I never buy skirts anymore because i'm fed up trying to adjust them to my avatar's wider hips. Everywhere I shop, the skirts are fitted for smaller hipped women. (No, I'm not the most worldy SL avatar..lol)
I don't want to contact merchants to do a custom fitting, I don't want to adjust the damn things myself (that almost always ends up in dissatisfaction).
So the question is, where can I go to get some skirts that will fit me, the slightly wider hipped avatar...

Nor should you If some vendors can provide several sizes for boots and hair (thank you!) then it shouldn't be that hard to offer a few sizes of prim skirts, ESPECIALLY for the no-mod type. It would just take a few tweaks and customers wouldn't have to alter their own things. Not everyone is comfortable with that, ESPECIALLY when dealing with no-copy items.

The problem is that there are no "standard" body sizes when it comes to things other than heads, feet and maybe hands. Someone's idea of "slightly bigger" could be radically different from mine or yours. Considering how many stick-thin avs with no butts are out there, my idea of being "slightly bigger" is probably way above "normal."

BBW is the way to go!
08-05-2008 13:40
First step is do a search in world and on SLX for "BBW".
You'll find a couple of dozen outfits more or less set up to fit larger AVIs. Next, go to the BBW Beach Club and check out the store there, probably behind you as you TP in. Next, check out Belissma. Elle74 makes several outfits in larger sizes and knows what she's doing. Next, check out the mall where "Fen's Finery" is. There is a store near the end on the top level that has a couple of items for larger AVIs. I think you'll find at least a few outfits including skirts that will work better than the standard issue Barbie-ware. Good Luck! ~Jenni~

~Sera~ I have your problem frequently. Mostly, I avoid buying prim skirts. Regular non-prim skirts fit me pretty well. There is a problem with the regular, non-prim skirts, that comes with certain poses. With certain wide rotations of hips or legs, you will have your hips or legs poking through the dress. This is a minor inconvenience. (And one that can be partially solved, aesthetically, if you have glitch pants matching your skirt to wear underneath.) If you find a prim skirt you have to have, buy only ones that allow you to copy and modify. Get a pose stand, make a copy of the prim skirt, and start editing. With patience, you can edit them to fit you. But remember to make that copy first; screw up your only original, you've screwed it up for good. Unfortunately, very few merchants sell prim skirts with copy and modify. A couple of times, I have bought a prim outfit that was no copy and no modify, and screwed up editing the prim, and when I told the merchant, they were nice enough to give me a copy and modify (but no-transfer) copy of the item I screwed up. I wouldn't count on merchants always doing this for you though. Of course, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wearing pants (except for the fact that it's hard to find women's pants that don't have a Britney Spears-esque ultra-low wasit).

~Sera~ I wouldn't consider myself BBW but I am more than a 12 yo old boy with a chest (note:I am curbing my language by Amaranthim's request XO Amar). Enough to where I lose my hands in my hips with my AO. But I have not had a problem with prim skirts at all. I have the occasion problem belts but those are easy to adjust. I do almost all of my shopping at the same two places. IM me IW and we can go shopping together! /me LOVES shopping!

I have a fairly large size bottom and I don't change av's to a amaller one when I make my designs, there are some designers that do. I'm not sure what you are looking for but you can come check out my designs and if they are what you might be interested in let me know. My main store Rufeena is in the sim of Mosquito but I am moving to the sim of Yemple in a few days.

Lots of prim clothing I buy is modify/no trans, but most of the time when i try to adjust individual prims (because the All resize is a mess with skirts, lol, it hardly EVER ends up looking right), I end up messing the whole thing up.. but YES - for the most part I agree that moddable parts is ideal and if they aren't mod, they should be providing various sizes *nodnod* Most business owners I've dealt with in SL are more than happy to assist with anything I need... but sometimes I just want to buy something and not have to fiddle with it! lol. It's not that I don't want to inconvenience anyone or think they won't do it... I guess I'm just an 'instant gratification' type shopper...

They offer their AO stands in different versions (S,M,L I think) for different size avatars to help combat the hand in hip problem. Might be worth a stop on the shopping spree.

My avatar is short and wide with generous hips. I don't mind taking the time to adjust prim clothing, but I've found, in most cases, that system skirts and dress just look better than prim skirts on my figure. Once I started keeping my eyes open for system skirts and dresses, I found lots of great ones.

Interesting, in RL I have to work hard to maintain my figure, I can't imagine wanting bigger hips in SL or in RL.
With total respect, I'm not being rude, but can I ask why do people (women) wish to be bigger in SL, I am just curious?

Knowing Sera, I can address this. She looks like a properly proportioned woman in SL unlike most of the stick-thin Barbies running around the place. That's the appeal.

My av is not large by any means either, but she's well rounded and I have to make alterations lots of times to prim attachments or wear the "medium" option of a multi-size package. Also, I've heard that some men actually prefer a woman with some curves and a little flesh in the right places. Mine does.

To answer Bella...I can't speak for anyone but myself, of course, but for me, the choice to have an avatar who is a short, well-rounded brunette with glasses--as I am on this side of the keyboard--has to do with the way I enjoy SL. I see my avatar not as a distinct personality (as some do) but as an expression of myself. I would like to be able to do a lot of the things I can do in SL, such as fly, swim in the ocean whenever I feel like it, play tourist in cities and museums in a way in which money is no object. If my avatar is a human who looks nothing like me, the feeling of participation I have in SL is lessened. I enjoy myself more in an avatar that looks and feels like me. I suppose that if what I really wanted to do on this side of the keyboard was not fly, etc., but have smaller hips, I'd enjoy working with an avatar that looked skinnier. And there would be nothing whatsoever wrong with wanting that, I just happen not to.

What the heck is a system skirt? I have very generous hips and cannot wear slip dresses or pencil skirts, just no amount of adjusting makes them look good. Tell me what a system skirt is plz... thanks

So sorry--a system skirt is one that covers your avatar with a texture rather than using prims. If an item appears in your inventory with a little icon of a skirt next to it, it is a system skirt. A prim skirt will have one or more little boxes as an icon.

Why would women in SL wish to have bigger breasts, smaller feet, bigger eyes, longer hair, shorter hair, bigger feet, shapelier ass, smaller ass, bigger thighs... I dunno... your question seems pointless and lacking perspective. With all respect, I'm not being rude, that's just how it seems to me. -shrug-
