Unlimited funds????

First: I would buy the new Cray CX-1, thier first super computer for the mass market.

Price is only $25K......

http://gizmodo.com/5050527/crays-first-windows+based-supercomputer-puts-a-64+core-datacenter-on-your-desk

Second: A large luxury yacht stationed somewhere off of Thailand probably.

Third: High speed Satellite tv/internet/phone service.

Forth: Hire crew and chef for the yacht.

Fifth: Throw huge party where everyone from the forums were invited on said yacht. Everyone could then help me login to SL, give away my $L, delete my account and then help throw the phones, super computer, tv and satellite dish overboard......................

With anything less then the unlimited funds mentioned previously................

I just built my new system 2 months ago. It rocks in SL and all of my engineering applications. There are better cards out there but the 8800 GT works good enough. Total cost of build was $600. All I reused were my two hard drives and my copy of Windows XP. If you know even the basics then to hell with getting an off the shelf model. Go to NewEgg or you local computer store and do it yourself. The added benefit is that you then don't have to spend 4-6 hours cleaning all of the trash programs off the computer.

Why spend money on a puter when you can use it to buy pretty things in-world instead :p.

I've seen SL running on a high-end Dell XPS 730 - a Intel quad-core machine with twin Nvidia GeForce 280 graphics cards. At that point almost all client lag is eliminated. Going more than that seems a bit redundant, as any slowdown is caused by the server at some point.

So if you had unlimited resources, you'd probably get better SL performance by giving the resources to SL for to power up the servers and their base architecture ;)

Does SL take advantage of quad cores yet?

2 Months in the making and my latest machine of pixel domination is almost complete, MUHHHHAAHHAAA!

Seeing my current 2.2Ghz DualCore 4Gb, 8800 360Mb is now about 2.5 years old and developing a few "quirks" and I'm not sure my 5yo 2.6Ghz Single core 1Gb, with a Raedon dinosaur backup PC even runs anymore.
I have brought a $220 Dual graphics card motherboard with a $280 9800 1Gb in it, $300 4Gb DDR3 memory and a $480 Quadcore something is on order to arrive next payday :)
It should do me for the next 2-3 years :)

But I don't have a missus or kids to suck my finances :)

What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?

Personally, I don't believe so. But if you search for "quad", there are a couple of good threads that discuss it.

Here's the thing: the client isn't designed for multiprocessing, it's basically single-threaded. So, it pretty much ends up executing on one core, and will continue to do so until a major overhaul. What that says to me is that more cycles/sec make more of a difference to SL than more cores.

That said, you will probably see much better performance on a dual-core than a single-core, because of all the background activity by virus checkers, windoze, indexers, etc..

What a quad-core can get you is more parallelism in your overall environment. So, if you're using voice, the voice executable could end up running on a separate core (though voice doesn't seem to be a huge load). Or, if you were running 4 instances of SL simultaneously, and all maximized, each would end up running continuously on its own core. You could switch between working in SL and LSL-editor and Photoshop/Maya etc. much less painfully. Or download music at the same time as SL, if your disc is up to it.

Yep, I think Yosef needs to subtract 2 fingers from the 9.

Second Life does a good job of splitting the load on dual processors. You can see it with something along the lines of SIMeter etc. AMD had a problem at first, but Torley had posted a link quite a while ago to the AMD dual core optimizer patch. And I never had to patch again when I changed over to an AMD+ mobo & processor.

How about we add 1 to the 6 and subtract 3 from the 9?
:p

Oh, and if Yosef needs some help in figuring out what to do with those extra fingers........................

Okay when I said "unlimited funds" I had no idea anyone would take it out the the $250,000 mark! LOL

And I never said *I* had unlimited funds. /me laughs out loud at that one

However I do want to build a kick ass computer that can handle anything SL can throw at it and will last me for a few years to come. I think I've gotten some ideas from this thread, but if you can narrow your focus down to the new criteria I'd love to read more ideas!

Thanks much,
FaTeke

Hey you give us a blank check and don't expect us to spend it for you? :p
Seriously thou, I would look at Dell, Gateway, Alien top gaming machines and then see how much it would cost to do it yourself from NewEgg.

You should send some of your "unlimited funds" to me.

And settle on a modest budget for yourself.

Ooops forgot something. No matter what else, go with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. 75 foot range comes in very handy when you have it hooked to your TV.
