If you had unlimited funds and could build the ultimate SL computer what would it be?
I'm about to start building my own computer and I want it to kick SL's ass.
Please share.

OK ... here goes:
For a standard, off the shelf model start with a solid Alienware build Intell Core 2 Extream 3.0 GHz 4 GB very low latency dual channel DDR2 RAM Dual NVIDIA GTX 260 1000 Watt Multi rail Powersupply 2 X 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA 3Gb/s Hard drives - Raid 0 SoundBlaster ExtreamGamer 7.1 Audio Surround Sound Speakers Logitech G15 Keyboard w/ G5 Mouse 2 X 19" LCDs (Samsung through Alienware) 30" Dell Ultra sharp Widescreen (this is the middle monitor, the smaller ones on the sides) This will run around 6,000 US$ But we can do better than this. ========================= HP Integrety Superdome 64 X Dual core Itanium Processors (once every process has it's on CPU core the reast become redundant, so I stopped at 128 total cores.) 3 X NVIDIA GTX 280 (one per monitor) 2 X 19" LCDs 30" Widescreen 4 X 2000 Watt hot swap power supplies 6 X 128 GB SCSI 50,000RPM (drive 0 and 1 Mirrored for the OS, 2-5 Raid 0 .. performance over data integrity)All in a hotswap drive cage Compaq SmartArray controller (because the onboard scsi controller always sucks, no matter what the price) 4 TB ultra low latency RAM Windows Server 2003 OS Price? Well, you said it didn't matter. However it does to HP and you have to call for a quote but expect it to be 250,000 US$ MINIMUM!!!_____________________

Video Card 2 X MSI Radeon HD 4870 X2 OC CrossfireX$1119.98 I'm not about to build a computer, and spending those sort of amounts on one is insane for my needs anyway. I'd MAYBE allow myself $1000 and find either the best off the shelf model for the price, or let the local geek build the best one for that budget._____________________

you can run 1000fps but in the end your stuck with the performance of the client (wich isn`t the best app) and server
also, normal games are custom built and nothing changes in them sl, if you go to several areas and combined they use 1000 1024x1024 textures, your still screwed with deteriorating performance unlimited funds i`d just go to my hardware store and order all new parts and tell them to build it including water cooling as i hate fan noise take the rest of the money and buy a new monitor, flatscreen tv or perhaps a car, sl is expensive enough as it is ![]() |

Alicia has a good point. If you really want to boost performance beyond any old 800$ machine, you really need a Gibit Ethernet on the same switch as the server. That means buying out LL. So add that to the 800$ PC and you can get the best performance for 800$ and a cup of coffee

Video Card 2 X MSI Radeon HD 4870 X2 OC CrossfireX $1119.98 Whatever you do, get a great video card, a high-speed CPU, and 4G RAM. Shadows are coming, and only those with great gear will be able to really use them. (Once shadows arrive, the grid may really look weird for a while. Some skins/builds/trees etc. will have baked or prim shadows, which will (obviously) often be in direct conflict with natural shadows.) . |

LOL. I showed this one to the Resident Geek, and he gave me a Christmas List...
Motherboard - ASUS Rampage Extreme $390 CPU - Intel Core2 Extreme QX9770 Yorkfield 3.2 GHz $1,450 Zalman 9500 or similar CPU cooling $55 RAM - OCZ Gold DDR3 2x1GB pair, 2 sets for 4GB total $214 EVGA 640-P2-N829-AR GeForce 8800 GTS, 640 MB, overclocked, qty 2 $360 Hard Drives - Seagate ST3640323AS 640 GB SATA 3.0 x4 (in two RAID 0 pairs) $360 PS - Seasonic S12 Energy Plus SS-650HT $120 Blu Ray HD burner, Pioneer 4X internal $360 Your choice of OS (the Geek likes Win XP, but says Vista ought to run on this beast with no problems) Keyboard, mouse, monitors, case - user's preference...but I'll put in my oar and say I still love my Dell 2405 24" monitors. And I'm going to ask the Geek if he can find me a wireless headset for a stocking stuffer. Total of priced components, $3,202 from Newegg. _____________________

The EVGA card in Lindal's configuration uses Nvidia technology. If you ask someone who puts together hgh-end desktops to build you a machine with an Nvidia card, you will usually end up with an EVGA. They map one-to-one to Nvidia's graphics card line.
For an overview on the Nvidia/EVGA gaming product line: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html For a comparison chart on the now-no-longer-leading-edge-but-cost-effective 8xxx product line: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html The reason why top-end cards may not deliver proportionately more performance in SL is that many of their enhancements are for DirectX support, and SL does not use DirectX - it's an OpenGL platform. . |

Half a million dollars for a computer, and a video card over a grand. I will just leave it at that. Hey, you did say money was no object.

Video Card 2 X MSI Radeon HD 4870 X2 OC CrossfireX $1119.98 I have this card, it does kick a**!! but even the geek at the store (who plays SL) told me that the performance will not increase enough to justify an additional card. JulieAnne |

High end computer will only get you so far... The network connection from SL's servers are the main bottle neck. All that high end hardware is useless if the information it is trying to process is not getting to it.
If I had unlimited funds SL would not be on my to do list. ![]() |
