.
As to losing our ability to connect with one another in RL, I'm not so sure we're really doing a good job of that if anyone's paying attention.
I find I have wonderful contacts in world that I can discuss issues, ideas, and life with and I value that very much.
The few griefers/bullies I've met have almost no communication abilities at all.

If the IQ (or lack there of) of griefers was ever in question, one only needs to do a quick search on YouTube for PN. Yes, they make videos of thier griefing attacks (and they tell US to get a life ROFL).

I'll classify griefers like this not with swear words, or derogatory terms. Basically, I call them pittiful. It's sad that griefing is the only way they know how to socialise and interact with others. They miss out on the real fun and enjoyment to be had.

To the OP:
There are several items for sale in-world that fix the "deformer" weapon effects. I personally use proTEC buy aubreTEC, but there are many others as well. As relogging fixes too, there's no need to make such a purchase, but I wanted to put out that it is an option.
